They said they were polishing totk for a year prior to release, that polish was likely focused on the complex physics and performance which allows at least some part of the staff to begin working on the next title.
Art, gameplay concepts and prototypes , enhancements to the engine, familiarizing themselves with the new hardware, all that stuff could have been underway for a couple of years now. Plus they won't have covid to contend with, or at least not to the same degree. Call me naive but I think the game will be out sooner than we think.

With how impossible of a game totk is on switch, and how much content was reused (they probably saved a year with how much it was) it was more likely to get the game running smoothly on switch.

Spicy Take: I think the next 3D Zelda game will release in either Holiday 2026 or early 2027. The games do not start development as soon as the previous title releases. WWHD and ALBW were testbeds for the visuals and gameplay of BotW, which likely didn't start full active development until after those were at least close to releasing, meaning it's actual dev time was closer to 3.5 years as opposedto 5.5. TotK likely was not meant to release when it did, they likely didn't have the staff available due to moving them to other projects, the botw DLC, Monolith needing to allocate more resources to Xenoblade 2, etc. TotK likely didn't enter full production until early 2018, and the pandemic caused tons of issues, namely slowing development to a crawl for over a year and remote work having less collaboration and communication leading to more time needed to optimize the game and fix bugs causing further delays.
Aonuma even said they could have released the game a year early but decided to spend a year polishing the game and fixing bugs, likely caused by development issues from the transition to and from remote work.
Now, you don't really need all your staff to with on polishing, optimizing and bug fixing, you need mostly programmers and some engineers for that. They likely could've put the next game into development in say 2022 rather than have an army of artists, animators, level/world designers, engineers, etc sit on thier hands. Even the director doesn't need to be fully hands on when it comes to fixing bugs.
A hypothetical Zelda game that started with in the summer or fall of 2022, while the finishing touches were put on TotK, would have nearly 4 and a half years of development time to make a holiday 2026 release, or nearly 5 years for a Spring 2027 release in case it needs a bit more time and they don't want to have it release at a similar time to what I assume the big holiday 2026 game would be, either Pokémon gen 10, animal crossing or a new Smash Bros.
4.5-5 years is more than enough time to make a game like a 3D Zelda, provided there isn't a global catastrophe that causes 18 months or more of delays.

In my opinion, the next Zelda will be announced in 2026, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the series. With an initial release set for 2028 and then postponed to 2029 (as usual). With Echos Of Wisdom and other Zelda-themed games coming out over the next few years (like new remakes and a new Hyrule Warriors), I don't think there's so much rush to announce the new title. TOTK was announced so early because, in my opinion, it had been considered as a smaller and less complex title, a real Majora Mask for BOTW, perhaps with an initial release set with the launch of Nintendo Switch OLED!

ToTK had a lengthy testing phase so by the time Switch 2 releases, it will be almost three years since ToTK went into polishing phase. I'm pretty sure the core design team has been working on a new Zelda concept for quite a long time (a number of years). I predict a new major Zelda will be announced within the first year of the new console's life and will release when it's ready - probably much later.

I think having a Ocarina of Time remake early in switch 2s life would make sense, a remake in the same sense of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remake. But Nintendo usually does their own thing so let's see.
I could also see a remake of Zelda 2 or the Oracle games on the same scale as Links Awakening, and for Zeldas 40th anniversary maybe a WW and TP remaster bundle or if we did not get the Ocarina of Time remake, then a Ocarina of time and majoras mask 3ds remaster bundle

Your predictions all feel spot on!
I think similarly that whereas other games in franchises have more prescribed approaches (a Mario party every 3 years, for example), Zelda tends to get exactly the amount of time that it needs. I definitely agree too that they have plenty to tide them over til the next mainline 3D Zelda game! But a 2026 anniversary tease with a 2027/2028 bigger reveal and a 2029 release date feels certainly possible, as I’m sure it will need all the breathing room it can get!
OOT remake also feels like a healthy shout as a bit of a tech demo for the new hardware.
Not only does 2025 seem unrealistic for a new 3D Zelda reveal because of other games, and not needing to reveal it yet… but it also would just feel too soon after receiving tears of the kingdom, I think. I still have tons to go back and do in TOTK. Hearing about a brand new one already would feel like brunch when I just filled up on breakfast lol
    Great video as ever!

  • @PikaPhantomVG

This is a big part of why I'm surprised Echoes of Wisdom is a Switch release - without a big 3D Zelda coming any time soon, one would think Nintendo would try and bank on a new 2D game in the first year of the Switch successor to help shift units, right? Link's Awakening did quite well (better than the Warriors games and Skyward Sword HD, I believe), and having a 2D Zelda year 1 could've helped raise the profile of 2D Zelda games - possibly even beyond 10 million if the game continued to sell. So I feel like they need to have something else up their sleeve. Maybe they really are working on a full remake of Ocarina of Time (in collaboration with another team, because I doubt there's an EPD team that's been able to work on it)?

An admittedly far out theory that I have is that they're going to announce a Tears of The Kingdom Switch 2 edition. A version of the game that takes full advantage of the hardware, making the graphics mouth wateringly good and eliminating loading screens. But a long side it, they're going to anounce an expansion alongside it. One the size of Shadow of the Erdtree.
This is far out because they themselves said they won't release any expansions and I don't think any game has done anything like this.

Great video! I think the earliest we’ll see a new Zelda is in 2027 due to EoW releasing this year and a heavily rumored Oot remake sounding like the perfect 40th anniversary game in 2026. Also the fact that the next game was probably being developed even before Totk was finished, I think 3-4 years of full on development is enough to make it

Honestly I think the next main line Zelda game is going to come out way sooner than that. Even sooner than 2028 possibly.
Why do I think that ?
Well, the developers making the engine are usually not the same developers doing the game content. The fact that Nintendo decided not to make any DLC for TotK implies that they've already put their developers on creating content for the next game. If that's the case, then that would mean that the engine itself is also mostly done, so the next mainline Zelda game would be way further along in production than we think.

Mario always releases more games per year than Zelda and yet the run-up to the film was actually clear - it was a few months after before the floodgates opened. Zelda is in a different situation in a lot of ways and it depends when it drops and where in the console's life cycle it is. I think Ocarina and a Hyrule Warriors game would be a minimum though. Wind Waker makes sense as Toon Link would appeal to younger players.

The upgrades could range from performance boosts like making the game run smoothly at 1080/1440p 60fps or actually improving the games visuals.

So sorry but 2029 I'm not buying. it would be too detrimental to shifting switch 2 units. and then there's the forthcoming zelda film. 100% they'll want the mainline title ready to go around that launch window. and that film won't be coming out in 2029. the movie is glorified marketing for the game. if they're 3 years in now I'd say we're looking 2026 holiday season...
