You can use natural structure but it will not last and you will have to continually replace it. You can use concrete or steel as well to create structures.

Bury tree stumps upside down. Have local FD clean root ball then bury 5-6 feet ( tree )leave 2-3 feet gap of tree then the rootball Put a few of them. They will last long after your gone. You really dont want concrete steel or plastics for CLEAN water

use old concrete blocks(stack them in circles or make varying structure shapes) and bricks(stack in piles), they do the job forever and no plastic. I agree the putting of plastic into the environment is just stupid. Plastic is out of control!!! Other alternatives is recycle old lumber, rot resistant lumber like osage orange/cypress, use them to build pyramid structures for deep water with concrete blocks in base for weight, shallow water use them to make low cage shapes for cover. Depending on how big the gaps are, depends on the size of the fish that will use it. However i know when you make concrete block structures that are round and filled with broken block your wood scraps, it attracts bass/crappie/walleye and a bunch of predators hunting minnows. The wood will support the growth of micro-organisms too, this will feed the minnows hiding in the structure. This is the best way to sustain your pond or lake for your life time

I agree with most readers, this type of structure is not attractive in clear water lakes. That is why we never use them, among other reasons.

You can use strictly natural structure, just know that you will have to replace it relatively frequently.
