AMD should have supported this graphics card longer.

- We have looked at a lot of older AMD graphics cards on the channel and they have always come to surprise in what they can still do and this R9 390 is no different. With 8GB’s of VRAM and no new driver updates this card is still able to run some of the latest games fine. AMD cut this card off way too soon.

I still have this same card in my pc. I run all the games I play plus AutoCad
That's pretty awesome tbh
Other than the fact that Fortnite crashes and says the drivers are outdated I've not had any issues with this card I always turn all the settings to max and I haven't noticed anything.
Specifically I did look at some of the settings in Apex Legends and it says that I'm only getting like 60 to 70 FPS in the training area with Max settings so that's pretty good. It's harder to test when you're actually in a fight because obviously.
I had a 390x for about 3 years. It served me well. It was XFX, not MSI, but it was a fantastic card for 1080p
Back then I bought a 980ti and within a week it bricked itself.
Got my MSI 390 as a replacement. AMD for life! Now on a Red Devil 5700xt and it's a beast of a card still.
5700XT is still a great card. I need to get mine out and have a lay with it again.
@@TechLabUK when I'm pushing 2k 75+ fps in Cyberpunk with only shadows turned down to medium I'm absolutely golden for at least the next year. 7900 GRE/7800XT is likely my next purchase.
That 980 ti is 59% faster than the 390. I don't know why you were so happy with that downgrade instead of just RMA the card.
@@ScoutReaper-zn1rzRMA is annoying. Maybe he found it easier to just get a different card.
Man, look at what you got for $329! I know it was 2015 but still... that was a very good deal looking back.
Feels like neither AMD or Nvidia are interested in bringing similar products to market now.
They very much aren't anymore tbh and you can see that in the SKUs being released.
I got an RX 480 4GB Sapphire Nitro+ just before the crypto craze at a wonderful price of $114 after tax.
this was my very first graphics card in my very first gaming PC
got it in winter 2016 for 300 bucks brand new. The epic 390x sapphire nitro card with 3 fans and 2x8 pin power connector.
all cramped into a cheap sharkoon case with an overclocked fx 6300 @ 4,7 ghz.
i put a 240mm arctic watercooler on it (had to cut something out of the case to make it fit)
After overclocking the graphics card, this was a nice little heater in winter!
Draw a ton of power but ran every game flawlessly back then. I loved this PC. If i remember correctly, the whole PC cost me around 600 bucks BRAND NEW.
with a high end graphics card. Cant do that nowadays... nowadays u pay double that to get a decent PC.
I had an MSI 980 with the same cooler, I spray painted the red bits for a custom build, the red parts come off quiet easily.
Ahh, that's a great idea.
I had two r9 390pcs+ from powercolor (and used for a short time in crossfire config). Really robust and incredible performance for the price. I miss the quality from the olders gpus nowdays
Had a 390x from 2015 to 2021. Served me great. Even used it when playng Read Dead 2 at 3440x1440p at medium/low settings and achieved about 45 fps.
In 2015 I remember picking between the 390x and the gtx 970. I know I chose right. No way 3.5 gb ram would suffice in 2020-2021.
Use the NIMEZ drivers! You'll get a later driver than what AMD officially supports. You'll be able to run a lot of newer games, that require a later driver. I used them with a FirePro W8100, and was able to play more games, and that's a R9 290 core.
loved this video
would love to see a580 again
keep up the good work bro
Looks very similar to my old msi gaming x 1070 so quite a standard look for msi
I got one of them, and it was my only GPU until 2023 when I managed to get a 3080 Ti, the 3090 played all my games well, it's a great card, and my one is still in working order.
That's a huge upgrade to make, let's hope you get as much life out of the 3080Ti and you will have won the system again :D
Thanks, got all my PC parts except the RAM, case, M.2.S, and water cooler, second-hand off eBay, just got a used X570 AORUS XTREAM M.B. for under 200 pounds. A lot of good used bargains are around as long as you don't mind top end last generation parts,
i got this exact card during the gpu shortage from a Lot on ebay with a bunch of parts for $60 (USD). i was so happy it worked. it was a huge step up from 2x sli gtx 760 2gb. i love this card so much for saving me from the sad 760’s
Had the ASUS ROG one, beast of a card, undervolt is a must.
Lowering shadows res and disabling motion blur helps a lot.
Why are we even enabling motion blur in the first place? It's a setting that I never understood the usefulness of because every time I use it it just makes the game look all blurry whenever I look around (obviously) which is worse.
@@bland9876 racing games love motion blur to give a better feel of speed
@@Super-Poopa I only play like Mario Kart and Kirby's air ride and Diddy Kong racing and games like that so I don't know about motion blur in a racing game but what I do know is that in first person's shooter get that s*** out of there.
If you install the NimeZ drivers you can run more modern games, better performance.
R9 390 ! I was right, this GPU with nimez drivers is still decent
You were! You were one of the few lol. I might try those drivers to see if I can get those super new games to start.
@@TechLabUKThose drivers are insanely good for older cards, I came here into the comments to mention those drivers. It is still hit and miss with some games but most should work fine.
I have the 390 and it should perform just like an rx 580 in linux it does i also have a 6gb 280x and linux drivers it does way better
FX 8350 + R9 390 was my first build in 2015 ❤️❤️❤️
Try it with the open source Linux drivers with proton.
Really surprised that there is no mention of Nimez drivers within this video. Makes a review of using this card in 2024 seem a little shallow, somehow.
I generally test things with default / official setups as it will be what the majority will experience, unless it is a video on something specific like modded drivers etc. A few people have mentioned the Nimez drivers so will take a look into them.
Considering how well the R9 390 ran the games in this video I wonder if my RX 7900 XT will will be able to play games in 8 or 9 years at 1440p or 4K medium settings?!
Ohh I had two 390xs back in 2016, great cards
lmfao that was exactly what I was going to do but was overwhelmed by the needless decadence of such a thing. XD
Kudos to you though for having the balls to run these in crossfire.
@@hangemhighhilton never really worked out well, crossfire wasn't implemented or used well, at least in the games I tried. Ended up selling them for a Vega 64. Still got it
i still have a r9 390x rog strix. what a great card
Great video!! Still a decent graphics card for the price. Thanks again!
For the £40 I paid for it I think it is tbh. Waiting for a new version of the Steam OS to release and cards like this will be awesome again for some console type builds.
fantastic card and value
After nearly 8 years, I'm in the process of switching from my r9 390 15 6500, to a mid tier setup.
this card if I'm right should be right there with the performance of the 570 or 580, maybe somewhere close
if had drivers
RX 470 beats it by 22%.
What a beast !!
With nimez drivers, can it run the new games?
I am not sure, didn't try it but someone else commented about it so may look into it just to see.
Please try, @@TechLabUK. I have this as my back up card (currently in my system, actually) and with those new drivers I couldnt get Fortnite to launch oddly.
I actually have the sapphire nitro R9 390 end the sapphire 480 yes both are 8 gigs
I also have the 590 fat boy from XFX 8 gigs and then there's the 5500 XT
The low in cards that I have from AMD 550 4 gigabyte dual fan
Sapphire r7 270 2 GB
Sapphire 3870 512 megabyte with a 512 bus
I also have the 7990 I think that is a 3.5 gigabyte don't remember exactly
My top tier cards at the moment
Power color 7900 XT 20 gigabyte
And the Asus dual fan OC 2060 super TI 12 gigabyte
I bought that directly at microcenter
Future video card
For my white mid-game system
Will be either the ASRock steel Legends 7600 XT 16 GB
Or I'm just going to stick with the power color 7800 XT 16 GB hellhound Spectra White
Most likely I'm going to be going with the specter White
The PCB is even White
And I almost forgot my 8X AGP Asus 4680 1 GB
If you have an unsupported AMD card, I recommend dual booting linux.
Had this card and Nvidia Attacked it
That spiderman game made me laugh, someone made a game out of a gta5 no clip no grav bug??? 😮
What kind of power supply is good with that graphics card
600w is the recommended minimum.
😊👍
@@TechLabUKI think I have a problem when I can't run games even though there is a 650W power supply in the machine🙄
@@AntinAreenaOfficial What is the problem?
@@TechLabUK When I play, for example, Ranch simulator, it works for a while and then turns off the entire graphics card. It works fine in Stumble guys
So basically a 7970 GHz edition card with a bigger memory bus, 512 more shaders and 5 more Gigs of vram. This is the reason I got soured by AMD. I was looking for top performing cards not gradual refinement.
Imagine that Nvidia has recently just published new drivers for its old GPUs and AMD just left us with the Nimez Zone drivers. I've already tried the Nimez drivers on an R9 Fury and I can't believe the utter stupidity of leaving these cards without support. 🙈🙈🙈 P.S. Thanks to Nimez Zone. 🙌🙌🙌
Ya I can't play Fortnite because "there is a known issue with this driver and Direct X 12"
I don't really care about Fortnite anymore but I still find it sad.
I thought it was an Rx 580 from the thumbnail seems MSI kept that cooler design around for a few generations. AMD pulled Vega driver support before its time shame really when they are still selling brand new APUs with Vega graphics onboard. As for a an MSI themed build go for it, red and black always an eye catching combo.
Yeah, it's a shame AMD keep pulling the plug early, even if it's not for game improvements it would be nice to have them just update them as many games just wont start because of the driver versioning. I will see what I have around for an MSi themed build, maybe something a little retro now.
Yep, 329 still only gets 8gb of VRAM to this day
This GPU still has driver support on Linux thanks to the drivers being open source.
I think I have a different version of this card because it's not red. Anyways I can't play Fortnite on my card because it just crashes and tells me the drivers are outdated that is literally the only game I've had issues with that was related to the graphics card everything else is just if I was playing an old game that isn't supported anymore for whatever reason cuz that randomly happens sometimes very odd.
An example of other games not running are things like games for Windows live not working. Obviously that's not GPU related whatsoever.
Also looked in my card says XFX on it.
Wrong drivers installed
Its going to be supported for decades longer... On Linux.
My MSI R9 380 4GB died on me it was a solid card.
😢
Ah yes they should still support a refresh of a 2013 gpu.
Who says nobody uses DVI nowadays anymore? There are so many users with older LCD monitors with DVI connections in less developed countries and not many can afford to buy the latest new monitors with HDMI and Display ports! Terrible assumption!
True, many do but it is a deprecated technology now. new GPUs, in fact GPUs for a while now have not included it so it's not quite a selling point anymore.
I used dvi from 2012 till 2021 the last 2 to 3 years I use the display port
Didn't test alan wake 2 with max ray tracing
I don't test Alan Wake 2.
@@TechLabUK why?
@@gejamugamlatsoomanam7716 It's not really a game I play tbh and it's currently a dog. Might add it to the suite once they fix it.
its AMD, if it means they can save a dollar for not supporting GCN they will. the same company that laughed at the idea of AI cores on gpus when Nvidia launched the first RTX cards in 2018. look who has a $3 Trillion market cap now.
Pretty good card if you forget a gtx 1060 does just as much with only 120 watts.
1060 only has 3GB V RAM.
That's why I didn't swap my R9 390 for it when in had the opportunity to.
@@bland9876 There was also the 6gb vram version that came 1st.
@@mealot7613 well all I know is that when I booted up my friends graphics card task manager said it had 3GB.
@@bland9876 Ooh yeah nvidia likes to release several cards or configurations under the same name. Specially in the budget section. The 3gb version came after the 6gb and is cut down as it has less cores. From 1280 to 1152 and missing 8 tmus. That's nvidia for you. They make these cut down versions after the original release to get rid of pracial defective cores they ended up with.
@@mealot7613 maybe they should have called it the 1050 instead if it's so much worse.
Great card.
Buy cheap, don t buy overrated new stuff.
To be fair this card would still play 90% of the games I play lmao.
Why does this need 2x connectors when a rtx 4060 with one8pin destroys this in all benchmarks
Newer cards are more efficient I suspect.
1080p fsr balanced :O that's less than 720p damn
i fail to see any negative with this card.... its still viable .. because if a game doesnt work on it.. its not the cards fault ..its because the games shit and not worth playing.
The negative isn't really with the cards themselves, it's just because of the drivers. Games that wont start simply throw and error message on start up complaining about the driver versions. The card would still have the power to at least play them if not.
on linux the support is longer because drivers are open source
all the new games are trash anyway
Most new games are trashy tbf
@@TechLabUK were you gaming when fear combat was out in the mid 2000's? that game was a blast
@@1112223333111 Been gaming since the late 80s
i used this exact card until i got a 1660ti back in 2020. I purchased it used and used it for a few years before it finally died. I loved this card, and it overclocked like a champ. My current card (4070 ti) is the only card that comes close to how far i could push this 390.
I believe that Nimez modded drivers would be the answer you search for. They support older cards that AMD doesn't support anymore.
@@andreamichelezucchi8600 oh it wont post. its actually dead, not drivers.
Nice vid btw but are you able to test the RX 580 ROG STRIX edition?
I don't have a ROG Strix model of the RX 580. Only a Sapphire Nitro+.
