I've always loved Stephen's smile. My love for his smile increased after reading The Black Hole War. Stephen's smile was mentioned a lot in that book. Plus, I'm glad he's still able to smile, with all he's been through, and all he knows
cupof acid Yes I know that, I was making a silly joke about the poor man, who although paralysed has one of the greatest brains in the world. Look up joke and embrace the concept, it might make your life less miserable.
@QuibbyFailed I find him incredibly inspiring. I've seen in interviews him talking about getting sad and depressed about his condition and the reality of it but he somehow finds strength and keeps going. I feel like if he can push on and achieve such amazing things then most of us have a lot to step up to.
Stephen Hawking will never die no matter how bad his ALS gets. For starters as to why that's the case, he is a cyborg and cyborgs are immortal and will outlive humanity unconditionally. Second of all, he is a legend of science and astronomy and legends like cyborgs are immortal and will outlive humans any old day. Since Professor Hawking here is an Englishman, it's obvious that he spoke with a British accent back when he could talk on his own. Since Stephen Hawking is the smartest man in the world after Albert Einstein, I'm surprised why he still delves deep into astronomy and theories of the universe when he could be using his possible IQ of 300 to figure out a cure for the ALS disease that left him crippled, in a wheelchair, and unable to communicate without the aid of a computer text-to-speech software. I imagine that if the cure for ALS existed outside of science fiction, the process of activating it would involve the implantation of an artificial electric signaling wire skeleton to attach to the central nervous system in the brain allowing it to regain control of the body's outer extremities, including the ability to speak since the jaws won't be locked shut anymore.
My astronomy professor said that most people are not nearly intelligent enough to understand or comphrehend/grasp the brilliance of Dr. Hawking's shared knowledge about the time, the universe, etc. and my physics professor who is very smart is a great long-time admirer of Sir Stephen's genius work also.
@EGarrett01 You must not understand the concepts involving management of resources. Once you blow your window of opportunity (by wasting all your resources TOO early), that's it. There is no way to colonize ANYTHING right now or in the near future. We must learn to get along first and stabilize this planet. 100 in, 100 out. stable. People having 18 kids would be FINED, not applauded. etc. I'm for exploring. Just not wasting.
@born2own your opinion is valued, there is one thing about your comment, it shows that ppl in the past and in the present ppl look for answers and never found them. but thats where the problem occurs, they lose faith they lose sense of things and the question comes to mind that what if. now if god doesnt exist and god is mentioned as a being of love, how is it that we are all evil? with out light, theres no darkness, without heat theres no cold, so that means the devil exists, therefore god does
@JaredsiVlog He's ok now. He just passed away yesterday, so I know he is at peace now and doesn't have to live with that horrible disease anymore. He died in my arms, and he was with his family till the end. RIP DADDY I LOVE YOU! 12/23/61-8/13/10
Steven's condition is nothing but a blessing to him he is spending each day that he has left on earth and dedicating it for spreading knowledge to us. Thats why our education is so important. He said if we are the smartest beings in the universe we need to keep the human race alive as best as we can.
Thanks for your correction. :) I thought it must be hard sometimes where he has to use whatever movements he has left, but I guess with so many years of this, he has gotten used to it.
@blastkist The technology he uses to speak is basically taken from automatic answering machines used in the 70's and 80's. When he was offered a much better system, he refused saying that the world had grown accustomed to his "voice" and he didn't want to change it. That's the way he has sounded for decades, he's made it his own, it is what makes him unique. Whenever you hear that voice, you know it's Hawking right off the bat.
I wonder how long it took to film this interview? The questions had to be given to Hawking well in advance, so he could write out the answers, it is such a painstaking process for him to write letter by letter with his eye/computer interface. I love that he continues to be an active person, writing and challenging the world with his ideas.
To the people who have disliked this video, you have at most disrespect for the intelligence, power and will of the human brain. I have great respect for Stephen. He has done more for science and our race than 99 percent of the world. People need to realise how much power this man has. He has inspired me to open my eyes and to always search for answers instead of avoiding them. I respect Professor Stephen Hawking more than anyone else in the world.
He is the greatest mind in the world. Anyone here saying anything bad about him can't even begin too comprehend what goes through his mind. He's not trying too make up crap about science fiction, he purely cares about continuing an existence for species that have taken so long too develop into something that is self aware of everything around them. The human race has amazing potential if people stop being so close minded worrying about a stock market and worrying more on space exploration.
@StuckeyMurdog he has a computer from which he chooses a series of words from on a screen and he can either select a word from eye or head movement or in an earlier version by pressing a button. Then after he selects the words he can send the words to a speech synthesizer. He manages to speak about 15 words a minute through this medium, and he enjoys it because it actually gives him intonation with his speech. His only problem he says though is it gives him an American accent XD.
even though i dont believe everything that he says when it comes to creation, i do believe that it makes sense. i have major respect for him. hes struggled most of his life and can still have an AMAZING sense of humor.
@drinndrann it is a voice synthesizer that uses a predictive text entry system, which requires only the first few characters in order to auto-complete the word, but as he is only able to use his cheek for data entry, not a mind reading machine...
this man is an inspiration, he has a passion for knowledge that helps the human race as a species and hes paralyzed, this little kids that are " depressed " should get over it, Stephen shows us how to use your brain...
@masterswag333 When interviewing, questions must be asked beforehand, as it takes Stephan to spell 2 - 3 words in about 5 minutes. He uses his right cheek to control the curser on the computer he uses, because that the only thing that is not paralysed.
@eBiology Yeah by "Why do you think we are sending people to Mars?" I meant in the near future. It does look like we are doing it right now but it's this kind of sentece: Tomorrow I am going to the mall. I just missed the "tomorrow" part. Sorry!
well as a christian...i show great respect to that man although i deny about what he said about the universe created out of nothing, its obvious many scientist made that theory before him but still hes a great man, let him spend hes last few yrs with his loving family.
@RoyalDRM89 He's a Mensa member, one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Society in 1974, was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982, and became a Companion of Honour in 1989. What the hell could a person like you do?
No, there's just more education than academic education by going to college. For example, I want to be a police officer in the Seattle PD and I could either go to college and get a degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology, or I could go into the military and pick a job like Security Forces, Military Police and such. College can teach me but so much. Military is a more hands-on experience that would be more beneficial. Same with other physical jobs like construction, mechanics, and all.
That's one of the sad things of the current public school system. We're all designed to be well rounded in math, science, social studies and English. We don't take into consideration that if we focus on a field or two, or somebody needs an education that doesn't involve that much in the 4 fields that they'll be wasting their time. Majority of adults never use the information they gathered from school, since it's not practical. Just like if we all learned science, it wouldn't be practical.
@joshman144 i watched a vid just now and they said he has control over only his rite cheek, every time he moves his cheek it makes the curser on his cmputer scroll over letters and he simply types it that way. He types 1 to 2 words per minute so they ask him the questins before interveiwing him. pretty complicated huh!
You commented on how everybody else has accomplished nothing purely because of Hawking's scientific accomplishments, yet science is the only thing important in the world. All aspects of the world are just as important and are necessary to have a fulfilling society. If the percentage went up markedly we'd have an uneven amount of balance in the world. What the world needs more right now is programmers, better politicians and more computer engineers since that's the direction society is going to.
@n00buler89 no he doesnt he is almost fully paralyzed, he controls the voice from his cheak, he used to use his hand movements to select it, but he doesnt use that anymore
@TeetoPlastic he twitches his cheek to choose how to spell words, im serious but anyways the reason it cuts so fast is because they cut out the part where he chooses what to say, to make the video faster
The “big bang”, as it is colloquially called, does not have a beginning or a before. The 0-point along this timeline would be considered a universal singularity: the universe without space or time. It does not exist in any real or temporal sense, as it is simply an encoded, holographic version of the entire 4-dimensional space-time continuum that stretches on into eternity… and an unobservable abstraction, at that. This satisfies the minimum uncaused “something” that epistemology requires.
If everybody in the world was Stephen Hawking, society would collapse. Sure, he's a genius who is very important to science, but the world needs more than brilliant scientists. His intelligence goes only so far.
@The1994Gforce From another interview I watched, he gets the questions in advance, and then prepares his responses. He only types (or forms words) at one, two words a minute.
Looking closely, you can see he uses movements of his body that are just enough to be sensed by his computer, and he controls which words to say. One part you can see is when he moves the upper part of his lip.
How on Earth can you talk about him like that... you don't even know him.I might not either, but i sure wished i did. He is an amazing guy and he cares about this world. If you have something to say about him, then tell me.You need to have respect for this man. thank you and have a nice day. :)
@drinndrann he made a high tech computer before he was paraltzed becuase he knew he was going 2 be permanently paralyzed sooner or later. The computer reads his mind basicly. You see that thing by his eye? It reads a certain brain wave that is suppose to be for talking but instead translates to the computer. Its fucking incredible you can read about it on his blog. He realy is 1 of the smartest pplz alive.
@KingOfShadows1500 I believe, if I remember correctly, the computer is controlled by his own brain or nervous system. When he thinks about what to say, the computer picks up on it and says it out loud for him.
@Decreasion i think so man im too sure though by the videos ive watched i see he has a very small amount of movements in his face like at the end of this video he kind of smiles i would love to know myself to be honest he truly amazes me !!!
If before the birth of this Universe not even time was there then how did the chance get time to create the Universe? If nothing was there then how come chance was there? By chance? Chance of what? @TheRammo He can move his eyes, so the computer displays letters, words and phrases on the screen, and by looking at them, he can arrange them into sentences.
after he says "maybe" at the end of the video he says something along the lines "i would tell you what i think but you have my sympathies" its on a separate video
@MrKinkykent he can make sentence with something under his eye. but that fast is impossible that's why he answered the question before he started on this interview.
He's completely right that we should start spending the greater part of our efforts to expanding our life as a species beyond planet Earth, and the sooner we start, the better. So, we should be wasting less time on trying to make life on Earth more comfortable as it will inevitably come to an end; sooner or later.
If it were possible to convert thoughts to words without movement, we would no longer need juries to determine guilt or innocence. We would just hook up someone to Hawkings talking machine and know exactly what the suspect was thinking. Anyone who believes Hawking is capable of communicating with the outside world seriously needs a check up. It is very doubtful there is any mental activity going on inside his head at all.
Stephen Hawkings is special and amazing. Being paralyzed and being not able to talk is shouldnt be made fun of. Read Out Of My Mind so you can really feel how he feels
Quite the contrary, you just took what I said out of context and linked them together to try and prove your point. I never once said what you just quoted. I said if society right now WASN'T balanced, we'd have a dictator and such, but we don't since it is. I said society would collapse if we all were scientists instead of our own individuals like we are today since we'd be missing core components to society.
@pokemonhat He has limited mobility in his hands. He uses his fingertips to navigate text on his computer, choosing phrases and words to be spoken through the synthesizer. He's been using such technology for a long time, so he has the practice to respond quickly and clearly.
I've always loved Stephen's smile.
My love for his smile increased after reading The Black Hole War. Stephen's smile was mentioned a lot in that book.
Plus, I'm glad he's still able to smile, with all he's been through, and all he knows
I'm glad that he smiled at the end. It just marked a smile on my face as well.
He's just looking up the answers on his computer
No. That's a part of how he "speaks"
cupof acid No. That was me making a cruel joke
??? That's how he sees what he said. Plus he can't type. The only muscle he can move is his cheek.
cupof acid
Yes I know that, I was making a silly joke about the poor man, who although paralysed has one of the greatest brains in the world.
Look up joke and embrace the concept, it might make your life less miserable.
Says the man who's name is yook fooh
Love the smile he gives at the end.
"Do you think we will survive?"
"...Maybe."
The smile on his face at the end, where he answers "maybe" to the question about our survival, is priceless!
Love that smile at the end. Love you Dr. Hawking!
@QuibbyFailed I find him incredibly inspiring. welcome..yea i agree, its truly amazing that he is even able to do this.
i love how he smiles at the end. :)
at the end ''maby..' and a freaking scary smile!
it was the most epic smile i have ever saw, espcially given the whole context of the situation and the of the question.
gotta love the "maybe" and the smile at the end

LOL I LOVE HIS SMILE!
I love this guy. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm serious. He is so inspiring.
his smile.. that smile is more than 1000 words
i like when he says maybe. that smile he gave was awesome
I admire this guy. For his determination even though he got that disease he has not faded away to nothing.
0:58 haha post it! look the picture at the back "A+ goodgrades" hahahaha
"We are in danger in destroying ourselves in our greed and stupidity." He is a true genius. Keep going, Mr. Hawking.

"Maybe." - I love him. What a great person.
I have one question... Do they prepare the questions and answers before the interview or how does he answer that fast?
"you have selected Sam as the computer default voice" LOL
@TeetoPlastic yeah he has certain common phrases that he can select but all his interviews are given to him in paper form before it takes place.
this man is an inspiration, he has a passion for knowledge that helps the human race as a species and hes paralyzed, this little kids that are " depressed " should get over it, Stephen shows us how to use your brain...

Looking at him smile made me put a smile on my face to
Listening to: "Patrice O'Neal on O&A #93 - Everybody Hates Steve Carlesi" brought me here.
love the cheeky smile at the end :P
That just blew my mind and it was only a couple minutes of him talking.
No, there's just more education than academic education by going to college. @MrJoaolayne Actually, he does move his mouth. His cheek muscles are one of the few muscles that still work.
I've got so much respect for this guy..

@hatntops hahahahahaha! My favorite vid!
What does the TTS system that Stephen use?
I think people should start paying more attention to this guy. He obviously knows what he's talking about.
lol its funny how he smiled when he said maybe at the end of the video
@n00buler89 no he doesnt
he is almost fully paralyzed, he controls the voice from his cheak,
he used to use his hand movements to select it, but he doesnt use that anymore
@TeetoPlastic he twitches his cheek to choose how to spell words, im serious but anyways the reason it cuts so fast is because they cut out the part where he chooses what to say, to make the video faster
@Grabarek94
it takes about 15 minutes for Hawking to write a 40 word sentance using that computer, he controlles it with his eyes.
@SaintTroll
Damn. I feel for you. It's a sad day when someone close to you dies.
It is absoulotely REMARKABLE pn what he says on every vid of him on youtube!
This satisfies the minimum uncaused “something” that epistemology requires.
what does he have the microphone for?
"Do you think we will survive?" - nailed me
+mastertheillusion See Battlestar Galactica
If everybody in the world was Stephen Hawking, society would collapse. Sure, he's a genius who is very important to science, but the world needs more than brilliant scientists. His intelligence goes only so far.
Respect, nuff said.
How new is his speaking system? Is there any more modern system that could help him conduct lived interviews, meaning not pre typed?
@The1994Gforce
From another interview I watched, he gets the questions in advance, and then prepares his responses. He only types (or forms words) at one, two words a minute.
when he smiles at the end hahaha legend
Looking closely, you can see he uses movements of his body that are just enough to be sensed by his computer, and he controls which words to say. One part you can see is when he moves the upper part of his lip.
@N00b1n4T0R64 Agreed. That's probably the most wonderful moment I've ever seen. Despair and hope, all in one little smile.
That's a very sweet smile Stephen Hawking made at the end :D.

@TheRammo He can move his eyes, so the computer displays letters, words and phrases on the screen, and by looking at them, he can arrange them into sentences.
now that smile after "maybe" really creeped me out
after he says "maybe" at the end of the video he says something along the lines
"i would tell you what i think but you have my sympathies"
its on a separate video
"by our greed & stupidity" so true he is on to something
@MrKinkykent he can make sentence with something under his eye.
but that fast is impossible that's why he answered the question before he started on this interview.
He's completely right that we should start spending the greater part of our efforts to expanding our life as a species beyond planet Earth, and the sooner we start, the better. xD at the end the daugher looks in to the camera, after he said: "maybe" xDD

hope that sooner or later they should invent something for dr. hawking that would make him easier to communicate (faster and at ease).
hawking: maybe... **smile**
that just made my existence =)
interviewer: you think we will survive?
hawking : maybe (best smile ever)
