Pruning Young Avocado Trees (Why, How and When)

  • How do you make your avocado tree grow big and strong? Pruning is such an important part of keeping your trees healthy and happy. It encourages more leaves, branches and thicker stems. BUT IT'S SCARY. In this video, I prune many young avocado trees to encourage their growth - I also do it so that you don't have to be afraid. Cutting avocado trees doesn't need to be scary.
    All of these seeds are between six months and twelve months old. You may notice some of them have multiple stems (polyembryonic) - I'm experimenting around with what I'm doing with these because I just want to see what happens - gotta be adventurous to learn, sometimes!

      Im dying inside!
      I planted pits as I ate them in a massive pot directly into soil. Every time I tried in water they molded or got gross ... out of nowhere-i forgot they were there- they started to grow.
      I left them alone and I have a mini avacado forest. I never cut them. (What happens in the wild when a seed drops?)
      Now the other half of the pot is growing and just got leaves. I WANT BRANCHES but am having a hard time actually doing it.. Reading up on it... but chopping down growth is killing me... where can we see the results - anywhere!!??🤯

    Thank you for this video, it is exactly what I was looking for!! I had read all over the internet that you need to cut a six inch seedling down to three inches, but I didn't see any examples of this process and I was scared to lose my first avocado seedling! I've already done the deed but finding your video has definitely calmed the nerves a whole lot. Cheers!

    I loved the video! thank you! I have never trimmed mine but I want to. My avocado is like 50cm (about 8 inches) and it has leaves only in the top half, it is just growing a new set of leaves on top and the old ones are all 80% brown 20% yellow-greenish, so almost dead. Should I cut the top half even if I leave it with no leaves in the trunk? (Wheater is sunny and spring is just arriving here), or should I chop it when the new set of leaves is done forming and prune just above the new set of leaves? Thank you!!!

I have been tying everything to save my plant, and have gotten the bugs away but it hasn't been able to grow new leaves, they just shrivel up and die black. Hi Scott, great video. It's pretty funny that there are so many vids on UA-cam about pruning avocado trees, in which the person showing how acknowledges it can be traumatic. I have a question for you about this. I have a small tree that I grew from seed about three years ago. It is about 12-16 inches tall. About 6-8 months ago, I noticed many of the leaves in the lower canopy were dying off. They all had black tips, which indicated too much salt in the soil. I pruned the dead leaves away, leaving a very leggy tree with 3-4 leaves on top. It's doing OK, but very leggy. Last week, I went away for a few days and asked a friend to come over and water my plants and feed the dog. She drenched my avocado tree's soil on multiple days, and now it has root rot. The leaves are wilting and I don't think it is going to recover. Can I prune it midway up the trunk, cutting all the leaves off, without killing it?

  • @TheBenNagy

    Are you able to plant the stem cuttings?

      This is a great question! I guess it’s possible, but I haven’t actually tried it.
      Leave it with me, and keep an eye out for it on the channel in like, a year’s time 🥑

    Hello! So after you prune it, do you leave it open or do you kinda cover it??

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  3 роки тому

      I just leave it open - I've never encountered a problem :)

    What happens if you wait until the trees are older? Like 1 year or so?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree
      @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree  4 роки тому

      Fruit Trees in general need pruning throughout their lives for maintenance, a year old tree wont have any problems getting a prune :)

    i've grown two avocados and it's been more than six months. they're growing quite tall (around a meter) and i haven't pruned them yet. can i still prune them or just let them grow taller until they *must* be pruned (to preserve space)?

    • @ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree

      It's up to you, ultimately. I've been meaning to make a video about what actually happens to an avocado tree when pruned - but I'm still learning! My understanding at this point is this; when tree is pruned it essentially goes into 'crisis mode'. It detects that it's been damaged and uses more energy than usual for cell growth, making it grow faster with more leaves, whilst also thickening the trunk.
      Part of keeping trees is knowing when to prune them. If it's indoors out of the wind and it's not flopping over, you can get away with thinner trunks. - but really, it's up to you. Good luck!

      @@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree thanks! i'll consider to prune them when their branches are long enough. i just wanna make sure at the very least they'll bear few fruits in the future and relocate them to a bigger place

      I would imagine so!! I actually have a few coffee saplings I’m considering pruning - I need to look into it first though.

    Hard to believe they can continue to grow being cut in half and no leaves left. Even though I checked out a few sources and so far they all say/show, this is how ya grow one...But 5 to 13 YEARS before I get Avocados, Wow!!!

    I’ve been to a funeral I wasn’t planning to attend to.
    I just wanted to know where exactly to cut my little avobaby. 🤦‍♀️🤣
    Now I have to recover to be able to do that and go through that trauma over and over again...
