    Seldom Scene was a favorite guest of Tommy Hunter for his Tommy Hunter Show which aired nationally in the 70's and 80's in Canada . That where they became a favorite of mine

      Actually, it was a dobro on a Linda Ronstadt album in the late 70s that brought me to the Seldom Scene and bluegrass.

    Thanks for sharing. I had a betamax once. And this truck driver thanks you for the great podcasts also. You can find the music but the interviews and stories are the real treasure.

    Outstanding!!! They were cutting edge Bluegrass back in the 1970's. Living in Richmond I went to the Birchmere many times to see them even after joining the USAF I had thee pleasure to see them in Japan. The best of the best!

    The Country Gentlemen and the Seldom Scene IMHO saved bluegrass music from extinction by adaptation of their style to different genres such as "If I were a carpenter" and "It's all over now baby blue".We attended a Seldom Scene concert at Camden Park in Huntington WVa and I talked to John Duffey and he remembered me from the early 60's when he was with the "Gentlemen'" and I was in the Army Stationed at Ft,Meade Md. and the Gentlemen played at a restaurant I think was called The Admiral....maybe.

    This brings back a lot of memories. I didn't see myself in the crowd shots but I think I was very likely to have been there. If not that night, then there were many similar evenings. Such a great band and I very rarely missed a Thursday at The Birchmere when I lived in the area during the early to mid '80s. Thank you so much for finding and sharing the show.

    My favorite -- the Phil Rosenthal version of Seldom Scene 1977-86. Of course, Phil's version of Muddy Water is the best.
    And shout out who got so many of us into Bluegrass/Newgrass -- Deejay Lee Michael Demsey of WAMU-FM 1982 to 2018 weekday afternoons.

    use to drive to D.C. from Richmond on Saturday just to hear 88.5 WAMU just to hear Bluegrass music all day......Fredericksburg was about where we could pick up WAMU to hear Katy Daly and other legends of WAMU. Back then there was no satellite radio with 24/7 Bluegrass so I as a fan chased the music......Saturdays and Friday evenings were my Bluegrass times at WAMU 88.5.....Good Memories........Lest we not forget the Bluegrass bands that played Wolftrap in Vienna Va. Dang I could go on and on!

      Those of us who lived in northern Canada, picked it up via skip radio when the weather conditions were right.
      Mostly Indiana , some Kentucky and Illinois stations that had big enough transmitters so the signal could ride off the clouds over the great lakes.
      Speaking of sound , the original recording must be very good, for the audio of this 3rd generation to be pretty darn good.
      Thanks for posting !

    Why does Mike move to the other mic to sing?

    • @dcsteelman
      @dcsteelman  Рік тому +1

      He also had a vocal mic by his instrument mic. If singing and playing happened quickly he stayed stage left. If he didn't have to back up or solo he preferred to get as close as he could to John & Phil, to get a better vocal blend in the trio.
