    Your style of explaining the different topic of english grammar is very impressive.l would request you to upload a video explaining mid position of adverb of manner,especially when a sentence contains a auxiliary verb along with a main verb.several grammar books explain this topic in a confused way.

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  10 років тому

      fariba yamani "would" is quite difficult to explain in the comments because it is a word that we use in many different situations.
      But for the specific situation described in this video: "If I had seen you, I *would* have said hello."
      This is a conditional in the past. I say hello *IF* I see you. (in the past) We use *would* to describe that it is conditional.

I'm from Morocco and I'm a follower of your lessons that are very interesting I want to thank you about this in first, than I have some questions : must can have an other meaning if I'm not wrong we use it in obligation (you must do something..) and what is the difference between "may" & "might" "can" & "could" are they in the same tense? And do they have the same meaning in the sentence?

    Hi Andrew,
    At 12:00, on the answer about the second example, you have put (or you put ?) "He", talking about the dog. I was always taught that for a thing or an animal, we use "it".
    I am a little bit confused about that.
    Can you give me some informations please?

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  10 років тому +2

      19olivier72 Hi Olivier. You are right - we use "it" for objects and animals. But we make an exception for family pets (example cats or dogs) or animals we feel close to. If it is a dog that we see in the street that we do not know at all, we probably say "it" but if we are describing our family dog, we say he / she. :)

    At 6:59, you explained the certainty among must, could, and might. why? what is the criteria?
    I'm learning modal verbs and every content gives different explains about the certainty of 'could' and 'might'.

    Can you explain "couldn't" to me in this situation?
    For example:
    "They couldn't have turned off the light, so the bill was high!"
    Is it used as a modal verb of probability in the above sentence?
    Thanks!

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  10 років тому +9

      Sang Đào
      Hi, in my lesson, the 3 modal verbs of probability (must, could and might) were all in the PRESENT tense. We can also use them in the past tense ("must have", "could have" and "might have". They have the same meaning with the same degree of probability, except the action is in the past.
      So we can say: "The electricity bill is high so they couldn't have turned off the light." (quite sure) or we can say it a bit differently: "They couldn't have turned off the light because the electricity bill is high."
      In both cases, we say the bill is high (in the present because we have the bill now) and we put the modal verb of probability in the past (couldn't have) because that happened BEFORE receiving the bill.
      I hope that helps!
      Andrew

    Hello,
    Thanks for your helpful video.
    May I ask a question?!
    What did you use "have to" in the sentence"you have to try to forget about this man"?!
    I knew "have to" used for obligation.
    Is it possible to say "you should try to forget.." because have to used for law or rules.and should for giving advice.

      It is ME "have to" is often used when something is compulsory (like a law) but we can also use it to give some very strong advice to somebody. We are saying something very important to them and we want them to listen and follow our advice. "have to" is stronger than "should"

    Mr andrew. Well.I know that would and could used for polite request or permission but I get confused as the model verbs like might, could , would are in the past form but they often used to express present or future example: I would like..., he might be at home, it might rain later, we could do that by this afternoon. Could you help me, please?
