Thank you so much sir. This vid and the one on how to remove steering wheel have saved me literally hundreds of dollars. One locksmith charged me $600. After removing steering wheel, locksmith I've known for years wanted $300. And after this vid, I successfully installed new lock cylinder with key. May God bless you and all the great Americans teaching us how to be DIYers. Be well.
Thanks for the informational video on doing it properly... If you manage to weasel the clip out with picks and pushing on the plate because you can't get the special tool... Going back together is easy: Work the clip ring down to the plate (past the clockspring's snap ring groove) until it is touching the plate. Then a 4" long piece of copper pipe placed over the steering shaft will seat the ring with a good (medium hard) tap with a hammer. Check to see that the ring is seated all the way around, if not just push the plate on the side where ring didn't seat and push that side of the clip in with a screwdriver. Now you have a special tool that fits in the toolbox nicely.
Fantastic video! 😃Great camera work. You give a clear and to the point explanation with the exact view we would have. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Times are tough and this helps me out! You rocked it sir!
Thx I'm trying to repair my ignition switch while sitting at McDonald's. Got tools but couldn't remove the outside ring over locking plate! Back to work 😊
My plate is bent from the first time I tried to remove this plate (before I knew about the tool) I figured if I pry on the plate enough, it should come off😵
Any experience changing the Ignition lock? Mine doesn’t need the key it’s so worn out. so I just ordered a new one, but this helped me feel better about digging into the steering column. Thanks for the video
I'm trying to work my way through the whole column in short videos. I do have a video that goes through an older style (pre 84) tilt column. ua-cam.com/video/rbByHMab6AI/v-deo.html
My steering wheel is crooked even though my Pitman arm, wheels and everything else is straight. Can I clock my steering wheel to correct this and do I need to remove the locking plate? Or just remove the wheel?
Depends on how far you need to go. You only have a few splines worth of adjustment at the steering wheel. You won't need to take the lock plate off, just the wheel.
hello is there anyway to rotate that shaft because i’m having trouble i’ve did everything that the video is says because whenever installed the steering wheel did it wrong and now the grooves of the shaft are upside and i was wondering if there is a way to rotate it
My steering wheel moves with key out of ignition cylinder. Removing this plate would cause that correct? I suspect previous owner might’ve removed it if that’s the case.
@@SquarebodyStuff turns out that small gear on the back of the ignition cylinder that goes to the pin was off by several teeth , this caused the lock pin to not engage out all the way in the lock plate.
You ever make a video going deeper ? Need to reconnect my actuator rod to my actuator rack so I can use my key to start my car again normally.. need to get the second cover off that has the key cylinder in it..
Aye men i need to replace the bearing that work with the key ignition but cant remove the plastic around it its a 92 sonoma s10 squarebody lmk how to do it
Can you help me out.2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck . when turning left my steering wheel Lock s up . only when I turn left . and I have to force it straight . and makes a Cracking sound from the steering column . Scary when it happens .it feels like something is binding .any ideas thanks 👍🇨🇦
Do you happen to know where to buy one of those retaining clips on the locking plate? I have been searching all over the internet for one and I still can not find one any help is appreciated
Do you have a video of replacing a turn signal switch? I'm worried I'm going to have to drop my column and messing something up. I'm handy with tools but I've heard some horror stories about the column 🙁

Depends on how far you need to go. You only have a few splines worth of adjustment at the steering wheel. You won't need to take the lock plate off, just the wheel.
Steering wheel position is affected by tiered adjustment , horn cancel piece and index splines on lock plate maintain steering wheel position

The plate will probably still be there, just the lock pin gone.

Not real familiar with the later model columns. Sounds like you're gonna have to tear into it to see what's hanging up.
Thanks 👍
Will it be the same procedure on a 79 k10 4x4?
