  • The Washington Post columnist and political commentator George Will has been a staunch and unshakable advocate for conservative policies for more than four decades. Calling conservatism in the Age of Trump "a persuasion without a party," he has left the Republican Party whose titular head he rejects (but not his court picks). Special correspondent Ted Koppel talks with Will about the state of politics, as well as one of the more hot-button topics of the day: baseball.

    Will defines conservatism much the way Edmund Burke would. He sees conservatism as the preservation and application of enduring principles that take into account the lessons of history and the truths of human nature. Thus, it is incomprehensible that Will would advocate the election of a Democratic president who shares none of these. That presidential power would be used to continue to undue American foundational principles. In my mind, this makes Will a fool, who, though appearing to be eminently logical, is driven by his emotions and hatred for the lack of refinement displayed by Trump.

      The fascist form of socialism, i.e. the merger of the corporation and the state, has become so ingrained into the fabric of conservatism that people like George Will have no clue as to what a real conservative actually might be. The more democratic you are in reality the more conservative you are also. That only makes sense if you define your terms by the root meaning of each political concept and know that each idea's precise definition is essential to the whole meaning of a democratic constitutional government !!!!

      @N Care to explain? I disagree with your assumptions entirely, but happy to hear you defend them. For me, I see a run away purity test culture where groups are all too willing to make people they disagree with so hyperbolically "other" that it is easy to attack, degrade, dismiss, and deride them. The loudest voices are focused on preaching black & white statements to their own choirs and show little care in even seeking to understand the other side's thinking or admitting that for many issues, there are gray positions and not everything is all black or all white. That's all "nuance" means most of the time--a willingness to admit the gray exists at all and speak to it and seek to understand it rather than happily talking past it and doing the whole "you are with me or against me" thing. Speaking with nuance is a willingness to seek compromise and common ground.

    Dear Mr Koppel and Mr Will, Thank you Mr Kopell for your dedicated service in your profession that today is in upheaval and disarray. Thank you for your ability to get to the heart of every issue I have had the pleasure to hear you discuss. Thank you Mr Will for your excellence in writing English and making us all see the great diversity and descriptive powers of the English - American - language and your great devotion to getting the truth as you see it out to the people. If I may in this small way try to get a point across to both of you it is this. No man would ever allow the government to decide on any issue concerning his body. How can anyone in 2020 - I’m being hopeful here … Mr Will … how can anyone dictate to a woman in America or around the world what to do with her body? I am shocked to see the lessons of the 1960’s have gone right over conservative men’s heads. Individualism is a sacred right. No one should have a say over someone else’s body. The translation is this: We judge you so incompetent, Ms, Miss, Mrs, ec., we judge you so incompetent to know what is good for your body that we are going to make that decision for you. Oh, and by the way, I’m a man and no one is going to tell me what to do with my body. For the good of the Republic and for women’s rights in America and around the world, can we please stop telling women what to do with their bodies? They know what’s best because they rely on their instinct and their intuition, something most men don’t pay much attention to. I am appalled that someone of your stature, Mr Will, could ever be in favor of intervening on the choice of a woman. It doesn0t fit with your intellect. Long live freedom of the press and long live women's rights. Women: stand up for your rights!

    • @cjstatman
      @cjstatman 5 років тому

      David Te'Kannon I guess individualism is a sacred right for everybody except the babies in the womb. You say we shouldn't make decisions for women about what to do with their bodies, but apparently it's ok to make a decision for that human being inside the womb as to wether it gets to live or die. When a woman becomes pregnant her body is no longer just her own, there is another human being in that body who should be entitled to the same "sacred rights" as everyone else. It is a much more complicated issue than just being in control of their own bodies. That argument would be valid if the government were telling them how many children to have or that they had to have a hysterectomy at a certain age; those actions would indeed be taking their choices away from them and would be wrong. But in the case of pregnancy, there is another life at stake and it becomes much more complicated and nuanced. I don't have all the answers and I don't presume to know what women feel or think when it comes to this issue. I just feel that the living being in the womb is entitled to the same rights as anyone else and I wish that when this issue is discussed, that more thought, consideration, and discussion were given to that point.

    • @tekannon7803
      @tekannon7803 5 років тому

      Thank you for a very well written response. It’s obvious that your beliefs trump anything I could say, because you’re a woman. But as a man who knows women, I believe a woman’s instinct is far more acute than any made-made law that is imposed on them. The fact is a woman knows what’s best for her and her baby. What is sacred is human life. Who would you want to have as your guide if you were pregnant? A law or your own moral compass?

    • @cjstatman
      @cjstatman 5 років тому

      David Te'Kannon Thank you for your respectful reply. First, let me say that I am a man, not a woman. That is why I said that I don't presume to know what women think or feel on this subject. Secondly, you make a great point about the law versus my own moral compass; I would not like the law to govern my every move. My only point is that the woman is not the only person involved that has rights. The unborn baby's rights are too often not considered or even acknowledged and I just wish that would change. That is why this is such a complicated issue and as I said before, I certainly don't have the answer. Because, I agree, to a degree, that certainly women do have their rights as well. As I say, complicated and nuanced. Thanks for a good, healthy discussion on a very sensitive topic.

    Shortly after reading George’s column about Innisfree Village I visited the farm. That was 1974. It still exists and even grown some. A commune where “challenged” residents are equal with the workers... funded in part by capitalists that might have a challenged family member keeping them from the main stream of life. All kinds of challenges are at the farm - both mental and physical. They work the fields, the dairy, the kitchen, bakery, the store, the tractors, artwork, Weavery and more. Situated in the Blue Hills of Virginia.
    George’s Down syndrome son was only a couple years old then and the column was to view the care of challenged people from the standpoint of the future.
    And now the challenged are far better treated by society and special ed teachers are now the higher paid then lesser paid. I made two trips to Innisfree only months apart and met with the founder who just wanted to make a better life for those who may be among the remaining few generations of the challenged due to genetics... which is slowly happening.
    One woman with a pretty voice only had a normal face on one side and monstrous looking the other side. Very hard to look at. It was after dinner that I left in my little red Fiat. It was a pleasant weekend for me and several gathered around as I was about to drive home. Then a pretty voice said “Have a safe trip Bob” and my eyes met a challenged person face-to-face.
    But for George’s son it looks like he’s hit it out of the Park.

    My daughter Sarah was born 5 November 2019. Born a Mongoloid, one of the first questions we were asked: what are we going to do. Asked incidentally by a Chinese physician. Our response: what do you mean? The meaning being are we going to take her home? Later that day, our regular physician came to see us and said that she seemed a perfectly healthy baby and we should take her home and treat her like our other children, which is what we did. Today she is 35, quite happy, and healthy. Not all Down's babies are healthy and over the years, I've known several born with heart conditions who didn't make it out of childhood. It's tough losing a baby, even one not your own, but I do believe they have a right to try. Down's syndrome shouldn't be a justification for abortion. I can think of a dozen or more reasons but not DS.

      After a lifelong career as a republican, renouncing his membership in that club *probably* spoke louder to anyone listening than what his choice in a single election would be.
      That said, he did say it was going to be a binary choice....and that beginning to heal the country meant choosing someone OTHER than Donald Trump while making a choice in a binary situation.

      Conservativism that George Will promotes does not promote Paloconservatism or a desire to return to another time. Instead Conservatives like Will promote societal progression through Free Will and Enlightened Virtue. In other words you know what's best for you, so go to do it... but keep in mind how that may affect everyone around you.

    The Republican Party left the Conservatives years ago. George even admitted that if we maintain Republican control of the Senate so "not much will happen" (a staggering objective), it would heal the political divide to replace President Trump. In other words, let's get a Republican in there who will do the Dems' bidding and tell 65 million Americans to stop interfering with the DC Swamp.
