It's a truly sad day in my Rock n Roll life. "Driving home" on the autobahn, listening to one of my all time favorite albums, "Brother" from the band "Cry Of Love", I found out that their lead vocalist, who sang them to the edge of eternal rock stardom, passed away on the 24th of February 2014. He was one of the most inspiring and talented, yet underestimated singers and songwriters of rock n roll history. I personally had the chance to see them live at the Große Freiheit 36 in HH back in 1994. Just before the concert I was able to record an acoustic version of the album's song "Carnival" which was their single release in Germany. His voice was so frickin' loud I had to put in all the pads available on mic and mixer and still he had to step back 3 meters. Unbelievable voice. So, as you can read below, the guy had to fight his demons-like we all have to-bad relationships, estranged children and so on. Unfortunately, he chose the wrong weapons. He died at the age of 52 from a severe abdominal infection due to excessive use of alcohol. Everybody that ever hoped for a reunion with legendary bandmates Audley Freed, Robert Kearns and Jason Patterson: you must stay disappointed. The magic's gone. And with it one of the greatest Rock n Roll singers of all time. R.I.P Kelly Holland!
I can't believe this album is 20 years old. One of my favorites of the era. Between Southern Harmony by the Crowes and this album, I wore my cd player out.
I miss Kelly and this band. Was friends with all of them and was proud to have been a huge supporter before the album was released. I was lucky to have a promo cassette of the album before it came out and was fortunate to get an acoustic show with the band in little Grand Forks, North Dakota in '93. They were wonderful to deal with and I was able to spend some quality time with them. Great memories.
My good friend Kelly showed me this European spot stop of "Carnival" ... This reminds me to this day of Zeppelin for some reason. The mandolin part probably.. I had the privilege of hanging with Kelly a great deal in my 30's and 40's. He was funny and a musical genius. And his voice was simply magical.. He would break into a song at any moment and no matter whose song it was, he had a way of owning it when he sang it. I miss him most every day still.
So sorry for your loss, I myself, just found out about his passing, last week. And even though I didn't know him personally, I got the chance to meet him, and Audley Freed, after their set, in a club that was once a stopping point for either new bands just kinda getting started, or for the name band acts that once played the arena circuit(Robin Trower, Nazareth, etc) This was back in '94 when they were promoting "Brother".. I had previously purchased the cassette (showing age here!) and I knew all the words to every song on that tape! That's how good I felt, that" Brother" was! I'm a female singer, not professionally, but, I have sang with some local bands from time to time, here in Omaha,(Ne) and the way I sing, that , when I really love the song once I learn the words, I can pretty much mimic the person singing, female, male I just have to really be into it! (So, Kelly, if somehow, you are viewing this!!) I sincerely, hope you know this is the ultimate compliment I can think of, is for someone (fan) wanting to imitate your one of a kind, vocal styling(, paying homage!)Anyway, to make a long story shorter!! When I found out they were coming here, I had to go!! It was on a weeknight, had no one to go with to the show, even had to be at work early in the morning! I thought, who cares, I knew of a co-worker that had a pt bouncer/doorman job at this club, so I felt comfortable going alone, and ultimately, because of this man,(since passed away) that I got to meet, your good friend! The place was sold out for COL I had just barely got a ticket and had no table to sit at, standing room only, well my friend found a extra chair, so I stood on the chair, to be able to see better! and the band shared the venue with another band, that was very good at the time, The Mother Station, unfortunately they for whatever reason, seemed to not quite get the recognition, they deserved either, unbelievable. So, they of course opened up for COL, and I was having the best time, just rockin' out standing on this chair! so here comes COL on stage and I'm directly in line with the stage, except I'm quite a few feet away from them, I 'm singing loudly just getting into it, having a great time, and they were absolutely at their finest! after the set was over, my bouncer friend said something to the effect like "after all the singing to the band that I was doing! did I want to possibly meet them! Oh hell yeah! suddenly I realized wow, I wanted to ask for an autograph, had no pen/paper!! just as we were heading out to another area of the club, over an archway there was a picture of The Mother Station" band no cry of love anywhere! at least that I could see in that split second of making my way to go meet the band! When I was escorted by Kyle, (my bouncer/friend) back to the area, there was Kelly and Audley just kinding standing around, in this holding kind of area. So I with a huge smile told them how fantastic they were, and what a big fan I was, and Kelly said, something about me , like to acknowledge they had all seen this chick dancing/singing, while standing on a bar chair at the back of the room! I probably turned 3 shades of red, and I asked if I could get their autograph, he said sure and then I only had the other bands picture to have cry of love sign and he kinda gave me a strange sideways glance! So I go into explaining the deal of how I had to find something to get their autograph on!! He smiled and signed it and put a smiley face under his signature! You know, I still have it, never got "the mother station's" autographs and it was their pic!! but I thought that was pretty gracious of Kelly to oblige my request even if it wasn't COL's! I had told him as well like hey! I 'm always going to know who you are/were no matter what was on the flipside!! When I found out about his passing, I had to go find the picture, just to look at where he signed it and the smiley face! I only wish he could have lived long enough to find the recognition for his talent and contribution to rock/blues, which he was/is so deserving of. I hope he is somewhere in that next plane of spiritual existence, where there is nothing but love surrounding him. and I hope he knows how much of an impact he left on rock music and people that loved his sound. My deepest sympathy to you Carl, I hope you can derive some comfort in the memories of the friendship you shared, and maybe in just knowing by reading this and comments of others, that Kelly's musical genius has touched many people all over the world, and our thoughts and prayer's are with all who were close to him. -posted by Janice ,
Carl, I hope you are well. I couldn't have said that better myself, Kelly simply didn't know his own strength as a vocalist. (OK, he kinda did). But he did own whatever he sang, for that moment, it was HIS. I miss him every day, too, my friend, I really do. (This was actually MTV Canada, not Europe).
lukemanify Yeah, I have a copy of it on a VHS tape somewhere - I really need to get those out and transfer to DVD but it's still too painful, I just can't do it, you know? Kelly was a good friend of mine and his death was huge, just a hard, hard loss. Maybe soon, but not now. Thanks for reminding me of that, Luke...
Man! Kelly was such a killer singer! Gone WAY too soon. So tragic he couldn’t control his internal demons. When everyone was listening to that grunge crap, Cry Of Love was my go to.
Badass!! Very unrecognized band even though they slayed it!! Sad members are gone.
Incredible. Underrated. Some of the best rock vocals and guitar. Cry of Love is a hidden treasure.
