I have Gboard on my 6a with GrapheneOS. The app has no permissions allowed, so it cannot possibly send any data, to any server, anywhere. Yet it works great. However, I cannot use the GIF feature as it has no ability to connect to the web and search gif images.
@@heinzkitzvelvet I don't see the point of installing gboard and denying all permissions if you can install an open source keyboard that does not have any permissions except the necessary ones, for example vibration
Can Graphene OS disable cellular connectivity so that your phone won't ping any cellular base station (even without SIM)? If not, are there apps which can do this?
The phone still maintains a connection to the cell tower after the sim is removed and can be tracked via hardware identifiers. Anyone who cares about cellular tower tracking are better off just not having a phone. Put it on airplane mode or turn it off if you are that worried.
The phone might be tracked by hardware identifiers, but it's only dangerous if the hardware is linked to you in a database. Anonymity is the key to winning the cat and mouse game with big tech.
I asked some questions in the GraphneOS Matrix Channel. If I had a second user on my phone, and if this space had Google Play Services installed, would there would be back-and-forth communication for apps with the first space and vice versa. At first, I got multiple responses saying that yes, in fact, this happened. I then kept asking and got this, whatever it means: ( If app A in the first profile has a server that can be accessed via localhost, then app B in the second profile can access that server, and vice versa (if they both have network permission). Does this mean that apps in the second user account not work profile can read the apps and other settings on the first user account that does not have gplay installed? I am confused. Can you help clear this up please.
No. Sandboxed gplay apps can't read anything in the first, unless an app in the first profile has a server installed that allows access to it from the network. So, could there be an app that allows access to other apps? Probably. Is it likely? I don't think so.
I am trying to find an alternative to GBoard, I need the microphone for talk to text and the app I have, the microphone doesn't work, is there another app I need?
@@privacyproshop thank you, what about when the phone is in use , ? I use orbot on android and run all my apps through the vpn mode. I used to run nord vpn , but nord only runs downloaded apps through and not system apps, so there are still vulnerabilities. Im Non techy
I have not tried CalyxOS. Seems fairly similar to GrapheneOS, but supports some Google services through MicroG, which is an open-source implementation of Google Play Services. GrapheneOS supports native play services in a "sandbox" if you need them.
For GPS on Graphene, you should tether you old android phone to the Graphene OS phone then start the GPS app on your old phone. You didn't address the case where you are installing Graphene on a pixel phone that already has a phone number...which is what I'm about to do. Wanted to hear what you had to say, but you missed my case completely.😢😮
I don't understand the purpose of GPS tether, and how it would work, and why. Best is to get a new phone, as the old phone hardware is registered with Google and associated with your account.
I just installed Graphene OS, when I reboot, I get the screen saying “this phone will load an alternative operating system” and have the side button. Its the same screen where I changed/unlocked the bootloader or actually installed Grapheme. Is this normal?
What do you do with family and friends who still have iPhones when you need to text them and they don’t want to install a privacy texting app like Signal?Do you just cut them off? Or use less secure and less private SMS, losing the security of iMessage?
Tough choices... You could get Voip.ms service and use that for SMS messaging. Of course, it is still insecure and tracked, but at least it isn't tied to your GrapheneOS phone's location and it's number. Also, limit what you say over SMS as that's pretty much a permanent record. Apple's iMessage is secure, but not privacy friendly. It's worse than using SMS in my opinion.
@@privacyproshop thanks for the reply, much appreciated. so, whats the best "safe" phone? I used sailfish and ubuntu touch before.....didnt like them too much....
If you want modern functionality, GrapheneOS is it, but again, who knows if there is something lurking in hardware. PinePhone should be safe, but lacks modern conveniences.

Thanks for the content. As for the keyboard, you need to install a keyboard without a keylogger that sends everything you type to some servers.
Very true. You could also block all network traffic by the app.

By buying a Pixel phone are you not still funding Google? It bugs me GrapheneOS based development to the Pixel line of phones and not other brands.
That has to do with Google's commitment to security. Graphene is firstly a highly secure OS, and secondarily a privacy OS.

If you put it in airplane mode it should disable the cellular radio as far as I understand.
