      Exactly!
      I buy and grade games I like for myself, they're not for resale or seen as an investment.
      Example: Was able to secure a physical copy of metroid prime remastered for switch.
      The copy was flawless so I sent it off to Wata for grading and even paid for the deep badge.
      This game is basically worthless from an investment prospective, however Metroid Prime was the reason I bought a game cube back in the day so the game itself for me is worth the price to grade and preserve.
      Its nostalgic nothing more.
      Great comment!👌🏽

    Makes perfect sense in my opinion. Like Beanie Babies, the more collected something is immediately when it releases, the less collectible it is likely to eventually become. The most collectible things are usually the things that nobody thought to collect in the first place.

    With increasing digital sales i think the market for currently modern games will be great down the road when people who went the digital route realise they would like to have something real/physical from their past to collect. Digital sales are currently over 50% of all sales and growing which makes physical copies more and more rare

    • @GetTheGreg
      @GetTheGreg  3 роки тому +5

      And that is a valid argument. But that is a rather "unknown" area of *if* that will be the actual way that demand goes. Couldn't it be just as easily argued that due to the increased digital sales, this generation won't hold the same nostalgic feelings of owning physical that the prior generations do?

    • @philmc2224
      @philmc2224 3 роки тому

      @@GetTheGreg It could also be argued that a volcano will erupt blocking out the sun sending us back into another ice age making all of this redundant. Hopefully that doesnt happen. Until it does i will bet on human nature. Human beings become nostalgic for their childhood and im betting many of these current kids will grow up and their pockets will grow with them. When they see a sealed copy of Fortnite (a game that is 99% digital) in 20 years i think that nostalgia might just get the better of them. But ya..who knows. Great videos by the way, i learn a lot watching them.

      It really can play out either way. What I will say though, if you feel confident in your assessment, take your shot on it. Better to go with your own gut and see how it all plays out!
      Edit: Fortnite is definitely an example of a game that will likely always remain valuable (PS4 version) and become a bit of a grail into the future. Minecraft 360 is already showing that trend.

The vast majority are digital or using game cases and discs as coasters and not even thinking twice about it. I do agree with you. I think that there will be some modern era games from now that will have potential collectability and selling for a profit in the future. For the most part, most modern era games will not have as much value because they made many more copies than a lot of distributers did before the 2000s. The more durable type of packaging and having less stuff included with a game nowadays will decrease the value. Most people a long time ago didn't see video games the way people do now. People yapping about types of factory seals, cracks or scratches on the case, partially factory tears, etc. I never thought that a market for this sort of thing was going to exist but it will be hear to stay.

  • @MilkWasABadChoice17
    @MilkWasABadChoice17 3 роки тому +1

    I agree with basically all modern retail games, they're printed in mass and too many will be in premium condition. There's a big caveat with modern, we have a huge amount of limited print companies only supplying a few thousand copies of games. We have not seen that type of supply constraint before. Now will the demand for those games be high in the future? That part is questionable, but the way we're seeing market manipulation with vintage games today, I can 100% seeing it be way worse with limited print games in the future. I can also see these games going up in demand if and when game companies like Nintendo and Sony decide to go all digital.

    There still is opportunity in modern tho. But yes, you’re right, it will start to look more and more like Pokémon cards - for example, we’ll start to see the chunky premiums only on Gem Mint copies … which in vintage are basically non-existent. It’ll be interesting to inspect the pop reports to see how many Gem Mint copies of modern games have already been graded.

    I can understand this logic but I remember people telling me the same about the gamecube era and you could buy for ex fire emblem for 5 dollar or skies of arcadia for 5 dollar sealed. which people didnt even pick up then. And now sells for 300-500. Might not sound much, but that paid your "switch" or you can trade those rare sealed with another collector in the future.
    I think big franchises will always be worth something (people always want the games for a certain franchises) - especially if game X for it sold less.
    So do I think a sealed Mario Kart 8 deluxe that sold 30 million will be ever worth anything? no. But im sure you can get 2-3x back in 10+ years.
    And so while I wouldnt invest into that, I can see for ex how a Xenoblade 2 might climb in value in 10-15 years (SEALED) jrpgs from series people are in love with, much like fire emblem.
    Pokemon? no, it sold 20 million copies on the switch and knowing what pokemon games sealed sell for today? ofc people will have them "saved". I know for ex a guy who traded 14 zelda 64 cartridges which he bought on sales and flea markets here in Sweden and if I remember right 4 diddy kong racing. He traded them all in for a Final Fantasy 6 sealed in 2012. That game is now worth 5000 dollar+ You can always make good trade deals if you think out of the box, even with a lot of "sealed games" in the future, for retro stores etc.

    Hello I just had a question. What’s your opinion on the call of duty black ops 3 juggernog edition.? Do you think it’ll be worth a lot more than it is now in the future? It was $200 retail when it came out. And the mini fridge alone is worth around $500 now. Sealed ones sell for $1000. I feel like it will but then again it’s a reskinned poorly working mini fridge I can’t imagine people buying them $2000-$3000 brand new sealed 10-15 years from now.

    It really depends. Buying new gen sealed games and keeping them sealed is not a great risk if you pay way less than the MSRP. For instance black Friday 2022 breath of the wild was 29.99. Buying an extra copy to keep it sealed for that price makes sense to me. There is no way three years from now a sealed copy of this game will sell for less than this amount. Most of the Wii u sealed games are already up to their new MSRP price...

    My only problem with this video is that you didn't define "Modern". You mainly compared cardboard collecting to diamond case and DVD case collecting.
    You even brought up PS1 and Saturn games that have cases that can get cracked and replaced. But that are in the same era as N64.
    That being said, I completely agree with this when it comes to 7th/8th/9th gen collecting. These generation are saturated with games put out by Limited Run and the likes for intentional low print runs and "collector's editions". Very few games retain or go up in value because of easy of access though digital download, GOTY Editions, and other factors.
    At the same time, 3/DS collecting is now a huge pain due to GameStop throwing away cases and manuals. It's almost equally as hard to find a CIB 3/DS game as it is a cardboard era game.

      @@GetTheGreg My main point is that your video is about Modern, but most of what you talk about is cardboard vs. DVD/Diamond case.
      It's basically your whole 1st point and a bit of the 2nd. And I get it, people think me having even a scuffed Super Mario RPG box is cool.
      I just think that it would have been better to focus more on the vast amount of speculation and dilution of the market for more recent consoles. Hell, there's plenty to talk about right there. If you wanted to talk about why you also don't collect games in DVD cases like Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, ect, leave that for another video.
      So again, I don't disagree with any of it. I just think one doesn't really have anything to do with the other and both could be expanded on to make your point clear. Because I would have liked to know what makes a sub-90 sealed DVD cased game and if it's just cardboard games that are a premium or if it's just Nintendo cardboard games.

    Older games will always be king like comics and cards, they're hard to find in good condition and supply was just so much lower than the commercial society we live in. However it's worth considering that the current generations don't necessarily feel a strong connection to NES games etc. They have the nostalgia for newer systems. Xbox 360 and PS3 will be to this generation what playstation and GBA are to me. Everyone starts collecting what they know and what they like. There will always be value in grading high quality video games. I just think that the margins of increase on average will be much lower. You are right when you say that newer console games are easier to find sealed because of plastic cases etc. Another thing to consider now though is there are many companies producing low price runs of games, even though they might not be as sought after, certainly the supply is lower. Gaming preservation is becoming more of a hot topic as of late (especially with PS3 marketplace being shutdown). I think this will also drive interest and collectability of newer generations. You didn't have to worry about Mario 3 being gone one day off of the "internet marketplace". Great video as always Greg!

      I agree with everything you said. That really is the opposite side of my argument - or at least a great "unknown" factor. Will the demand for sealed games be as strong by today's youth as it was for generations prior, will they be interested in going backwards to collect the origins of many of these characters, will the organic demand outweigh the inorganic supply from current speculation? Those are all really huge unknowns haha - everything can make their best assumption but it's hard to say with 100% certainty.
      I am never great at speculating on future demand which is why I try to stick to smaller supply sides haha. At least then I know I only need small market demand in order for the price to sustain itself!

    The big scare for this market going forward, is that kids, who have their formative years as gamers today, are (for the most part) just dealing in digital downloads. They simply do not put actual copies of games on the pedestal, like older gamers do. Hell, even I (at the ripe, old age of 37) appreciate the convenience of simply downloading something and having it good to go in a heartbeat.
    Considering the embrace of more minimalism, that is running strong these days, and a lack of nostalgia for standing before a store shelf and browsing through games, I just cannot see this alleged future run on copies of games, which most of these gamers will have readily available in their digital libraries anyway.
    Add to that the contrived future availability of factory sealed games and any of the guys, who are leaping into this fad, with shoes and socks, WILL be in for a rude awakening. The candle is burning from both ends.

      There will be dips and 💯 NES cardboard is the way to go I just have always seen the potential for video games to be this generations comics it's just hard to pick the winners and losers which is another reason to just buy early NES if nothing else but for the intellectual property attached to it ie) the first appearance of Link or wario idk Kirby

Which means they have no genuine interest in the underlying item. They just want to get money for free. And if too many people do that, you have a seller market in disguise. I also didn't pay to get it graded. Do you think its a good grade. And you're honest opinion on getting it graded. I couldn't find this game anywhere new. So I thought it was a good price. I'm just being as honest as I can about it. You could (probably) still get all of your money back if you went to sell it, but that's about it. With Switch games, you really want 9.6 A+ minimum grade.

      Honestly I thought it was going to be graded lower. A friend of mine works for GameStop he looked at it and said it looks like a manufacturing defect. So I was expecting an 8.5 A++ because the seal looked crisp. But remember I have a total of $70 into the game. I didn't pay for shipping nore the grading . So at worst I can definitely make a little more then my $70s . But honestly I won't sell it. I liked the simple fact I found it in the wild. I also got a 9.8 A+ Of Lollipop Chainsaw for the Xbox 360 . I know that's not a high value game but it's one of my favorite Xbox 360 games. I also have a copy of NeverDead for the 360 I'm thinking of getting graded . And don't worry I didn't take any offense to your comment lol. Just a little. Lol no I'm kidding. Valid point.
    There are 2 things people should know about modern games. Collecting sealed modern games are totally useless.
    1. From 7th gen and up, all games required patches. They need to connect to the internet to upgrade themself. This also require the server needs to be up and running. Let say you go to an area with no internet connection and play the game as is. It's like playing a beta version.
    2. Day one purchases with DLC. DLC has expiration date. I bought God of War Ascension Day one with DLC. 1.5 year later, I opened it up and try to installed the code. It's expired and wouldn't registered.
    If it's me, I would understand from PS2 era and before because those games do not have internet access and come as is with almost less bugs. Modern video games are as buggy as hell without the internet.

There's a few other titles in a cases, but mostly the cardboard box games, and boxed amiibo games that'll garner some value. Hell they already are. And why? Because the amazon new old stock resellers have run out of those, and the boxes easily get ruined. But anybody buying sealed ports, or sealed mario karts, are probably not going to get the return they want five years from now. I know that game has a huge following and should at the very least hold value in sealed condition.

    ps4 and ps5 horror titles in limited print with ALL you need to enjoy the game ON DISC would be an exception. Same with RPG's and shooters. Take it from someone who has been in the game 45 years....yes I collected 2600 games as a little boy lol

    I currently have 5 Wata graded Wii games, and 2 more at Wata now, Is that modern? I've always speculated the Wii and tried to buy all the "rarer" games in the library for my personal collection, within that was some sealed games that I had graded.

    So many "collectors" are flooding the market right now, that it seems like a good time to unload a bunch of this stuff and only keep what I find irreplaceable. Like a gift from mom, or something I have memories of an exact time and place when I played it. To be perfectly honest I rarely find myself going back to play anything retro. If you want to try it out for a time you have the ability to on Switch/PS Premium or even emulation vs forking out a ton of money. Also doesn't include remasters and remakes. While some lose things (like ost music), others gain quality of life. Its hard to say, but I think if you gave a little kid RE2 on PS5 and then asked him to try RE2 on PS1, they would question how anyone would love the PS1 version. They didn't grow up with it, so no nostalgia ties to it. By the time that kid gets older, 10 years from now that game will have an even better version for whatever PS hardware is out at the time. That PS1 version will still be meaningless to them, but different to the older generation. It will also be different as gaming heads towards a digital future. More profitable, and no leaks online early/streaming early. Factor in disc rot and other things, it makes sense to unload things you don't care about.

    Great logic and nice video, although I did sold all my old games collection and focused on switch but not for a investment, I genuinely love the switch and surpassed my fav console of all time (snes) Altho it was painful to say goodbye to my beloved collection I love the huge switch library, now I got a very personalized one, built according to my taste refined since my early gaming in the 80s, got around 150 switch games and I love them all, no fillers! (I do despise the high prices in games that are not older than a year damn it! Also fear how I will patch games in 20 years if servers are gone).

    Peopl are grading games you can still buy new of the shelf. You buy a new game pay $100 for them to tell you it's new and in good condition and then they put it in $5 plastic box for you. In 20 years time every game will be a 9.4+ graded so these games won't be rare or valuable. The played opened copys will probably be worth more because of the novelty of actually seeing what a real game looks like. I kid you not.

    While I understand your points, I'd would like to point out the fact that new Gen consoles/games require internet updates day of release. At some point the servers will be shut down. This is why I collect older games and will happily trade in newer games for credit. WATA collecting is already questionable, but sealed games from then on new Gen is ridiculous. There are collectors and there are investors. No game collector will ever pay investor prices

    if everything becomes digital, for a physical being (us), the physical format will be more desirable
    the demand for physical will go up, this is the next sustainer for the market along with the usual relatable factor
    Nostalgia is always marketable throughout the ages.
    Collecting games, pokemon cards becomes more commonplace and a show piece in everyones home creates more desire & demand
    Just because many people are making the rarer mint 9.6 - 9.8 available, doesn't change human nature.
    Essentially, game collecting has room to become more common as a conversation starter, or showpiece.

    I still think those 10 sealed copies of Super Mario 3D All Stars I ran out to get at launch is going to be worth a fortune in the future. I mean Nintendo did say they were only making a _limited_ amount of them.

    Hey dude, stumbled on your channel and been enjoying it.
    How do you feel about big box cardboard variants from modern sets? So like the Pokemon Sword & shield double game variant, or Mario Maker outter cardboard case. Even though these are modern, would you consider buying these or having long term potential?

    • @GetTheGreg
      @GetTheGreg  3 роки тому +1

      I do like those much more. Really, anytime there is at least a cardboard outer of some sort, you add in that extra difficulty of obtaining "mint" examples. I still prefer short term flips on those types of items, but the long term potential for sure exists!

    These games are going to be like trading cards from the 90s. I have a sealed ff chronicles and anthologies (greatest hits)that I bought 20 years ago and never opened because I never got around to playing them. They are sitting there in great condition with stickers and all. You would think final fantasy games on ps1 would be worth a good chunk nowadays but they have barely gone up in value from when I bought them years ago for $20 a piece. I'm no expert by any means, but seems like a pretty risky business.

      @@GetTheGreg True, but with limited edition games like 3D All-Stars, it's better to get a digital copy that you can keep for yourself since you only have one chance to get it before it's gone forever.
