Asphalt Millings - How much Damage does Snowplowing Cause?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- Well, the snow is finally gone and I a lot of people have been asking how my asphalt millings driveway has held up this winter to the snow removal. I am super happy with the results! I had virtually no damage from the snow removal all winter. That being said I do plow the driveway myself so I take a little more care in not messing it up. I also am sure to keep the cutting edge of my snow pusher above the surface of the driveway so I'm not digging in.

Wow, that's impressive. I've got a driveway at one of my properties here in SC that we just put down millings and rolled it. It's all loose but doesn't really go anywhere. Some people say to spray with diesel on a hot day and roll it to achieve what you've done, but I've never personally seen it.
I regret doing it all together. its always soft no matter how much you seal it . Kids can't drive rollerblades or bicycles
I know plenty of people with millings for driveways and knew going into it, that it wouldn’t be like topcoat asphalt. You’re right though, for the uninformed, it will never be a perfect surface such as blacktop
Overall looks pretty good! I’d be curious if a guy could put a LOT more sealer on. Maybe multiple coats and or brush it all on thick like they did the edges. If you bought it by the drum maybe it’d be cheaper.
I can’t imagine a scenario where more would be worse…
Elliot do you think if I put this inside of my enclosed lean to activated it with calcium and vibrate rolled it plate tamp around the edges. Then wait for the calcium to dissipate then Sealcoat I could roll a creeper and MIG welder cart around on it? It being inside it would be more protected from the weather and the Sun I just don't want to pour concrete yet because I'm going to tear it off in 3 years and build a shop with a concrete floor there.
I'm not sure about the calcium...however I know that diesel fuel applied with a weed sprayer and rolling would work very well. However, I can not recommend that to you given the potential environmental impact, do it at your own risk/reward
I bet if you swept the loose stuff off the top then sealed it by hand and just broomed or squeegeed it on it'd come out awesome.
I’ve honestly considered that. Everywhere I look there’s just about 1/2” of loose gravel but under that is rock solid
@@EverythingElliott I've had ours surfaced with millings for about 6 years now..I keep widening it and now I'm going to resurface it again hopefully for the last time for at least awhile so I was searching UA-cam for ideas on if seal coating is worth it. I think it is but I feel I'd be better off letting it all sit for at least a year then sweeping it off and sealing the base. Cause everytime I've added more millings then after about a year or two it gets that rock hard base even without the sealer. Thanks for posting these videos cause it's helping me get ideas lol
@@ryanlagoda1352 glad they help!
Please can I ask what was used to seel it?
I’m not sure, sorry. I paid a company to seal it
@@EverythingElliottcan you ask them?
@@georgea6403 It was almost 2 years ago, I dont remember the name of the company that did it, so I wouldn't be able to contact them
Better off having tar put down on top so it’ll essentially be tar and gravel
That's a great idea...were way past that point now. Thanks for the tip!
So when you plow do you leave it raised a bit or drop it all the way down?
I leave the plow shoes down a little so the cutting edge is about 1/2” off the geound
So I just found your channel. Do you think the seal coating helped bind it together?
I believe it did, that being said, I don’t have a second driveway without seal coating on it to compare to.
thanks for sharing. I just put down about 9000 sq ft of Recycled Asphalt.Looks great. Do you know what kind of Sealer your contractor used? I am considering a sealant the the advice is to us a Recycled Asphalt Rejuvenator from Asphalt Kingdom. Thoughts or let us know who your contractor is to contact. Also what was the length of time from when you had installed and sprayed to showing this video? how many months? thanks so much!
I’m not sure of the type of sealant, sorry. And the time was about 10 months
Completely just got ripped off on my driveway in the last month! Just under 4,500 sq. ft. & the man took me for $6,000.00 for just millings 2-3@ deep.. rolled out & misted my driveway with something that did NOTHING. .. Was literally down on one foot washing my wife’s explorer ST, twisted my foot & huge hole emerged under my foot😡 with the added grass growing up thru. everywhere!
After countless hrs. of research, I have found that Hawk Seale indeed makes a WONDERFUL product!
Not sponsored in any way just lending a helping hand is all😁
@@smigletat9634 That sucks man
What was the cost?
Oh the driveway? I think it was $5500 but that included a lot more than just putting the millings down
just to be clear recycled asphalt and re used millings are not the same thing! recycled asphalt is millings that have been ground down, heated and then a binder added again so its pretty much just like hot roll brand new asphalt, millings are just resued asphalt thats been ground down some what then laid down,it will bind to a certain degree but not consistant
I suppose you learn something new every day! Thanks!
Hammond indiana I put asphalt millings on my yard but inspector wants me to get an environmental impact study to test the millings are safe. Anyone had idea if millings are dangerous or I have a inspector that is just talk bs.
They aren’t any more dangerous than they are on the road leading up to your driveway. Unless he’s not concerned about the millings as much as he is if you live in a federally protected wetland
how much did they charge you to install that. do you remember the dimensions of the driveway?
It was around $6000 for a driveway dig out, and laying the new driveway, sorry I don’t recall the sqft. Would have been less than half of that if I didn’t have them dig out my old gravel driveway.
What sealant did you use?
Not sure, I hired a company to do it. Sorry I couldn’t help.
What kind/grade of bitumen did you use for sealing your gravel? Did you apply it hot or cold?
Not too sure on the first part of that question, but I can tell you they applied it cold
I hired a company to do it…
