Macabre live in 2013 is a must. It's even longer and more experimental than this, it required Die to switch between three different guitars (two electrics in different tunings and an acoustic), and to top it all off they nailed it live, and at the time Shinya (drums) had broken ribs and Kyo had the flu.
Kyo is consummate. He lives it all every time. So much pain. Love this band. I remember watching the whole live stream this is from and just being worried about him. This is his outlet though. His catharsis. And not just for himself, there's a quote something along the lines of "I don't scream just for myself, but for those who can't" (that's not a direct quote, just a recollection.) Dir en grey really go to dark places, though... This is the stuff that gets me through the pain. There's a few bands that go to the dark places for the sake of others, it's why I enjoy the Visual Kei scene. Bands like Kizu and Arlequin, very expressive and deep lyrics of introspection and existential questioning. ... That comment you mentioned took me awhile to write, I've spent anywhere up to two hours writing my essays (lols), and sourcing links, it makes me happy that you appreciate it. A lot of the bands I listen to you would never find as they belong to a domestic Japanese scene and the song titles and band names are usually written in Japanese. Anything I can do to make it easier on the reactor I will do.
This is great… no…. Wonderful… how you explain yourself and the music you are opening others to. Let me just say, thank you for letting/teaching others about the truly gifted music artists we have here in Japan. And especially for the time you take in writing/texting all the info. as well. Your are appreciated.
They gave 110% even with no one there. The gave everything they had as a duty to fans stuck at home in quarantine during lockdown. I just think that's fucking amazing.
The power of Dir en grey is unrivalled. If you ever have the chance to see them live, don't hesitate! But don't expect to come out the same as you entered, either. I can really agree with passio's and rabid black's comments there. They are truly cathartic and they chance the way you look at youself and mankind. I am not so much into heavy music but Dir en grey has been my main exception for years because of that. Please do "Ware, yami tote" like cannors logan suggests. I am so excited to see what you make of this side of them. But also sukekiyo "Elisabeth Addict". I did not see a link yet so I will add it here ua-cam.com/video/sBFIUuzGXvc/v-deo.html
Your face when Kyo started stomping the mic cable was the same reaction I had when I saw them in NYC and they played this song on their last North American tour. I didn't even know the meaning of the lyrics yet as I hadn't read a translation, but the pure power of the moment absolutely came through and the entire room was trapped in the spell and vibe the band had created. I'm so happy you're going on this journey of getting in to the band. Welcome to the family
I just need to say how much I enjoy your reactions. Watching this with you was a wonderful experiece that really took me back to 2020 when I saw this live - the original stream but also my real live experience during their European Tour. I can see in your face that you can at least imagine how much of an impact this song has in a live setting - what you cannot yet imagine is how it feels after Ranunculus and being just a few feet away from Kyo as he rips his guts out, cradles them like a child and then kicks the shit out of them. I actually cried when he started to sing after that and the chorus had me shaken to the bone. There had been a lot of stuff going on in the past 2 years of my life and I hadn't really cried but right there it all came out and it helped me so much. During the pandemic now I think back to that moment quite a lot and I think it really gave me strengh. But I wasn't the only one. You could feel the emotions radiate from every single person in that audience. The make-up and performance has aspects from the pierrot (sad clown) and plays with pantomine and metaphors a lot - for other lives [especially during the Withering to Death era] he used his own blood for example - during this tour he simulated knawing at his wrists and gathering blood in his hands which he then smeared over his eyelids - the fact that there was nothing there had a really weird impact on me . Just for a little more background to THIS live: It was broadcasted live to UA-cam and was held to open the new KT Zepp venue in Yokohama on March 28th 2020 - as you can imagine a very difficult time to open a new venue. Of course, back then no-one knew how long we were all stuck in quarantines and the like and the band stated in interviews that were held [and also streamed live] right before the concert that they did not want to look at the things that were impossible right now but instead do the things that very ONLY possible right now - doing a full concert in an empty hall for a virtual audience from all around the word - for free. The original stream was a bit shaky at points and the audio was a bit raw so the version you have seen here comes from the Ochita Koto no aru sora single release for which they edited and remastered the full concert. Since you have a lot of requests for Dir en grey already I really want to support the requests for Kizu's 0, Dimlim's Aisou no tsuki and Nazare's Koufuku-ron (幸福論 is the Japanese title for Seneca's Guide to Happiness) that rabid black mentioned in his comment. And add Kagerou - Watakushi ua-cam.com/video/UL_AUNP_KlA/v-deo.html and Versailles - Thanatos ua-cam.com/video/9T_HSlxqzBA/v-deo.html to the list. I have never seen anyone react to Kagerou [they have been disbanded for a while now and the singer has died in 2010 but they were really awesome and I wish more people would know about them.] Versailles on the other hand are frequently reacted to but I have been trying to get someone to react to Thanatos since forever and the song just never gets through ^^' it might not be their best or most technical but I really love it. And as always: sukekiyo please :) Now I feel greedy 😂But since you said you don't mind getting many requests well...have a great day!
Welcome to the world of Dir en grey. These guys take art and metal and fuse into this genre bending craziness. Been listening to them since 2001, and they just keep getting better. This is definitely one of the best songs they've written. I would definitely check out their song Macabre from 2013 Tabula Rasa. It has english subs as well, and its one of their best songs too.
Yoo just stumbled into this! Great reaction too. Since you started with their heavier and more proggy stuff you should do their ballads. Now, like I said from the post I did on the list of songs, this performance is from a "live stream" they did last year. The performance was behind close doors without an audience. The screams you heard from Kyo before the song started, those were from the song that had ended. Kyo, is basically wearing a clown makeup. Since in the song there is a phrase that mentions a clown. The drummer, Shinya has his own UA-cam channel and Instagram. He is the most popular of them all; 🤔 I think because he is a very sweet, cute and adorable guy. Diru is absolutely amazing! Kyo is so raw and real and that is what made me love them so much. I had the pleasure of seeing them live in late 2019, I cried like a baby when they performed this song. So powerful. I have enjoyed watching someone new react to there songs. 😊
Different Sense is a great song, but I don’t recommend you watch the music video, I love it but I wouldn’t want you to get weirded out lol. But yeah, back in the day, he would self mutilate on stage, mostly fishhooking his mouth or scratching himself. I’m not sure if you are squeamish, but I figured I should mention this. 2. Tsumi to batsu, gosh where do I begin with this song… the lyrics are very disturbing to say the least. Think of every possible bad thing…they’re probably in the lyrics lol. 3. Vocals aren’t fantastic. They’re still good, don’t get me wrong, but his voice has a lot of off moments in these performances. His voice was incredibly damaged and I think he was in a lot of pain. HOWEVER, the screams and growls in these are incredible. Here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/kLuuQBWMb_s/v-deo.html

Yay another Dir En Grey Song! Couldn't put it better than you, Kyos performance is indeed pure emotion. It got me when I first saw their live performance and it still gets me. Hearing them and seeing Kyo going all in always gives me chills. Also great to see another one comparing them partly to Tool. Not that they are similiar but you definitely can see somewhat same technicallity and definitely unreached talent in their songs. For me these two bands are the best in the world. While you nailed it with "he doesn't filter anything" I think part of the true magic is that everyone else in the band doesn't miss a beat. Their live shows wouldn't be half of what they were if the rest of the band wasn't able to react to Kyo on the fly. The truly magical part is everything coming together, and the band being able to somehow work around kyo being a psycho is really what sells each of their performances.
They're all true pros in the most absolute way. These days they're one of if not the greatest combination of talent and experience I've ever seen. They've kept that magic for decades, while most bands have it for one album.
Now, what I'm gonna say is by no means a hard and fast rule, not even close... BUT, if you want to find more songs by Diru of certain types, you're better off checking the album it's from +/- an album. They have a diverse as hell sound and have changed it up for damn near every album, and even within albums. That said if you hear a bunch from say, Dum Spiro Spero you can definitely hear a certain consistency. Album tracks like World of Mercy sometimes represent that wholly, other times they vary for no apparent reason. That said, that very reason is why I say if you like basically any form of metal, I can guarantee you'll like a song or album. Unless the singing in Japanese is a dealbreaker that is. They truly are artists more than musicians. The song is more than the lyrics too. Oftentimes the instruments play a role in the story too. Conveying usually about half the emotion Kyo does. Which out of context sounds like an insult, but getting that much anger or sadness or what have you from a drumkit is a feat no doubt.
The more I think about it, the more I hope someone points you in the direction of their songs Decayed Crow and Saku. Absolutely filthy, mindbending growls and screams that just set the listener on edge and on their heels. Especially Decayed Crow (Symphonic) - there's some kind of fry scream... Whistle... Thing that sounds suspiciously like he managed to put vibrato on which ... What the Fuck. Link with subs: ua-cam.com/video/CUGQICV6QM8/v-deo.html
You need to watch Lotus symphonic version live where he's not feeling good, his voice scratch but didnt give a fuck and still continue his show.. mad respect!! Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/tBhzKh2Whks/v-deo.html

I don't know if it's the case, but his mouth must be stained with his real blood, cause in these lives he used to mutilate and fishhooking himself
Were you watching a game, or is it the TV from some other room I hear in the video? 🤔
Did you see the list I sent as well? haha
This was actually from a person-less livestreamed show they done back in March last year but was later released on Blu-Ray.
It's one of their newest singles from late 2019 and is unknown if it's going to be on their newest album (no release date) that they are working on or not.
Hey great reaction! I recommend you a japanese band called "The Gazette" they are awesome live and the band has some DEG influences!
