The Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games were a landmark in the way we currently celebrate the Olympic Games, with several Olympic firsts happening in the Dutch city.
With double the number of female athletes, the first Olympic stadium flame and much more the Games provided many Olympic debuts.
For the first time, a symbolic fire was lit during the Games. The fire was lit in a cauldron that was placed at the top of a tower in the stadium, which had been designed by Jan Wils, a celebrated Dutch architect.
At the Opening Ceremony, the team from Greece led the Parade of Nations, with the host Dutch team marching in last. Greece-first, hosts-last has been Olympic protocol ever since.
The number of female competitors more than doubled as women were finally allowed to compete in gymnastics and athletics, and Asian athletes won gold medals for the first time.
    National Olympic Committees: 46
    Athletes: 2,883 (277 women, 2,606 men)
    Events: 109

How awesome is it that you're uploading this old footage! 84 years ago that the OS were held in my country, I didn't even know that we once had an OS to host!

This was really neat to watch. I had no idea that Amsterdam actually hosted the Olympics once! However, there's a bit of sadness in watching this too, because it makes me wonder how many of those participants died during WW2, which would begin only 11 years later.

A lot and 5 of the gold winning women gymnastics teams and their coach were murdered in concentration camps...

@@tvdsje How sad. Those poor people had no idea what was ahead of them in the following decade!

I think I read that most of the athletes at the 1912 games had died during WW1

i don't get the weird juxtaposition of classic footage from the twenties w/ generic, modern music. there must be something in the public domain that would mesh with the images more appropriately. having said that, I am glad that the footage is being posted on here at all THNX

No space for it. The Netherlands Is way too small. Especially now with all the new sports. It's very expensive and no room to build stadiums. This was a one time only. But we did introduce the Olympic flame. And that's still a thing. So there is always some Dutch in every Olympic Games
