It's criminal that nobody knows this band. They are local heroes around here. Brother has always been one of my favorite albums. Audley is such a sick player. Thanks for doing this vid!
I knew Audley early in his career in the late 80s.. He is a good friend of mine’s cousin and they had a band called SLEEPER.. Many late nights with them and got to know Audley very well.. He was killing it even then.. He was influenced a lot by Allen Collins from Skynard, Johnny Winter as well as so many others.. Still talk to him from time to time.. Cry of Love is easily one of my favorite bands from the 90s. I still play through a 90s Fender Tone Master because of Audley influencing me... Not only is he one hell of a player, but also one of the finest human beings you could ever meet..
So glad you chose an analysis of Audley Freed and Cry of Love. The Brother album is brilliant, such a shame they could never release more albums. Huge talent.
I just discovered the Brother album. How did I not know about this band? I can't stop listening to it and now figuring it out. Thanks for this episode!
Heard the original and forgot about it for a long time. And found it again 15years ago or something. Kelly was the man. Audley and Kearns were the dynamic duo.
F*ck NO! I saw Cry of Love in 1993 or 1994 and it had to be one of THE best gigs I'd ever seen in my life. They encored with Mini-skirted Minnie, an Otis Redding song. The bass player was immense, hope he didn't end up on welfare.
I saw them play Brother in a small small club on Long Island. AMAZING. That night I fell in love with the sound of single coils. I was a steadfast humbucker guy prior to that night. Audley was just simply amazing killer clean player. The singer had crazy pipes, and they chugged like a locomotive.
Audley Freed is that be of my favorite guitarist. Brother is a classic. Love the whole band. Audleys tone is insane. His style is amazing. Thanks for doing this.
You got it right Brother! Back in 93 I saw their name in a guitar mag. Saw the CD, picked it up, and preceded to blow minds even to this day. It’s odd so many people haven’t heard of the band. Usually it’s musicians who have heard of the band. Their two albums have been a couple of favorites for me since day one. Thanks very much for the upload. I’m matching my versions up to yours just to see how close I was. Man, thanks again, very much!
Thanks so much for this. I remember hearing Cry of Love on classic rock radio in the early 90’s and loving them. Fast forward to around 1998 when I go see the Black Crowes and see some dude with a curly Afro that crushed on lead guitar for them then discovering it was Audley from that cool band Cry of Love. I’ve since devoured everything of his I can find. Such a monster player.
Uncanny! Was just talking about Audley Freed yesterday, comparing the early parallels of Freed/Cry of Love and Jesse Davey/The Hoax. Yet another great video, sir.
Incredible album! I listen to it regularly. Have tried to learn these songs. They're part of my albums I try to jam along with, just being an at home player Thanks for the tips! Great channel
Thanks Dave. A buddy of mine turned me on to these guys when the Brother album came out. I was instantly a fan. Loved the Hendrix vibe. Appreciate your videos, they help a lot.
I live in Raleigh and worked at a bar years ago managed by a guy who was good friends with Kelly. Heard a lot of cool stories about them. Glad you made video about them. Maybe you can do a video about Brother Cane or Screamin Cheetah Wheelies sometime
You'll thank me (and Dave) if you don't cut corners and only listen to a song or two from Brother... get the whole thing.... it is a beginning-to-end listen. In my opinion one of the last great Albums.... note the timing change mid-way through Too Cold in the Winter. That album is a long drive record for sure... so glad you covered this!
This is great! I stumbled onto these guys when I downloaded Peace Pipe live but it was mislabeled as Gov't Mule back in the day. Did some research on the song, found Brother, downloaded D&D immediately after! Staples on my playlists from then on🤘
Thank you So Much for this one Dave! Brother is one of my favorite albums of all time! As a matter of fact, it's one of the best albums ever period. I wore my cassette tape out listening to this. I never checked out their other album Diamond and Debris though. I wished they would've put more albums consistently, instead of waiting so long for their sophomore album. People like me just kinda forgot about them. I love that 70s throwback retro sound. Please do a Audley Freed licks version from this album!
This is why i love your channel, never heard of this dude or band, but right after your 3 for all lesson i checked out the album, and then you put up a chord play for the band. That is very cool of you to do that. That 3rd song of the album is my favorite. This blues rock style is one of my favorite styles. Please a 3 for all joe perry and brad whitford soloing secrets. Anyways thanks again for the kicking out some knowledge always helpful
ONE of the BEST DAMNED DEBUT ALBUMS EVER FOR REAL....every song was SMOKIN....I knew Robert Kearns personally (the bass player) as I grew up in his neighborhood and used to watch him play and practice in bands in his home basement during our high school years....TALENT THROUGH-OUT IN THIS BAND...especially AUDREY....wowwww.....awesome....do MORE MORE MORE OF THESE please !!!!! ROCK ON ALL....ROCK ON.... HIGHWAY JONES SMOKES Man.....AS DO ALL THE TUNES ON THE BROTHER ALBUM...I could not believe it when I first heard it !!!! WOOOWWWWW IS ALL....LMAO.....Peace ALL...
Good Lord i love this channel!! great attitude and the info is so str8 to the point and easy to understand. Best guitar lessons on you tube taught by a master of all styles with all positivity no attitude.
Wow! A blast from the past! Always loved that album. Could never play Audley’s lines properly myself. Particularly love the solo in Peace Pipe. Looking forward to digging into this episode 😎
I’ve never heard of these guys and I always wondered where Audley Freed came from. He was in the Black Crowes tours for awhile and i first saw him with the Jimmy Page live album with the black crowes which is awesome. Still can’t believe they knocked back making an album with Jimmy. Nice vid Dave
If you look hard enough, there are some songs that Cry of Love didn't release on any of their albums floating around on UA-cam. Some with Kelly singing, some with the other singer for D&D. A lot of them are just Kelly and Audley playing acoustic somewhere for a record store or something when they were releasing an album. Occasionally I'll look for one, and the problem is that some of them you can't find once they're gone. Idk if copyrights have them removed or what, but it'll be songs by them you've never heard before. Pretty cool stuff. Thanks for these lessons on CoL, Dave! I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers just how good these guys were. 🤘
I’m from Raleigh and took lessons from Audley at Harry’s Guitar shop… As I got older and started playing the ‘frat circuit’ in my late teens, I got to play with a lot of the bands (Raleigh: PKM (Rip Mike) Cry of Love, Dag, The Veldt, Jam Pain, etc) during that ridiculously special time in Raleigh when Custer came in with that Atlantic deal… I actually bought a Plexi of his (through Fat Sound in Cary)… like an idiot I sold it in my early 20’s. I learned every note of this album multiple times. I sold out long ago, but went to see Audrey play with the Black Crowes many times and even got to see him with Page on that Zep tour they did. Anyway, thanks for highlighting this album and Audley man. He’s such a beast and that was one of the best guitar tones ever on that album… Saving Grace? i mean come on man.
Hi Dave, This kind'a reminded me of Doyle Bramhall III, or like the Arc Angels both out of Texas....You might like 'em!....Oh, and I forgot Jake E Lee's Badlands...They had some funky stuff too!
Thanks for this video, glad to see Audley getting recognition. I'm a Cry of Love fan from back in the 90's. He is probably the greatest and most criminally unknown guitar player of the last 4 decades. Starting to finally get the recognition that he deserves. One of my greatest wishes is for a new Cry of Love Album and tour (Robert Mason, obviously). Both Albums with both singers are amazing. Some of the best blues/rock guitar playing in history. He has such a unique sound and feel. Nobody else really sounds like Audley. I definitely hear his influences, but he his approach to so many things is unique. Thank Dave, for all of your amazing content. You should do a trufire blues/rock course. Would love to own it.
I'd say that "Brother" is one of the most underrated guitar albums of all time. But it's not know enough by the masses to be underrated. It's just simply the best guitar/rock album of the 90's that most people haven't heard.
Very cool. I haven’t heard these guys in years. Time to listen again. A suggestion Dave…..would you consider doing some Candlebox? Especially the song Rain. The playing on that tune is fire!
I was thinking I was the only one heard of them love them, was hoping you’d hit the like in to cold in the winter lol you know the one. Thanks for this ☝️
The singer on the 2nd album is Robert Mason, who also sang on Lynch Mob's 2nd album and currently sings for Warrant. Speaking of Warrant, I'd love to see you do a "3 licks" and "the chords of" videos for them!
That's crazy you're doing this! I'm friends with these guys, was friends. Still close with Jason and Audley lives in Nashville and works on Paul Stanley's guitar sometimes. I think he plays with Peter Frampton and Cheryl Crow when he's not in the Black crowes. Great guitar stuff.
Great band. RIP Kelly. All four musicians are super talented. So is the producer John Custer. He put together and produced another group back then you might like. A funk band called DAG. Check out their album Righteous.
No Peace Pipe my favorite song from Cry of Love killer riffs from the whole band but the one s you got are bad ass the video is 3/4 done so many you got it covered lol
You've got it! Heard Carnival late one night over the radio live from the trubador. I'm glad I didn't miss out on them. While the albums are different I dig em both. Audley went on to play with black crowes, Frampton, and dixie chicks among others. I think bassist is in the latest version of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
It's criminal that nobody knows this band. They are local heroes around here. Brother has always been one of my favorite albums. Audley is such a sick player. Thanks for doing this vid!
Whatcha' talkin' 'bout, nobody knows this band? Lol
@@lesliehollands2689 I teach people about them daily
Diamonds and Debris is a masterpiece.
Great album but it does take a back seat to Brother
I knew Audley early in his career in the late 80s.. He is a good friend of mine’s cousin and they had a band called SLEEPER.. Many late nights with them and got to know Audley very well.. He was killing it even then.. He was influenced a lot by Allen Collins from Skynard, Johnny Winter as well as so many others.. Still talk to him from time to time.. I just discovered the Brother album. How did I not know about this band? I can't stop listening to it and now figuring it out. Thanks for this episode!
I thought I was the only one that was into this band from the past! LOL! Thanks Mr Brewster...
Me two!!
Me three !!
I have melted a few CDs of both albums.
Dude YES! CoL is one of my favorite bands ever! Audley is god! I’m from NC real close to Raleigh
I saw them play Brother in a small small club on Long Island. AMAZING. That night I fell in love with the sound of single coils. I was a steadfast humbucker guy prior to that night. Audley was just simply amazing killer clean player. The singer had crazy pipes, and they chugged like a locomotive.
Thank you, Thank you! I thought I was the only one who dug these albums. Audley is definitely one of my greatest influences.
Cry of Love always in the rotation, RIP Kelly, you never disappoint mR. Late Night, 🎵 r0ck0n 🎵
'Peace Pipe' has one of the best solos ever written. Audley is one of my favorite players.
Can't believe I missed out on this band! Sounds like my kind of blues-tinged riffage. Thanks for the introduction!
Right on David...I wore this CD out for years...It's just so good...
Audley Freed is that be of my favorite guitarist. Brother is a classic. Love the whole band. Audleys tone is insane. His style is amazing. Thanks for doing this.
What a bad ass groove. I gotta put these songs on my playlist. I can already play Peace pipe. Thanks David.
One of my all time favorites! Everyone in the band was fantastic!!
Oh Brother! Fantastic album. You sure can pick ‘em. :)
Thank you for video David, I love your channel..!!!
You got it right Brother! Back in 93 I saw their name in a guitar mag. Saw the CD, picked it up, and preceded to blow minds even to this day. It’s odd so many people haven’t heard of the band. I saw them in a tiny club and was speechless. What a band!!
Brilliant breakdown of some of those Brother tracks, awesome stuff !!! Thanks
Loved Cry of Love when the first album came out. Killer stuff and a big influence on me at the time. Thanks for the great lesson.
Great band. Saw many times in NC. Love both CDs to this day. Audley is a special player.
Incredible album!
I listen to it regularly. Have tried to learn these songs. They're part of my albums I try to jam along with, just being an at home player
Thanks for the tips!
Kelly got me into the Cheetah Wheelies music. Great band.
Saving grace is by far my favorite song from them! Been listening to them since the beginning....
Coming from NC, this band was bad ass with one of the best guitar players around. Thanks for making this video!
That first rhythm and licks… Hendrix + Robin Trower.
yes... very heavy Trower influence for sure!
One of my absolute favorite bands, I was lucky enough to find Brother on vinyl.
What?!!!
Great lesson. Love these albums. Wish they would have more music.
Thank you for this! Love the band
……finally some great Cry Of Love stuff!!!
Thanks for that! One of my fav band and Audley’s playing is peculiar and killer!
I found out about this band very very late! They are amazing! Fantastic playing, singing band!! Thanks for putting this great lesson together!!!
Awesome! Thank you for putting this together!

Killer stuff that I never heard of. Thanks for turning me on to it, Dave!
so stoked to get to work on these!! Crazy to see these tunes I grew up loving be played & taught like this!! Thanks so much for posting this, dude🤘🏼
This is great! I stumbled onto these guys when I downloaded Peace Pipe live but it was mislabeled as Gov't Mule back in the day. Did some research on the song, found Brother, downloaded D&D immediately after! Staples on my playlists from then on🤘
I bought this cassette out in LA in the 90s. What a great album and Kelly was a fantastic singer. RIP.
You are not the only one bud. These guys are my absolute favorite rock band of all time. RIP Kelly 😞 You are missed

Personally I like Diamond’s and Debris even better
Free + Hendrix = cry of love

Love this riff. Shame the band didn't go on to do more (I've only discovered them in the last couple of years).
Oh my god, thanks thanks a lot, i feel like a crazy bird when i listen Cry of love. ❤❤❤

Highway Jones- great funky biker song
Love it when you do Double shots!!!!...Thanks David
Amazed this band weren't huge. Audley won't even play a strat anymore. He was influenced by Moses Mo of Mother's Finest also.
Now there's a BLAST from the past......Mother's Finest indeed!
I was just listening to Subluxation last night - MF
Cool Licks! Hadn’t heard of them but will check them out
Thank You, Audley always has been great, there's two live bootleg cds around too. Killer vibrato and control.
Good Lord i love this channel!! great attitude and the info is so str8 to the point and easy to understand. Best guitar lessons on you tube taught by a master of all styles with all positivity no attitude.
Once again , David delivers 👍
Wow! A blast from the past! Always loved that album. Could never play Audley’s lines properly myself. Particularly love the solo in Peace Pipe. Looking forward to digging into this episode 😎

Gosh, this was a such a great band...... wow, I am floored, thanks.
A Govt Mule set list suggestion cued up ‘Pretty as You Please’……I was hooked

For me, he's more in the vibe of Robin Trower tone wise. 👌🏼👏🏼👍🏼
Day of the eagle.
agree... though when this album came out I wasnt really aware of Trower and thought only of Hendrix.
Audley Freed rules so hard
Thanks for this great lesson David. I vote for an Allison Robertson lesson to let everyone know how great she was.
I'd say that "Brother" is one of the most underrated guitar albums of all time. But it's not know enough by the masses to be underrated. It's just simply the best guitar/rock album of the 90's that most people haven't heard.
Too cold in the winter is an awsome song, that riff…so cool 😎
I love Audley Freed and these 2 albums
Wow, I hard this in the day and bought the CD, still have it. Keep them coming David, excellent as always!
I had it on cassette tape!
Thank you! I was just showing a student the “Peace Pipe” solo… so good. So slippery!

Feeling that highway jones... its good stuff thanks for spreading the word. The singer is pretty spectacular also.

Damn, nice guitar playing! Funky as a son of a gun. Smile!
Great work man 👌🏻👏🏻
Sir, your tone is sweet thick syrup!
cry of love and blackberry smoke........killer stuff !
Cry of Love was a fantastic band. They just came out at the wrong time (during grunge). I wish Audley still played like this...
Great vídeo, great riffs, I’m a huge fan! Abraços do Brasil! ✌️
