- Опубліковано 14 січ 2024
- This interview was published around broadcasted around April 2013 (around Tom Lehrer’s 85th bday) Here he talks about how he came to write comedy classics such as The Vatican Rag, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, The Elements, etc.
The full interview mostly has someone talking about Tom Lehrer’s life, and has contributions from Randy Newman, Stephen Sondheim, Harry Shearer, and Cameron Mackintosh. I edited them out, so all you’d hear is Tom Lehrer talking. For those want the full interview, the link is below:

@TLS0ngs Thank you! I am absolutely in love with Lehrer, as are friends of mine!
Vatican rag
He's released all His songs into the public domain, for those interested.
When my parents got married in 1952, they lived in Princeton (my dad's alma mater). Tom recorded his first album in 1953. It slowly gained notoriety on the Ivy League circuit, and when my mom heard one of her friends play it, she told my dad that they had to get a copy! I was born in 1959 and I remember this album was one of the first records I remember hearing in my life. I didn't get some of the jokes but I enjoyed the music and liked that it made my parents laugh. After I got a music degree in 1999, I had the desire to meet Mr. Lehrer in some way. Incredibly, I found his phone number in the public phone directory. I called him up, he answered and I asked him if I could take piano lessons with him. He laughed sheepishly and said, "Well, I don't think I'd be very good at it." So that was that. So I didn't get to meet him then, but I was thrilled to tell Mom and Dad that I'd spoken to him on the phone!
Wow! What an amazing story! I tried calling him one time asking for an interview after I mailed a letter to him, but I got no call back. Luckily I got a signature back along with him congratulating me on my excellent taste in songs😁
Excellent! @@TLS0ngs

An evening is never wasted with Tom Lehrer. 😅
Never ever😁. However it’s just pure genius for the name of a live album
Happy Every Tom Lehrer Day!
I am the same age as Tom and I have two CDs of his music and think he is sees the world just as I do, but he expresses things with songs and humor. All I ever did was march with banners and rant to friends. Happy Birthday Tom!
Good to see him Smiling!
I am excited to rediscover and enjoy Tom Lehrer''s songs at my age of 85 - He was our hero in the early 60s ..changed how we looked at the world Thanks TL
Still hoping for a gala *Tom Lehrer at Carnegie Hall* concert.
I grew up with Tom Lehrer resounding around our house, I still love his music and I can’t believe that at 20 yrs older than me he has such mental acuity, I am a slug in comparison! Great respect for a great man!
Thanks for posting this, love his music.
And thank you for listening to it :)
aaah this is such a wonderful interview!! a lot of these lines were quoted in the many articles i've read about him, it's so nice to hear the source of it! thank you so much for sharing, i really appreciate this channel :-)
Thank you for listening :)
Thanks for posting this, my Dad used to play Toms records to all five of us as kids in the Uk growing up, Ive got his piano music to delight those who've not had the pleasure 😂
No problem!
A great artist
I just introduced a friend of mine to Tom Lehrer's music this evening. 'National Brotherhood Week' and 'Hanukah in Santa Monica' are favorites..
I just introduced one of my friends to TL too! Never stop spreading his music!
@@TLS0ngs I promise that I will never stop..👍👍
Thank you so much for sharing
You’re welcome!!! More to come!
@@TLS0ngs How wonderful! The only LP of his that I found in Brazil was "That was the year that was", I still dream of having the complete collection! I sent a letter to Mr. Lehrer in 2018, I never received a response, but I hope he received it and knows that his work reaches Brazil
fascinating, nice, funny, instructive
And witty😉
Thank you for all the inspiration!
The Einstein of political satire. Began listening to him when I was 11.
Indeed he was!
He invented Jell-O shots (just fun fact)
Yup!
I thought I loved him before!!!!!
Always loved him, never knew that. Thanks!
