How to agree in English | Grammar lesson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- Learn how to agree in the English language using the words "so" and "neither" with this grammar lesson.
In this video, I show you how to use the word "so" to agree with someone in the affirmative or positive. If there are auxiliary verbs in the original sentence, then we must use the same auxiliary verb when we agree. Example: I am hungry - "So am I." Without auxiliary verbs, we use the verb "to do" - For example - "So do I."
"Neither" is used to agree with somebody in the negative and the same rule regarding auxiliary verbs applies. Example: I am not thirsty - "Neither am I." Without auxiliary verbs, again the verb "to do" is used - For example - "Neither do I."
At the end of the English grammar lesson, I give you an exercise to test your understanding. Please answer the questions in the comments section and I will tell you if your answers are right or wrong :)

Hello Andrew, I really like learning your English lessons as they are very useful and important and the way you teach the grammar rules is very interesting. I know there are some English words that make the connection between two sentences such as: although, nevertheless, however, therefore, even though, finally and so on. Could you make a lesson to teach us about them, please? Thank you in advance for everything.

Here are my exercicies
*Michael Jackson loved children and so did Pope Joan Paul II
*Denzel Washington has a long film carrer and so has Morgan Freeman
*William Shakespeare isn't a Spanish name and neither is Charles Darwin
John Alexander Botero Cartagena Hello and thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. Here are my comments and corrections:
"Michael Jackson loved children and so did Pope Joan Paul II" --> Correct (very good)
"Denzel Washington has a long film carrer and so has Morgan Freeman" --> In this sentence, "have" is a MAIN verb, not an AUXILIARY verb. There is no auxiliary verb therefore we must use the verb "do" So the correct sentence is "Denzel Washington has a long film career and so DOES Morgan Freeman"
"William Shakespeare isn't a Spanish name and neither is Charles Darwin" --> Correct (very good)
I hope this helps.
Andrew
Andrew is handsome. -> So am I.
They played very well yesterday. -> So did we.

Hi Andrew, this is Claudia from Argentina. I have 3 questions about this video: 1. May I replace SO with EITHER? 2. Is there any reason why verb or auxiliary and subject change their positions in the sentence like in quesitions (f.e.: So do I instead of "So I do" ) 3. You said that "did" is past participle.... was that a mistake? Thanks in advance, I really enjoy your videos!
Explanation is really gud,ur Video helped me a lot sir.Thank u so muchhhhhh
Hello Andrew. How are you???
I want to know if I want to disagree with a person. What must I say?
Thank you my Dear teacher your teaching way is very understandable so I love you and your lessons teacher if you don't mind I wanna ask you a Question one of my friend said to me Never come my home from now on wards so here I agreed to what he said in a annoyed feeling. So I said OK I Shall not come either Hence I would like to know whether saying I shall not come too is correct or I shall not come either would you like to answer my question?
Hello Andrew! Here are my answers and a couple of questions.
Henry Pursell is the most famous composer of his country, so is Johann Sebastian Bach.
Henry Pursell had never travelled abroad, neither had Johann Sebastian Bach.
Do I have to use the auxiliary verb "had" if both of the persons are dead long ago, or "have" though?
Could we agree with somebody who use a modal verb in his negative statement saying "Nor (modal verb) I"?
Like that:
He could not run a hundred metre in ten seconds. Nor could I. (Does it sound English at all?)
Thanks in advance.
Elena Zayg Hi Elena, nice to see you again. First of all, both of your sentences are correct, perfect use of so and neither.
Yes, we use the past perfect "had" in that situation. "have" would be wrong.
Nor and neither are interchangeable so yes that sentence is correct. But "neither" is slightly more natural than "nor" when we use it by itself.
A more common use is when we use them together. Example: " *Neither* David Beckham *nor* Lionel Messi play tennis." (meaning = Beckham doesn't play tennis and Messi doesn't play tennis)
I hope that helps.
Andrew
Crown Academy of English Thanks Andrew! You explanation is very helpful.
Have a nice evening
Elena
Hello Andrew! I have a question...Is it correct to use "Me neither" instead of "Neither do I" ?
Hello, yes "me neither" can replace "neither do I", "neither am I", "neither can I"... etc (all of them) But "me neither" is slightly more informal and is not quite as good. "Neither do I" etc is much better and common.
I hope that helps!
Andrew
thanks :)
Teacher... you are talking about past participle or past simple?
What's about 'either'?
David is smart player and so is Alan!
David is not old and neither is Alan!
Andrew walked not to school yesterday and neither do I!
Thank you teacher very useful lesson for me .can you explain to me the difference between neither and either?
Hi Andrew !! Here is my exercise. Thanks very much for all !!!

Could you make a video on the differences between American English vs British?
Hello and thanks for the suggestion. It is on my list of future videos and I'll probably do it in a couple of months. What differences are you most interested in (vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation?) Thanks again for your positive comment.
Kind regards
Andrew
Actually, prepositions. Some are totally different and once you're accustomed to a certain combination of prepositions and when to use them, they sound very different/incorrect.
That's true, there are quite a few differences in how prepositions are used. I'll take note and include that in a future video :)
Andrew
very amazing lesson
+Ayman Gabr Excellent, I am glad that you like my lessons. Thanks for the comment.

My English is going to improve thank to you, so are my listening skills
your procedure is going to break the good teaching method. .. keep up Andrew
Hello~ Thank you for your video, but actually I know there is another way to agree someone
I like apple. Me too.
I do not like apple. Me either.
Is that correct??
Thanks again~
september Dan Yes that is correct. :)
"I like apples." and "Me too" is correct for informal spoken English yes.
"I do not like apples." "Me either" or "me neither" is correct for informal spoken English. "Me neither" is more common in British English and "me either" seems more common in American English.
Andrew
HI Andrew. At 9:14 you were calling "So did I" past participle. I was wondering if it is correct.
zixu wang Hi and thanks for your question"I *walked* to University today. So *did* I" Both are the past tense. The grammar is correct but it is called the past form, not the past participle, yes that's right. :)

Hello, dear teacher! May I ask: after'so' and 'neither' in the past tense do we use past simple or past participle? F.e: so did I.

Hi, Mr. Andrew. I'd like to ask, You've said "I've been TO London 3 times", would it be incorrect to place "in" instead "to"? "I've been IN London...? Thanks.
