I am very proud of you. I am going to pick up running again. I was good in college but that was back in the late 80's. You have inspired me to run the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
I ran my first marathon on a bet. Trained hard for it for a year, ran it and was very proud of it. Then i stopped running. Fast forward 10 years, i now feel the itch again. I am training for a marathon again. This time, not for a bet but to be healthy. I am a runner again and intend on staying one this time. Because this time around, the marathon isnt' the goal anymore. Just a step in my health ladder. So if you ever feel the itch again. Dont' set the race as the end game. Races should be part of a journey to be fit and healthy. I no longer look at my medals. Instead, I am proud when i look in the mirror and see a physically fit body. Greatest motivation in the world for grinding those weekly long run. Good luck with your journey.
Hi! Just found this video and your channel and I can totally relate to you and your story. I was always the slowest runner in school and absolutely hated it and now I am attempting to run a marathon in 6 months time... as a beginner. Well done on this huge achievement!!! Subscribed :)
Just found your channel - i also started from zero running with a strength training base in april, and our paces sound similar. A half is a huge achievement, well done building up the distancd! I've been focused on improving my 5ks and have a 10k next month!
Yo this is blowing my mind lol my wife and I saw a bunch of you folks walking about toward the end of the day and we were wondering what all race this was! This is amazing! Congratulations! Actually looking up videos for the first time to run my very first half marathon, so its a happy coincidence that I found a local one through you! Great video!
Congratulations, thank you for making this video, you tell your story really well and make training seem realistic and achievable, well done being honest about not quite following the plan this is something I feel like people don't share as honestly as you have
So glad I found this video. Just did my first run in years and did almost 5k (with a few walk breaks) but am so proud of myself and am looking forward to this journey to a half marathon in October!
I am also a beginner to running and this was so helpful! I’m running a half marathon this summer, and I’ve been running a bit for the past few months, but not with any sort of training plan. I really like how you designed your plan so I think I’ll do something similar, thank you for the inspiration! And congrats!!
Picked this video because I signed up for a half marathon as a new running. I start watching just to find it it’s for the exact same race a year later lol 😂 So cool
Congratulations and well done! I've done a number of half marathons and still believe miles 7-10 are the hardest, just like you said! Thanks for the video! My next marathon is the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon. I don't feel ready!
This is so encouraging. Suddenly inspired to do a half marathon. Who says that you cant skip ahead? I used to do couch to 5k. When I started, I thought there was no way I'd be able to run even that long because i was done after 60 seconds. (I trained with the BBC Couch to 5k app which was amazing, with the lovely Jo Wiley as my trainer haha) But yeah, its hard to learn how to switch your mind off and focus on your body in a good way, and also yes, you will be sore, yes, usually the first 5 minutes SUCKS and you might have pains. I still remember the first 5k I ran without stopping, I had such a weird twinge in my knee. I was about to give up, but pushed through and ran the best run of my life. I used to run 5k three times a week, but I got covid and stopped because my heart went funky. I've been doing some runs on the treadmill, but it sucks because I cant vary and control my pace very well on it. And its boring. And when it tells me to slow down for a walk for a minute or so, my shins hurt and I dont want to stop at all because I lose my jive. Im holding up well with energy and everything otherwise. Im going to try running outside again! Thanks, loved this video.
I’m a sophomore in highschool, I haven’t ever been on a team ever or did any sports outside of P.E classes and weight room that’s required for P.E. This year I wanted to make it a goal to do track for my mental well being and to be active, and also to have the chance to make friends. I searched this video to see how individuals progress in their running journey so I can look for tips and tricks, and to also prepare myself. My track season starts Tuesday but hopefully I’m able to sign up because tomorrow is the last day. I still don’t have equipment yet such as shoes and proper track wear, but I’m planning on getting some sometime this week. Wish me luck! Hopefully I get in. I know I’m not the faster now, but I’m going to work hard to not only be faster and build endurance but to also have a better mindset such as pushing to my limit and knowing how to take good criticism to improve. I’d admit, I’m not sure how to take criticism because I take this seriously but I also want track to give me the chance to be able to improve from criticism, and turn it into good criticism.
you've got it!! pace is so individualized -- most important thing is putting your mind to it and completing it no matter how speedy or steady that is. good luck! 🤩
Wow! You should continue to be proud!! You go girl! Thank you for the tips. I have always wanted to do an event. I signed up spontaneously a few weeks ago for a couch to 5k. I am nervous. I am doing it for me! I am a slow runner, newbie.
OMG the marathon you were going to in Nashville is the one that took place the same day I took the MCAT in Nashville on the course. It was such an adrenaline rush to come out of my 7 hour exam and see the runners exhausted as well hanging out in Nashville. Had to share lol
The running apps were correct. The 13.1 is the shortest you could make the run and it’s typical to be a mile different if you aren’t paying attention to corners.
So proud of you!! I too am beginning my journey (four days in lmao) but I hated running in high school, and lately I’ve been aiming to run a certain amount of time each day. I am definitely the slowest runner right now but I’ve been enjoying it and I hope to keep my daily streak to a month and then I’ll hope to keep wanting to go. Maybe I’ll start with a 5k one day but also any recommendations on beginning runner shoes? Mine are old and the soles are goners so I’ve been running on old shoes haha (edit; jk I hadn’t finished the video and didn’t realize you covered shoe recs)
thank you!! you've got this. I remember the beginning days vividly lolol the shoes I mentioned in this video are the ones I used to start -- since filming this video I also tried saucondy endorphin speed 3s and really like them as well for beginning running shoes!
Fantastic Fantastic sharing Anna!!and I really really love watching your vlogs so so much you are my inspiration and I wish you have a best week ahead😀💓💫
Congrats I ran my first half in October. Finished 4th out of 60 something . Was really happy with a 1 hrs 46 finish. Got my first full marathon in LA in March. Good job for you it's a beautiful feeling finishing something you train for. Great accomplishment for sure
Congratulations :) About one thing you said, people sprinting and walking, it is a strategy to improve the global pace in a way which is supposed to be less exhausting than running fast all the way long :) It is also supposed to be less traumatizing for joints because of the walking breaks :)
I wear Hokas as an RN on my 12 hour shifts and they’re great. I wear New Balance while running though… I wonder if I can run in the hokas? Maybe I’ll try!
You absolutely can! I have Hoka running shoes and they are wonderful. I think they may have been originally designed for running- don’t quote me on that though, lol.
I’ve been trying a couch to 5K and am doing my first race on Thanksgiving (a 4-mile race). I bought some HOKAs and was hoping they would help my calf issue, however they haven’t helped unfortunately (especially for the price; they also bother me at my instep when I’m standing, especially the left one). I also bought insoles for other shoes that I have already.
I hope your race went well!! Four miles is an incredible achievement 💗💗 Different shoes are good for different people - I hope you find your great ones soon. I haven’t rebought Hokas for running since my first pair. Since filming this video, I got Saucony Endorphin Speed 3s and have loved those, too!
I got HOKAs too and it was such a mistake 🤣😭 my feet have never felt more pain than ever in those and they caused so many blisters. The insta and tiktok hype on them definitely got me sadly
I think this probably was the case -- especially since the half was later in the day than I was used to running so my hydration levels were probably off to start than when I was doing my regular long runs
You're not the first one to talk about the nike run app, have anyone tried the adidas one? I've been using it and I wanted to know if I'm missing too much by not migrating to the nike one
I was shocked how much I grew mentally through training, especially in the sense that I could barely make it through a 20 min run in the beginning without getting so bored. Like I couldn't just zone out and enjoy the run. But by the end of training, I'd be running two hour long runs hardly checking the time at all, just enjoying the music and the outdoors. I didn't weigh myself before and after training but I believe I lost ~some~ weight on the scale mostly due to losing muscle (going from solely strength training to solely cardiovascular work). My clothes didn't fit all too different, but I do think my body became a bit leaner (while eating more), but I didn't measure all too much so don't have a lot of clarity there! My endurance improved SO much (it was nearly nonexistent beforehand) but my overall strength honestly decreased (again due to solely strength training beforehand and stopping when I began running) Hope this helped!
I have finished my 2 week and I needed to take an extra day off I usually jog/walk 5 days a week This week only 4 I’m signing up for my first 5K I feel like sometimes I am getting better and other days I feel like I’m not improving Is this normal? I’m so excited to sign up for my first 5K race I’m already getting nervous and it’s not til Aug 17th 😂😂😂😂
i’m 16 and just started getting into running as I want to do it for my mental and physical health and i’m also strength training for myself and to lose weight and to build muscle as i gained 50lb in 2 months in a mental hospital 😅🥲
Congratulations I’m about to run my first half marathon in decades at 50. I feel great for you.
Congratulation to you, too!! Good luck!
This race was definitely different. Crazy as it seems I am doing it again this year. Hope to see you at some other local races!
I am very proud of you. I am going to pick up running again. I was good in college but that was back in the late 80's. You have inspired me to run the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
woohoo!! you can do it again, you've got this!!
Fellow Michigander!!! U got this fr!! I’m a runner too, starting to condition for xc. (I’m in track rn)
Because this time around, the marathon isnt' the goal anymore. thank you and good luck with your journey too! it's amazing what we'll do on a bet 🤣
This is incredible!! I just signed up for my first half in October and I am DEFINITELY a beginner. This is so motivating!!
congrats to you!!! you've got this :)

ah hello!! welcome!! so funny how parallel our running journeys started. good luck on your 10k, you've got this!!
Thank you SO much for making this video! This is so incredibly informative and helpful as a new runner!
I'm so glad it was helpful!!
That’s so funny!! It was a really cool race with lots of good energy - definitely a good one to participate in. Good luck, you’ve got this!

I'm running my first half in a few months. Doing it on a whim. Thanks got sharing your journey!
Thank you for posting this guide! I’m starting out on it and it’s definitely helping to keep pace and avoid injury 👍

So inspiring! I appreciate your honesty on the next steps :) not every run has to be about running a full marathon!
so true!! i 100% think i would train for and complete another half before going for a full. feels more my style for now 🤣
thanks for posting this!! your advice is super helpful as I’m prepping to run my first half as well! congratulations on finishing the half marathon! ❤
good luck!! you've got this :) and thank you 💗
Picked this video because I signed up for a half marathon as a new running. I start watching just to find it it’s for the exact same race a year later lol 😂 So cool
that's awesome!!! it was a great race. good luck!!
On the topic of stretches- garmin has a yoga and Pilates for runners workouts for your watch that's perfect for stretching out!
i will have to look into these, thank you!!
what a honest Vlog. Thank you for posting. I can relate to what you posted.
i'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I’m a sophomore in highschool, I haven’t ever been on a team ever or did any sports outside of P.E classes and weight room that’s required for P.E. love everything about this vid, great spirit! and the medal looks quite cool 💯
This makes me optimistic for my half marathon. My starting pace is between 18-15 though 😬 but I love how you break the plan into phases
you've got it!! pace is so individualized -- most important thing is putting your mind to it and completing it no matter how speedy or steady that is. good luck! 🤩
this is sooo inspiring and honestly so real. thank you for this.
of course!! you’ve got this
Omg I’m also a social worker and I’ve been wanting to start running thank you for helping motivate me!!

Wow! You should continue to be proud!! You go girl! Thank you for the tips. I have always wanted to do an event. I signed up spontaneously a few weeks ago for a couch to 5k. I am nervous. I am doing it for me! I am a slow runner, newbie.

It’s always great to prove ourselves wrong! lol
Great job 👏🏽

Awesome video it was really helpful !!!!! I have just started and it was so inspiring !!! Godbless you!!!!! Cheers to all your future endeavors!!!
such an insightful video!
Congrats! Did my first half last year and caught the bug.

Congratulations!! I was there too!
Ahh congratulations to you, too!!
GO ANNA WHOOOOO ❤!
Nice video thank you😊
Mega, well done 👌
i’d love to run a half this year but i can’t stop getting injured :(

Matthew 11:28
you're so welcome! glad you enjoyed this video
11 30 is great I wish I could’ve done that. I finished in 3 hours 7 min slow at idk y I can’t get faster
You may have felt sick from dehydration. Even being a little dehydrated can make you nauseous.
Um hi just found you and saw you
Ran a 1/2 and run, instant follow
How did your overall health improve during this journey? Mental, weight loss, strength, etc?
I was shocked how much I grew mentally through training, especially in the sense that I could barely make it through a 20 min run in the beginning without getting so bored. Like I couldn't just zone out and enjoy the run. But by the end of training, I'd be running two hour long runs hardly checking the time at all, just enjoying the music and the outdoors.

Hope this helped!
I have finished my 2 week and I needed to take an extra day off
I usually jog/walk 5 days a week
This week only 4
I’m signing up for my first 5K
I feel like sometimes I am getting better and other days I feel like I’m not improving
Is this normal?
I’m so excited to sign up for my first 5K race
I’m already getting nervous and it’s not til Aug 17th 😂😂😂😂
I think the chews need water for them not to make your tummy hurt. I learned the hard way 😩
I felt so betrayed during the race 🤣😭 I think I’ll try eating them and drinking at the same time in the future
When you began your long runs would you walk them or continue with the intervals? I don’t think I could run the entire thing.
I would run them all but would slow wayyyy down for the whole thing which felt much more attainable
Lol your first run April 27 that's my birthday
I want to be able to do this my goal for 2024
you got it!! you can definitely accomplish this if you put your mind to it :)
Half Marathon is very easy but it may be hard for beginner
i’m 16 and just started getting into running as I want to do it for my mental and physical health and i’m also strength training for myself and to lose weight and to build muscle as i gained 50lb in 2 months in a mental hospital 😅🥲
good luck!! you've got this :) it's incredible how much our bodies can adapt to.
I wish you best of luck! I’m 15 and I’m trying to get into running too.
what a honest Vlog. Thank you for posting. I can relate to what you posted.
Congrats! Did my first half last year and caught the bug.
the bug is so real 🙃
