What else would you suggest to stop the false vocal chords from taking over, Or what would you suggest for someone with muscle tension dysphonia…
    I was a singer…

I would have to know a little more about you to address the muscle tension dysphonia. I hope you are getting help for that. For the false folds, do you notice patterns in your singing or speaking where they like to take over? Is it in moments of stress or belted high notes? First having that awareness is helpful. False folds like to take over when your brain perceives danger. I really like practicing a silent relaxed breath and then sing a line from that relaxed space. Another thing you can do is think a very sad sob when singing a song. Try singing "Happy Birthday," as if you were mourning something. Feel the expansion in your throat. Get to know that feeling and apply it to songs where the constriction tries to take over. If you experience constrictions while speaking, perhaps it is when you are tired or stressed. For me, when my body is too relaxed and I'm slumping, I tend to speak with a little constriction. If I straighten up and engage my back and pec muscles a bit it releases those pesky false folds. Keep working at it. It's worth it!
