    I just found your channel, I just watched almost all the M1A videos. That’s some great shooting. I need my M1A standard to shoot like that. Also what model Vortex scope are you using. Thanks

      Hi Andre; Glad you found my channel. Better late than never I suppose and thanks. If I remember correctly it's a Vortex Diamondback 6x18x 50 I think. It's not the more expensive Vortex Viper scopes but it still seem to work pretty well, right?

      Hi Frog: Thanks for watching, thanks for commenting. In all honesty the spectrum of accuracy for the M1A varies greatly depending on the particular build, the ammo. the shooter, etc.
      So you might find this interesting. I bought this back in the early 90's as a standard M1A. Almost immediately I sent it back to Springfield to have them make it a NM rifle. And they did a beautiful job. The bedding of the stock is a work of art. After that work it was a laser like you see in this video. However over the years I shot the living crap out of it. No doubt thousands of rounds. Until there was basically no throat left in the Springfield barrel. I always wanted to learn how to rebuild M1A's. So I broke my cherry on this one. I rebuilt it with a Criterion NM SS 1/10 twist 22" barrel. I learned a lot. There was some growing pains as I got it all dialed in. So when it shot this group I was floored. I've done a few of these things now.
      If you want to see the jobs I did you can go to my channel and plug-in M1A in the search and you can see as I pretty much documented the process. Ok I'm out. God bless

    I know I'm incredibly late to the party... Like 2 years... But i was curious which brass/primer you're loading with the 175's and 4895?
    Edit: Guess I should have watched the entire video before asking... Looks like LC brass and BR2 primers. I am assuming these were all LC brass then?

      Hi jack; Better late than never, right? I'm not to picky about brass as long as they are matched as far as brand. I think how the brass is prepped is the most important. And I prefer either BR or mag primers and those preferably being CCI. But my stock of primers is dwindling. Thanks watching and commenting.

    I've had my preban m1a for over a decade. All usgi. It's my favorite rifle. It has dropped whitetail all over Texas and Arkansas. I decided to take it elk hunting this year. I gotta shrink those groups down a bit without adding a lot of weight. I'm adding a sadlak spring guide and piston, shimming the gas system, switching over to a fiberglass stock, and switching from a rds to a magnified Optic. I don't think I'll mess with the trigger, as it already breaks like glass. I'll probably skip bedding if I can get 1-1.5 moa.

      Hi Bthorn: Nice job. M1A's are a special breed, IMHO. However, it is a bit of a trick to get them to shoot MOA as they can be a bit finicky. Glass bedding an M1A the conventional way is a bit of a mess and it can be messed-up. So I came up with a different way to do that you might find interesting. Perhaps it might be something worth considering. Here's the link.

      @lencac That's a neat trick! Question, is bedding or stock shimming only applicable is the stock fit is worn and sloppy?

    • @lencac7952
      @lencac7952  Рік тому

      @@bthorn5035 Hey Bthorn: Good question. Here's my observations. As far as the composite stocks that came from Springfield Armory, they are terribly loose fit. I have 4 of them and each if it was not for the trigger assembly holding the barreled receiver in the stock the thing would literally fall out of its own weight. I think most all walnut stocks could benefit from having the lateral support tightened-up. I think the shim method of doing that is easy and holds virtually no chance of damaging the stock. These Archangel stocks are very tight laterally but they have their own set of issues that should be addressed. They are not as "drop-in" as the manufacturer would lead you to believe. The other two things that need attention are the clamping force of the trigger assembly and making sure the stock in front of the receiver does not interfere with op-rod, op-rod guide and gas cylinder. As long as you're hanging in there with me here's another link that may give you some further insight as to the overall function.

      @lencac That clears up a lot about stock fit and alignment. I especially liked the part about receiver lugs needing to fit, both laterally and rearward. Good idea to address the front of the stock to slide the action back. Do you have a source for the shimming material you used in the earlier video?

    • @lencac7952
      @lencac7952  Рік тому +1

      @@bthorn5035 Well, the brass shim stock I got from my local hardware store. They had to order it with a supplier they use. Can't remember who that was but later today perhaps I'll see if I can go by the HW store and get the company name for you. You know something I did find interesting is that as you saw the Archangel stock needed some work to get the recoil lugs to match up with the stock. However, when I built the M1 Jungle carbine that old Vietnam era walnut stock, although that receiver and stock had never been put together before, in spite of the lateral looseness, when I did the recoil lugs in the receiver mated-up perfectly with the corresponding spot on the stock liner.

    Hey Len, I just found your channel and have a question on the M1A, Does it make a big difference on buying the "Loaded" M1A or can I start with the standard M1A for accuracy?? Thanks, Greg

    • @lencac7952
      @lencac7952  Рік тому

      Hi G: When you get a loaded you get NM sights, NM Barrel, NM trigger. Standard stock, no bedding. I think a person could get one and make sure it's all dialed and it would be very accurate. So yeah, I think the extra for a loaded is worth it.

    What cheek riser are you using on your m1a? Also what height are your scope rings for it?

    • @lencac7952
      @lencac7952  2 роки тому +1

      HI AT: The cheek riser was a Springfield Armory thing. But I just looked on their web site store and I did not see one. But I got mine many years ago.
      As for the rings. Any mount that fits an M1A will place scope pretty high. So as a general rule I think you'd be safe to get the lowest rings your scope will accommodate.

    • @packletackle9047
      @packletackle9047 2 роки тому

      @@lencac7952 dang it's a shame they don't have it anymore, it seems like a quality piece. Also I was asking about the rings because I got an m1a with the aluminum springfield mount . I'm about to get a leupold mark 5 with a 56mm lense and wanted to know if it fits with low rings. But looking into it more apparently leupold doesn't make a 35mm low ring so I got my answer. Thanks for the response!

    • @lencac7952
      @lencac7952  2 роки тому

      @@packletackle9047Yep, that cheek riser is the bomb. It will fit most any rifle with a full butt stock. It came with 3 different height cheek pieces that fit into the girdle. It's soft too so it's very comfortable. However, I would do what ever you need to do to get the scope as low as possible. I have the same mount on mine. Here's a link to an old YT vid I did when I had the 56mm objective lens Springfield scope on it. The rings there are pretty low and you can still see how much clearance there is still to the handguard.
      ua-cam.com/video/Pm9JguDdQ_E/v-deo.html
      Then as to mounting Springfield of the Springfield mount. It's weak point is the dovetail insert. First it only goes in from one direction. Don't knew if you knew that. Next you must make sure the insert is absolutely made one with the receiver. When I got mine, many years ago the only thing that held it in place was the spring roll-pin that gets knocked out when you remove the original insert. It took much time and frustration to figure that out. So what I did with mine was I drilled and tapped the new insert so I could lock it in place with 2 set-screws. Plus because I was using low rings and the 56mm I had to shorten the front of the mount so it would clear the front bell of the scope so I could get the eye-relief I wanted. Keep in mind also with the big 56mm you won't be able to see the iron sights if needed. Unless you mount the scope ridiculously high. When I put the Arken Optics scope on mine with 34mm tube and 50mm objective it was a huge improvement plus I can see the iron sights. Here's a link to Midway for rings.
      www.midwayusa.com/product/1086981545128?pid=691856
      Trust me, make every effort to keep the scope as low as possible. It will greatly increase the overall enjoyment of the thing. And having a level on the thing is a must have also. Oh, and one more thing. You need to make sure the horizontal and vertical slots on the left side of the receiver where the thumb screw goes. Those slots need to be mated to the corresponding notches on the mount. I had to do a little refined filing on my mount to get a perfect match.

    Going to break an op rod using those heavy bullets

    • @lencac7952
      @lencac7952  2 роки тому

      Well, 25 years and thousands of rounds, to the point of wearing out the original barrel without any type of problems with op-rod or anything else would suggest that your "theory" about damaging the op-rod might be a tiny bit suspect. Don't you think? Besides 175 gr. match rds. is standard fair. As a matter of fact the 175gr. match bullet is what the national match M1A was always intended to shoot. Nevertheless, I do very much appreciate your concern and making comment to that effect. Thanks.
