This is a paper I presented for debate to the Cornell Political Union on the subject of the gentleman in modern society. I discuss the current crisis men face, and how the ideal of the gentleman answers that crisis.

With that beautiful painting and those two busts along with that grand piano and beautiful wooden interior, this debate could not have been conducted in a more appropriate venue.

It is a beautiful space. I also gave a talk on beauty in this room.

As a man of letters, you rightly believe that this Platonic ideal gentleman should have an at least broad outline knowledge of the arts and literature. I would like to add to this idea, that this gentleman should also have that same level of knowledge about the sciences and technology. There's the principle elaborated in the educational institutions founded after the enlightenment that they rightly should be dedicated to the arts and sciences; that one lacking in learning of either of them would be considered incomplete intellectually.

Yes it does need gentlemen. Yet it has rewarded non-gentlemen for far too long. Look at any tv show or movie or some books. The non gentlemen wins way too much.

      IRL women despise gentlemen.

While I agree with the sentiment, swap "gentlemen" with "nice guy" and these statements do seem kinda soy

@@OrdoConcordis Indeed. Men will not overcome these hardships with a more intense application of soy.

@@OrdoConcordis A gentleman is not a "nice guy." A gentleman has conviction and strength, but expresses it with dignity and respect. Being a pushover is not being a gentleman.

@@DrJordanBCooper Rather than seeking to be "gentlemen," whatever that may mean, we should seek to be fully integrated men in the Jungian sense.
Most of the "gentlemen" I've known were deeply closeted in one way or another and only presented their public respectability as a mask.
Of course, masks are always temporary.

The commercial between your speech and the next is a college advertisement and it featured only girls in the video. Clear example of what you just spoke about. We are doing our absolute best to raise a gentleman! Our son just got his Eagle and I'm showing this video to both he and his twin sister. Thank you!

Always good to hear you speak Dr. Cooper! Just wondering if you have any thoughts on how society might be able to push men into be gentlemen in a collective manner? It'd be great if we can see the whole debate! God bless!

Depends on what you mean by gentlemen. There's a lot of idiots in our political class that would probably consider themselves gentlemen.

Many of the problems you point out are not new - I would argue that most of them date back to the Second World War or even further, it's just that the consequences are now reaching critical mass and worsening at an accelerating rate.

The judgment of God is upon us for quite a while. The decline of society is the manifestation of this. Whether it’s people not knowing their gender, boys not knowing their fathers, fathers not teaching their boys, moms not teaching their daughters simple things like cooking…the list is seemingly endless.
In my area (Mid-West) 82% of Lutheran high school students go on to college and 96% of Catholic school kids go to college also. Compare that with public school children it’s in the 20 some % range. This can be the result of the stability of the family, the nucleus of society. Godless culture=judgment in life. The judgment of the hardening of hearts is the cause. God is doing His two-fold work, two sides of the same coin, Saving and Judging. All one has to do is study the history of the OT church.

Do you support the exist of an aristocracy?

    • @DrJordanBCooper
      @DrJordanBCooper  Місяць тому +3

I support Cooper's idea that without an Aristocracy there is inevitably going to be some group of people which fills that void. This is the reason for the obsession with celebrities and/or billionaires of one kind or another. He proposes that this gentlemanly class would serve as a *kind* of Aristocracy. Of course, a tie to the land is really essential for the Aristocracy to actually work, so I think there is a bit more to it than that.
