  • REN IS A MACHINE!!!
    Hey all!
It's time for some more Ren. And as @MissMeKate suggested, I'll be checking the whole trilogy of "Money Game" from this great dude.
Three different pieces of music under the same concept with lots of variation between one and another. Yet, they all reveal the evolution of the great artist that REN is. Everything gets better when you do it continuously with passion.

Hi Patroden. It is live, but he adjusts the volume for each note individually. Took him hours. He practiced on the busking videos. He explains the process and the software and hardware for it. It is live, just by an obsessive mixer.

Just a note: watch Ren’s interview with the Charismatic Voice, where he explains how he records and edits his voice and instruments during live recordings.. like this one..

I do prefer reaction to full video, but understand not always an option with every artist. That said, I think you have interesting perspective, and I remember your reactions to both Hi Ren and Jenny & Screech a few months back were some of my favorites. Glad you are back on the Ren train!

Just at the end of your introduction saying how you won’t be playing the whole song…Ren encourages reactors to use his content, and will clear copyright strikes so you can monetise them.
I’ve only seen one other person take this approach and …it’s not a “reaction”. It might be an analysis, or a reflection after watching, but it’s not a reaction.
If you’re going to try doing analysis instead of reacting, then that’s your choice to try it and see if there’s an audience for that…but I think you’ll find people enjoy watching reactions because they want to feel that shared experience of someone discovering something for the first time. There are exceptions, where people give incredible expert analysis but…I’m halfway through this video as I write, and I’m not getting more than a very surface level obvious analysis…I’ll give it to the end to see if MG3 inspires you to give more valuable insight…
No…you immediately get it wrong thinking it was studio recorded. You’re not the only one to get this wrong, as Ren’s post audio work is incredible, after years editing busking videos recorded on low quality kit to make it still sound studio worthy.
We know you are wrong on this because there is also a behind the scene video showing the same audio being recorded - /exactly/ (except for one part while loading the gun when Ren shifted the timing of his line slightly).
Ren talks about his technique in an interview with the Charismatic Voice where they get into the nerdy details.
I mean, you did a good job explaining your reasons for thinking it was re-recorded…it was the best bit of the video despite you being fooled by it.
The difference with MG3 is that it’s the first time Ren’s spent more than £1000 on a video. They had much better quality mics with a total budget around £30k for MG3 (don’t quote me on that figure, but it’s around that - different interviews have suggested different figures) making his post production fixing of the sound much much easier.
Anyhow - I gave it a shot, but, this isn’t a reaction, and doesn’t hold up to what I enjoyed about your earlier Ren reactions, so guess I’ll be wishing you well with this experiment and leaving you to it.

i came back to add an additional observation regarding the plosive sounds - I happened to be watching an astonomy / astrophysics channel and they have a single lav mic in a similar place to Ren in MG3 and somehow it picks uk that 'studio mic' sound in a very similar way. Ive only had limited experience myself trying to record with a lav mic and it was a cheap one and sounded awful...but then i didnt do anything special to set it up and back in the 80s I didnt have anything to 'produce' the sound, what got recorded to tape was what i got ;) I'm hoping Ren might do a tutorial vid on his patreon with his sound production methods as it is inspiring a lot of doubt with some studio production experts at least until they hear the explanation of how he meticulously apparently reconstructs the recording editing the track note by note, moment by moment and very manually when the tools cant do it automatically.

Thanks for this - I agree with you. I like either/or analysis but I want them to play the whole vid/song.

Gotta say, you can do your videos however you want. But this video, to me, is more like a review than a reaction.

Yep, Money Game 3 was recorded live. It is hours of work to edit it to sound like this, but that is the case. Ren explained that it was his biggest compliment when a guy like you went into an argument with him that there was no way he did some recordings live. He said that was the moment he understood he was doing things right.
A bit of a pity that you spent 5 minutes about why it was not live and showed 30 seconds of the actual song. You must find a better balance. People come to watch, and rewatch, and rewatch Ren, so you will lose many if you edit out so much.

I watch a lot of reactors who do significant analysis in their videos. That makes it transformative enough for copyright purposes, and the fact that they stop/rewind/comment with each bit as they go means it's not a substitute for the original. However, they don't need to cut out anything from the video they are reacting to. Seeing your as you watch the video and hearing your in the moment thoughts as you go through is very important - as well as your after-video thoughts. So I would encourage you not to edit out the clips of the artist, but to put in your commentary every few bars as you go instead. Particularly with Ren, who is explicitly happy to have reactors listening to his whole works on their streams. For me this heavily edited down version was not as interesting

How can a reaction to this trilogy be just 17 minutes long, but the one for "Illest of our time" is 21?
    Not going to watch.

@patrodenstudio 👆🏼 not the way to gain a following, sir. Also, your "analysis" sucked and the "insight" you provided was horrendously wrong and base level. I won't be returning for any more of your videos

Justin Hawkins also just shows clips basically b/c of youtube's manners to randomly demonetize videos (and cash in themself) and many record labels filing copyright claims that just add extra burden and work to the channel owner.
Justin also chopped the videos in clips for his early Ren reactions until he learned Ren's also different in sharing. But Justin is always fun to watch and entertaining, being a great artist himself.
It also depends on the creators motive for their channel if they're willing to defend their content against claims and support the actually artists or just won't be bothered.
Disclaimer: I didn't watch this video as it's total runtime length didn't add up to the combined length of all three songs "plus" any valuable reaction other than head nodding or more insight that "wow!".
