Here's what the numbers say about percentage gains in after-tax income from 2003 to 2005:
    Bottom quintile: 2%
    Next quintile: 2.4%
    Middle quintile: 3.9%
    Fourth quintile: 3.7%
    Top quintile: 16%
    Top 10%: 20.9%
    Top 5%: 27.7%
    Top 1%: 43.5%

I'm a liberal, but I like George Will. He's so intelligent, and I agree with about everything he said, except when he implied that the US economic prosperity has lifted all boats equally. It's true that we are often too whiney (myself definitely included). But by that same token, that doesn't mean that every who complains has no legitimate gripe -- many do, such as the underclass who get poor schools generationally, those who through no fault of their own born into poverty which perpetuates.

The book The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes challenges the traditional view that FDR "saved" the American economy in the 1930's. You can agree or disagree, but she makes a great case that he was not a good manager of the U.S. economy, though he was a great wartime president.

Of course those of us in the top income levels should pay a greater share. This country has served us quite well and provided a life not possible anywhere else. Why do we need to take a larger slice of the pie than ever before?
In the 50s and 60s, the middle class was strong, America was still the world's "shining beacon of Freedom", and income over $400k was taxed at 91%.
Today, when it costs over $50 mil to win a Senate seat, voters ain't the constituents, it's socialism for the rich.

Deb- Why the pressing need to reduce taxes for our top 1% when our deficits are massive, our infrastructure crumbles, and our industrial might evaporates? Is it fair that our grandkids must pay for our war?
We should return to 1980s rates. And short-term capital gains should be taxed like payroll. Now, an oil speculator pays 15% and a fireman 30%.
I'll concede that taxes play a small role in our upward income redistribution spiral. Our "elected by K-Street" govt is the #1 problem.

I want politicians like George Will. He is so intelligent. People like Hannity, Beck, and many progressives are so annoying. They have a few talking points that they recite over and over. George Will thinks. You can tell he thinks and reads by hearing him talk. Beck and Hannity say they read 3-5 books every week. I seriously doubt that.

I respect George Will's opinion, but I think the American people are far more moderate than he gives them credit for. Despite his rosy view of the Bush economy, there is real pain felt by the many left behind in debt and record prices. And despite his assumed anti-trade overreaction, the american people know the value of free trade but also believe in moderation. Doom-and-gloom conservatives who preach the end will come every-time a democrat holds office should give moderation a chance.

I can answer George's question. I lived in China for three years. Indeed, I saw Miltonian free market capitalism at its best. But the gov't retained power. I agree we should double down on the tactic. But the rich Chinese (and I knew some of them) are leaving the country.

Hmm, smear the messenger, you must be republican. The WSJ also reported on this IRS data under the headline "Income-Inequality Gap Widens":
"The wealthiest 1% of Americans earned 21.2% of all income in 2005, according to new data from the Internal Revenue Service. That is up sharply from 19% in 2004... academic research suggests the rich last had this high a share of total income in the 1920s."
Meanwhile, "The median tax filer's income... fell 2% between 2000 and 2005".

Of course we have "income inequality" and the gap has grown. It's likely to keep growing. In a capitalist, free enterprise system such as ours that's the tendenacy. This ain't the USSR.
Meanwhile the richest 1% pay 39% of all income taxes, the top 5% pay 50% and the top 10% pay 70% of all income taxes. Lemme guess - you're one of those "soak the rich" types who wants to 'equalise'.

Why do Republicans refuse to acknowledge the seriousness of poverty in America. Things are pretty desperate out there. Child poverty rose significantly in the Bush years. George Will is out of touch.

  • @Zyworski
    @Zyworski 13 років тому

@RavingDissension Quite succinctly George Will is out of touch with the common working American. Growth is significantly better under President Obama, but at what cost? A healthy economy revolves around money shifting back and forth between the entrepreneur class and labor, but the Bush tax cuts have removed any incentive to re-capitalize businesses. Why grow a business when there is an oligarchy of corporations and no competition? The stimulus should have been financed with taxes not borrowing.
