I have the 887, but my fav is still the old brushed 885... I just did about 100 sq foot of deck repair, had some help so we traded off both the 887 and 885 and agreed we preferred the old brushed version. I do love the controllable variable speed on the old 885.
I snatched the 840 kit up already, it's a beast!! I'm glad Dewalt kept this quiet, so everyone ran out of got the 850, while this kit was just chilling at Lowes!!! Thanks for the test
It’s like a 10 year old DCF815 12 volt I have.Minus the beans 311 in lb torque,650 nut break away.lol Don’t laugh it’s been a great tool.Batteries still good too !
Cheaper and lighter means unhealthy plastic. Check out the cancer warning on it. You HAVE to wear a proper respirator and thick gloves when operating these cheap plastic power tools or you will 100% get cancer and die. Ask me how I know.
@Eli Fire. Source material please. Also the 840 impact actually seems to have more metal on its motor housing then any of the other dewalt offerings so even if your assumption had some truth to it which im scheptical of the 840 would actually seem to be the best choice seeing as its if the smallest of the impacts meaning less plastic and it also has more metal on its housing then other offerings. And finally I wouldnt consider any Dewalt brand impact to be a cheap plastic impact. Maybe your referring to non brand cheap Chinese knockoffs or something.
I actually bought the atomic driver today on my lunch break because it's more shorter and i don't regret it. Been testing it out all afternoon in my garage and love it.
I saw this yesterday, ran as fast as I could to Lowe's this morning. I had been looking for the 850, couldn't find one anywhere. They had some of these 840 kits, tried it out this afternoon,, wow!! What an animal!! Anyone looking for an impact driver that will do the job, this is the one! Thanks for the heads up!!
Agreed. Haven't been in the market for a driver for decades (not a contractor) and been using a cheapy Ryobi. Man I have missed out! I went to help out a local school tear down some desk to donate. Needed a driver to remove decades old set screws. I was blown away by the Dewalts some of the teachers had. So I went out and got the 850 and got an extra battery at Home Depot all for 149.
My take after using the 850 a couple days now. The “soft start” or whatever kicks in and it takes a little bit to come into the power. I ran a few 3 1/2” framing screws into a triple 2x4 and drove right through the first one. It definitely gets hot quicker. I’m still not sure if I like it more or not.
Thank You for telling me about the 840! I don't feel bad for not getting the 850 impact driver at Home Depot now. I replaced my 887 with the 840. The 840 is better in many ways to the 887 impact driver.
Vince dont let these newbies to the channel dictate how you do your show. You guys have always counted your own starts and we've never had a problem with it.
I ran a test between the 887 and the 850 and realized that both running on 6 Amp XR batteries were almost identical in strength but I believe that the 887 was more powerful in the highest third position while the 850 was more powerful in the second position but like many viewers have mentioned the 850 gets real hot real quick and the 887 was cool as can be so in my opinion the 887 is still at the top of the mountain. DEWALT needs to Release a new updated more powerful version of the 887. I believe they will soon.
Ouch that’s a bummer, was really hoping to get one.. if it gets hot that is no good for the bearings , electronics etc.. being atomic it’s going to be more budget friendly , aimed at light duty use. The build quality isn’t as good as XR
@@smokefentanyl I have both and have put the 850 thru hell the last few months. Been running great. I got it release week. Huge DeWalt fan. The 850 is by far my favorite tool. The 887 can't torque quite as big of a lag in however it does drive faster on speed 3 than the 850. The 850 is a monster on speed 2. Just not as quick. But can drive 6" 1/2" lags down to the bone without much slowing down at all
I’ve been using and abusing and occasionally, accidentally dropping my 887 from 8’ and 10’ ladders for at least 10 years now and It still runs like a beast on steroids compared to all other Dewalt impact drivers including other 887s. That thing was built for war and every single person in the sheetmetal industry who has used it has been impressed with its performance. I took your advice and I bought a DCF887B. It has been discontinued and is getting hard to find. I liked it so much I bought 2 more !!!! I am very demanding and I expect a lot from my tools. I run 3 Stihl chainsaws back to back like an Iron-man Competition and I do the same thing with impacts. I have one ready as soon as the battery dies and then grab the next one. The 887 stands the test. I installed over 300 feet of 6 foot wooden privacy fence with screws and the 887 made it a pleasure. ONE TOUGH TOOL !!!!
The DCF 840 is basically just the 12 volt Extreme but in 20 volts with no settings and a few hundred more rpms. I'm just confused why they didn't release it last year to go up against the 20 volt Atomic last year. Or perhaps more confusing, why did Dewalt make the crappy Atomic from last year when they had this new Atomic, that is actually really powerful and compact.
That 840 might just be the perfect deckmaster for homeowners. If it charges a battery as fast as the other one discharges in use, the amp-hour doesn't really matter. Amazing price, and pretty smart way of Dewalt to grab customers into their line.
Amp hour does matter. Several channels have shown that the larger amp hours will push the drivers faster. If you notice to make the test fair, the 2amh battery provided for the 840 was swapped for the same on the 850.
@@VCGConstruction so this means that this impact if replacing the older 20v lineup, so technically we should see a new XR model soon that beats both of these, right ? (Asking since I want to buy a new impact but I want to buy the 887 xr replacement one!

I bought a Dewalt 12v impact/drill combo recently, and the driver also has rattling noise. The one on display at the store didn't have that issue. I think it's really bad quality control, and perhaps, that's how Dewalt can beat the other brands on pricing/special deals/BOGO deals. You get what you pay for i guess.

I've got a buddy that bought the 850 and drill in a combo kit with 2, 1.7Ah batteries and a charger. Ok, so here’s what I think it’s happening. We’ve always had three brushless impact drivers from Dewalt. The top of the line dcf887 xr. The atomic sub compact economy dcf809 atomic. For Home Depot And the economy brushless barebones dcf787 for Lowe’s. So the dcf850 replaced the 809 for the atomic line up. And it slightly out performs the old 887. And the dcf840, for Lowe’s replaced the dcf787 for the Lowe’s alternative to the atomic as their economy line up. What does this mean to me? It’s a sneak peak of what’s to come. There’s an 887 replacement coming soon. Perhaps bundled with the new power stack battery. And it’s going to be an absolute beast. Dethroning the Flex and Milwaukee fuel impact drivers by a wide margin.
It’s to bad Nick thinks he’s too cool to hang out with the Very Cool Gang anymore or run the Dewalt for a TTR! Thanks Vince and Jimmy for always making time to run the newest tools for us
This is the first comparison video I have seen your channel do. I think you guys did a great job. I also liked how you switched operators often to give the tools the best benefit. Keep up the good work! Also really like the impact. Seems different but a great offering from dewalt.
I just picked up the 840 with the 1/2in hammer 778 with 2 power stack batteries bag and charger for 199.00 I couldn't believe it after watching this video I jumped all over it thanks guys
Is spend the extra and get PowerStack, you can use that battery on a wider variety off tools. Even circular saws and recip saws. That 1.3 is only good for drivers and flashlights in my opinion. You’ll never reach full power potential on the 840 with the 1.3 batteries
I bought the Dcf787C2 for 100 bucks at Amazon comes with 2 1.5amp battery’s charger not sure if it seems better cause I bought the craftsman impact and the dewalt I’m using for commercial hvac
Try the DCF840C2 with the new powerstack battery, and I bet you will see crazy power increase. and cost blown out to 169.00 for the package you show of the DCF840C2
I think this has to do with the fact that this is sold at Lowe’s and the fact that it has no speed selector scares off your average joe. Home Depot has spoiled their consumers with their gimmicks. Edit: another neat detail, 840 is more subcompact than most brands out there including the new Makita subcompact impact driver that is going on sale for 99 w/ 1 battery. No point in running 840 against the subcompacts because it’s going to blow them out of the water.
Is this a Lowe’s exclusive? Maybe they threw it together using inexpensive parts for the Black Friday sales. It seems like a good tool to get people into the Dewalt ecosystem.
@@engineer_alv it looks the same as the dcf809, same specs too it looks. What's the difference and why does everyone say the 840 is better. Only thing I notice is that it's Lowes exclusive while the 809 is from home Depot, same price too. Looks the same, what gives?
@@somesauce I believe the DCF809 has 1700 in-lbs while the DCF787 and the Craftsman got 1500. Although the DCF840 has 1700 too it's got 4000 IPM which gives it an edge over every other Dewalt impact when it comes to speed
I wonder how the power stack battery will hold up to constant use. Like how do they perform in high temperatures cuz they are are lipo batteries. Or how safe are they when charging? If you have any RC cars u will know that lipos can blow up when charged improperly
To me, this dcf840 is the successor to the tried and true dcf885. Single speed variable trigger. I'm still rocking the Mexican 885 from my first DeWalt combo. Never disappointed in it (I'm not a contractor). I was tempted by the 850 until I saw this 840. Gonna go to Lowe's today and see if mine has em

I just wanted to say I personally enjoyed the video as always but to be honest ever since I seen the leak pictures of the 850 that's the one I want to add to my collection but don't get me wrong the 840 is still a good option as well
My 850’s didn’t last long on me since they advertise like it would be a nice 887 replacement. I’ll rather keep that atomic 850 at home for light duty jobs
They have that impact paired up with a bag and 1 power stack battery. I took a chance on the hammer drill to try the power stack and for all plastic it's surprised me so far. But I never heard of it before either lol
One month old dcf 850 stopped working today snugging 10 mm antenna mount bolts. Motor still sounds great but the drive doesn’t spin in either forward or reverse
Hi, why does the bit holder swing a lot with the Dewalt DCF887N screwdriver? Do you recommend any model of small Dewalt impact wrench that does not have this defect? Thank you
Me, too. I run my 1.3 ah batteries on lots of my DeWalt tools. I have a 1.7 ah Power Stack but I am not impressed. I have a dad 771, DCS571, DCS391, DCW210 in addition to the 787. They all will run on the 1.3 ah batteries. They may not give blinding speed but they work. Some of my 1.3 ah batteries are ten years old. I got them with my 771 drill in 2014. Go figure.
Man my dcf885 just keeps going and going years of use idk just a diy'er mainly at home stuff. I just want brushless but way things are getting cheaper now drills without the hammer mode wtf
You’re correct. Lowe’s can’t sell the 850 because the Atomic line is Home Depot exclusive. The 840 is styled after the 12v Xtreme, which is the Lowe’s exclusive line.
I like the 850, for its diminutive head length for getting into tight spaces, as I will be building a house very soon! Lowe’s doesn’t have any 840’s available right now, but that might be a good (inexpensive at $99 in kit form!) tool to have as a backup! You might consider testing the 840 against the tried-and-true 887?!? Thanks for the video, brothers!
I wonder if DeWALT is gonna come out with a new XR impact driver, if there is a new Atomic and that new just brushless impact driver, It would make sense to have one even more powerful impact driver and that would be a new XR Impact? That would make sense right?
@@dav1d629 it’s like they are trying very hard to create a new line at Home Depot , while Lowe’s lack of promotion makes it hard for consumers to distinguish what is what.
Less powerful isn't the right word. It doesn't hit as high torque #s as 850 and 887. However it does impact more times per minute which translates to a faster RPM when impacting. For smaller and shorter screws it will dominate but when you start getting into shit like 5+ inch 1/2" lags the 840 will struggle behind Edit: you can see this with the paddle bit test which requires higher torque to maintain rpm
Picked up this exact kit at Lowes on BF. Seen online on different sources that you shouldn’t run higher AH batteries than what was supplied. Seen you had 5 AH in the 840, would running bigger batteries have any negative effect long term? So far loving the 840. I’m just a home DIY’r
I hadnt heard that. Whats the reasoning? If it pulls the same amount of power, 20v @ X amps, more AH would only let it run longer, right? Or is that not how that works?

What does this mean to me? It’s a sneak peak of what’s to come. There’s an 887 replacement coming soon. Perhaps bundled with the new power stack battery. And it’s going to be an absolute beast. Dethroning the Flex and Milwaukee fuel impact drivers by a wide margin.
I'm amazed the screw didn't break at usually happens. Maybe the trick is to not torque so much, but 'hit-it' more.
It’s to bad Nick thinks he’s too cool to hang out with the Very Cool Gang anymore or run the Dewalt for a TTR! Thanks Vince and Jimmy for always making time to run the newest tools for us
I just got the DCF840 but haven’t had an opportunity to play with it yet! Got it “tool only” for $99 at the blue box.
How long ago? The kit is $99 right now, take it back Michael!
@@VCGConstruction Vince, I bought it on Saturday at the $99 price. Thanks 😊
You can get the DCF840 with the bag and charger and a 2.0 battery for $99 or a different kit with (2) 1.3 amp batteries.
This video helped me make my decision. I went with the 840
You guys rule THANKYOU for the comparison
I was using spaddle bits with my impact cutting tile underlay Worked like a charm
is it an imperative that new impact type bits are needed for the 840? Do I throw away my old bits?
The most thing i like about these power tools are the colours.
They look nice.
Going to buy first one soon.
This is the first comparison video I have seen your channel do. I think you guys did a great job. I also liked how you switched operators often to give the tools the best benefit. Keep up the good work!
Also really like the impact. Seems different but a great offering from dewalt.
Yea I have the 1.5 and they run long on my 787 from years ago. All impacts shout have quick insert. Damn 840 is like the new 787. Crazy
Awesome vid but the DCF840 doesn’t have the 3 speed adjuster which I need for my line of work:(
I just picked up the 840 with the 1/2in hammer 778 with 2 power stack batteries bag and charger for 199.00 I couldn't believe it after watching this video I jumped all over it thanks guys
Is it worth getting the DCF840 power stack battery for $169 or the $99 1.3amp Dcf840???
Is spend the extra and get PowerStack, you can use that battery on a wider variety off tools. Even circular saws and recip saws. That 1.3 is only good for drivers and flashlights in my opinion. You’ll never reach full power potential on the 840 with the 1.3 batteries
I love the DCF787 I picked up at Lowe’s last year . One helluva deal
@@MoneyManHolmes yes it is a Lowe’s exclusive
@@engineer_alv it looks the same as the dcf809, same specs too it looks. What's the difference and why does everyone say the 840 is better. Only thing I notice is that it's Lowes exclusive while the 809 is from home Depot, same price too. Looks the same, what gives?
@@somesauce I believe the DCF809 has 1700 in-lbs while the DCF787 and the Craftsman got 1500.
Although the DCF840 has 1700 too it's got 4000 IPM which gives it an edge over every other Dewalt impact when it comes to speed
The makita had the better bit collet. Much more precise without so much end play.
Just bought the dcf840 and dcd777 with 2 batteries, charger and bag for $149 at Lowes.
I wonder how the power stack battery will hold up to constant use. Like how do they perform in high temperatures cuz they are are lipo batteries. Or how safe are they when charging? If you have any RC cars u will know that lipos can blow up when charged improperly
DcF840 kit for 99 bucks is a good deal great informative Video the rattle noise not good @Vcgconstruction
I agree Antonio, thanks!
VCG Construction How is it when compared to Makita XDT131?
I like how you guys pass the tool back and forth to keep it fair
I just picked up a kit at lowes with a 840 plus a drill(don’t know model) with 2 power stack batteries plus a charger for 300$
Hey guys. Great video. Great comparison. I'm a big fan of high power, small package. I work 12hr. days.
Just bought one today thinking it was a compact and finding this video is stopping me from taking it back
Hi there, what's the difference between DCF840C2 and DCF840N-B1 (which is sold here in PH)? Thanks
Hi Vince and Jimmy, excellent demonstration, I recently saw that dcf840 on another video with just details, I like the 850 it’s more compact for me, the 840 is very impressive I like the three speed better on the 850, excellent quality video ty, Bob,
Thx for the testing! TTR review love it 👍
Hammer Drill or impact driver for the house? Which is the best all around for home?
Lowes got it in a 229 kit also with hammer drill and 2 stack batterys
I just wanted to say I personally enjoyed the video as always but to be honest ever since I seen the leak pictures of the 850 that's the one I want to add to my collection but don't get me wrong the 840 is still a good option as well
I’m a newbie, was watching some Milwaukee M18 fuel videos Vince was doing I hit the describe and like the guy pretty awesome.
My 850’s didn’t last long on me since they advertise like it would be a nice 887 replacement. I’ll rather keep that atomic 850 at home for light duty jobs
I am very impressed with single speed DeWalt impacts and I use my 887 everyday. I think my 887 is slowing down finally after two years.
I have the 840 and i love it great tool and price
Great video guys. I love to see new tools. Even though I am on team red I will admit I did buy the dcf850 & the dcf923. Shout out to my boy Nick.
Which of the two uses more energy?
Just picked up a dcf840 and a power stack battery and the bag for 180$ US out the door in Michigan at lowes did I pay too much ?
I just grabbed a week ago the DCF850B for 57.46 was 99 bucks and had 50 Xtra pro dollars I used great video guys @vcgconstruction
Helluva driver vs. price!!
Where the hell was this 2 weeks ago when I spent $199 for a DCF850 kit?
....regardless no regrets. Dewalt is killing it.
Should've done the 850 kit hack by adding a 5ah battery then returning it left kit price at $110
Can't wait to get my hands on those new batteries
Yep, I need a couple batteries, but I’m waiting till December 1.
Go figure.
Thanks for the info Vince
Thanks Mikhail! 👍🏻
great video 1 question, isn't the atomic a DIY tool?
Awsome video vcg, bringin the heat !
That thing is a beast thanks for for the video
Like to see how it does with the Simpson ICF ledger plate self tapping bolts.
Man my dcf885 just keeps going and going years of use idk just a diy'er mainly at home stuff. I just want brushless but way things are getting cheaper now drills without the hammer mode wtf
You guys tested it on wood, I’m a metal framer using heavy gauge studs would you use this tool for the job?
What gets me! The 850 is sold at Home Depot. The 840 impact driver is sold at Lowe's!
I like your videos about impact driver review and comparation
Thanks
i think dewalt made the 840 a “only at lowes” driver i don’t see the 840 sold in home depot and the 850 Lowe’s doesn’t sell it
You’re correct. Lowe’s can’t sell the 850 because the Atomic line is Home Depot exclusive. The 840 is styled after the 12v Xtreme, which is the Lowe’s exclusive line.
You guys should do a bit where you take a certain tool brand on a jobsite and put it to the test. To see if it can pull its weight in the field!
Which one do you recommend less the 887 is a lot of money
This might be close to the Milwaukee in terms of driving in screws
I wonder if DeWALT is gonna come out with a new XR impact driver, if there is a new Atomic and that new just brushless impact driver, It would make sense to have one even more powerful impact driver and that would be a new XR Impact? That would make sense right?
I think….Lowe’s is where is at with the most sub compact Dewalt impact driver done right, not Home Depot.
@@ProxyFinal yeah I think so, Im just waiting for a new XR impact that is a Beast!
@@dav1d629 it’s like they are trying very hard to create a new line at Home Depot , while Lowe’s lack of promotion makes it hard for consumers to distinguish what is what.
@@ProxyFinal Yeah, seems like it
@@dav1d629 me too😎🛠️😎🛠️😎
I picked up the atomic Bare tool and we had the other kit and I was Questioning if that was a good choice but I went with atomic great video👍🤔😎
I love how DeWalt quietly made their most powerful impact driver yet and no one really is talking about it lol(840)
Like Vince said, no fancy name! Everyone is talking about Atomic, Xtreme and Power Stack lol.
Less powerful isn't the right word. It doesn't hit as high torque #s as 850 and 887. However it does impact more times per minute which translates to a faster RPM when impacting. For smaller and shorter screws it will dominate but when you start getting into shit like 5+ inch 1/2" lags the 840 will struggle behind
Edit: you can see this with the paddle bit test which requires higher torque to maintain rpm
It has 11 fewer foot lbs than the 850...it is not more powerful. Its just a little faster.
@@casemods more IPMs though
Picked up this exact kit at Lowes on BF. Seen online on different sources that you shouldn’t run higher AH batteries than what was supplied. Seen you had 5 AH in the 840, would running bigger batteries have any negative effect long term? So far loving the 840. I’m just a home DIY’r
I hadnt heard that. Whats the reasoning? If it pulls the same amount of power, 20v @ X amps, more AH would only let it run longer, right? Or is that not how that works?
I love the "Mayham" would like see flex in the mix!
Just wanted to know is this more powerful the the Atomic from homedepot?
like to know if the third drill feels like it drives the screws by itself or you have to put lots of effort into it? Thanks for your great videos
