- In 1975 Christopher Lee (1922-2015) was filming 'To the Devil, A Daughter' at the (EMI) Elstree Studios, which are North of London. Through our EMI contact we managed to arrange an interview that took place in Hammer House which was then located within the studio grounds. Films clips have been removed to ease copyright problems. The interviewer is Mark Caldwell and it was shot (originally) on 16mm film, in black and white. This is the first time it has been seen since that time.
Please note, that the many years that have passed by, have not been kind to some videotapes and you'll notice more oxide dropouts than usual on this recording!
His voice is like a fine aged wine. Red of course haha.
Chardonnay...
He was a youthful 53 here, you could tell he was going to live well into his 90s.
Lee was largely autodidactic, meaning his extensive knowledge of various skills and subjects were mostly self-taught. He said in his autobiography that math ("maths" in the UK text) was his weakness, and he was bullied a lot in boarding school. So, it's even more inspiring to see how he took charge of his own learning.
Interviewer did a fine job of asking good questions and then getting out of the way while Lee spoke at great length at the speed of light.
From the vast interviews I have seen Lee has been a man who was always highly respected by his interviewers, when he spoke everyone would just stay quiet and all he says just makes you want to listen more and more about all his stories and memoirs. Surely missed, a magnificent Actor who blessed us with such amazing movies and performances. His career spans over so many generations of people there isn't a household that doesn't recognise him either as Dracula, Scaramanga, Saruman, Lord Summerisle, Count Dooku, Pastor Gallwells, Alquazar, Mohammed Ali Jinnah
(who he mentioned countless of times is his proudest role he ever did along with Lord Summerisle).
Amazing man, intellectual, knowledgable, remembered every single person he worked with and had a story to tell about everyone. Just watching his interviews is mesmerizing. Glad that I lived in the generation where I enjoyed him from Dracula up until his passing.
He would have had 100 years old on may 27th 2022....... RIP sir Lee.
I never knew Ian Fleming was his cousin, wow. I could listen to Sir Christopher Lee speak all day, very articulate and so honest, love this man !!!
Yes indeed
His voice was so calm and soothing that can be my "sleeping pill".
If i can't sleep i listen to his voice and I'll be honest it works
Our age has lost how to speek like this. Knows alot more than is letting on. Gets
So deep and then the James bond change of subject Comes.. Man's so switched on still deflects it in a polite articulate manner. If people can't see what he's saying is real.. More fool you
It’s crazy how much deeper his voice got as he got older compared to what it sounds like in this video
The Ghost that’s true but also sound recording was a lot worse years back
People quite often speak and sing in unnatural range for them. As it can be perceived by members of society as quite offensive if a low or high voice is used loudly. To not show character - people mimic. The middle range.
When person with a deep voice feels stress or tenceness (as on the interview), or talks with an intention to be polite - they go higher into the middle range.
That uncontious and contious behaviour is so strong, that deeper voices tend to not know their natural range pretty deep into life. One does not look further then bass singers: Peter Steele, Mark Lanegan, Nick Cave to name a few, their biography stories of voice are the same. Paraphrasing: I did not understood or accepted I had deep voice, so I sung in my higher range all the time and was puzzled why others can sing and I can not and why with that terrible singing I hoarse my throat all the time.
And to the older years the person becomes more seasoned and so biological voice comes naturally.
Because of that even such a deep voice actor can talk much higher in register, maybe to say many words in the short time, it may be nerves, subcontious, consciousness or politeness.
Aging takes its toll, although Christopher Lee's aged voice was just epic as a mauve folker.
A combination of age and smoking, but it is remarkable.
Sir Christopher Lee is the prince of horror movies, he was also the greatest Count Dracula actor and no one will ever matched that, plus, this is a super awesome interview talking to Christopher Lee in this 1975 gem!!
He was consistent and absolutely right about The Wicker Man. R.I.P. to a Gentleman & a true Legend
I always liked the detailed way he spoke
Thanks for sharing this. Fascinating! He was incredibly intelligent.
I understand they held off making a public announcement of his death until his family was informed.
RIP Sir Lee. Much love!
I imagine he is speaking from a certain level of experience because I suspect that in the field of entertainment, many have sold their souls for fame, literally.
Precious footage, thank you
Elegant and sophisticated man, talented actor. Facinating interview, if not frightening, a bit unsettling. He entertained us, romanced us, with his gifts and hard work. RIP, sir! And thank you. Your standards of excellence, both challenge and inspire us, and entertain us, still.
Many thanks for this! The man is a real legend!
It has been announced that Christopher Lee died today, 11 June 2015
Colin Grimshaw IT was announced today but he died sunday.
JonatasMonte Yes indeed it does now appear so. Wonder why they left it so long to announce?
Colin Grimshaw so they could let his family know first
Colin Grimshaw It was the 7 th and the news got out on the 11 th.RIP Sir.www.imdb.com/name/nm0000489/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm
so terribly sad about his loss... such talented figures should forever endure.
Damn his voice got so much deeper. But both voices are equally magnificent.
I suspect that he would have sounded much deeper in the room on this day, but this is a poor quality taped copy of a broadcast which itself was heavily compressed.
A voice like velvet you could listen to all night.
I want to know what sort of magic he kept in that ring of his.. To think that he wore it for all those years. o_o
Badass , RIP Christopher Lee
Thank you for posting this! What an extraordinary man. There are no more like him.
Great voice but his voice got even better with age and by better I mean deeper. I wish I was like Christopher Lee. I can even do an impression of him. To bad I can’t record my voice in the comment section
You stole my thunder. It is amazing how much lower his voice got.
Why would you want your voice to be that of another man? Are you not happy with your own?
@@cloudyns He never said that, he just admires Christopher Lee and hopes to be a good person like he is. There is nothing wrong with that, I can say I wish to be like my father or my grandfather, and I'm sure you might say or have said similar things. Now if he does wish to have a voice like Christopher Lee's, then that is a different story.
Fascinating interview, thank you so much.
Curiously enough, I was watching "100 Years of Horror" from 1996 recently and it seems that during the intervening 21 years between this interview and that production, his views on Witchcraft, Demonology and Satanism evolved to become significantly more historically informed and less reactionary.
What does he say in that production?
Beside Gerd Fröbe (Goldfinger) ,was Christopher Lee, Scaramanga(Man with the golden gun) the other james bond enemy, who i love till today.
An absolut genius man, with an astonishing story, to tell.
R.i.p.,sir Christopher Lee
Gentleman.
Great conversation.
I've been looking forward to this
Well I hope it doesn't take too long. I have work to do.
It may be difficult to secure your release.
Thank you for this
It must be the sound on this video. I have never heard his voice so high and thin. His voice was different in The Man with the Golden Gun and also the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, both of which he mentions were released before this interview . Or maybe he was just doing a different voice for fun?
Didn't people speak with a sort of media voice back then?
The interviewer asks, rather dubiously, about the existence of black magic at 1:33 and one telling off later, probably regrets it.
not a telling of he is just passionate about the subject bc I guess he did a lot of research for his role
That’s only a detailed response to a question. This is what interviewers are looking for, and he was undoubtedly happy that there wasn’t any dead air. Sir Christopher was one of the best raconteurs.
He reminds me of actor Christopher Walken in a way.
He’s a true Englishman actor.
They should do a film or film about his whole life , Evan from the tome he was an agent , to his life about meeting the devil 😈
It’s too bad Charles H. Schneer didn’t hire him for one of his productions. He would have looked right at home in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad as Koura.
The story about the baby 'soiling' on Christopher is brilliant.
Mark Caldwell? What happened to him? He's like those presenters on the old Open University programmes in the sixties.
Well, this WAS only 5 years after the 60's anyway!!!!! :-)
@@ColinGrimshaw Those OU programmes with their odd looking presenters were still going well into the 1980s. They were often well worth watching.
Great man on and off screen
I sure wish I could find out where he's interred. 6 years on, and no burial locale has ever been announced.
His ashes were spread at Surrey Hills
Why?
ominous painting behind him.
The film was shot in Hammer House so I guess the picture was in-keeping with the place.
“This is a fact.”
Young Count Dooku
Exactly why I'm here 😂 Currently reading "Master and Apprentice", which features flashbacks to when Qui-Gon first became Dooku's Padawan, when he was just a child. Not sure exactly how old Dooku is in those scenes, but I figured I could get a better idea of what he would look and sound like, by looking at old footage of C. Lee.
2:58 he does the shhh sign like stop asking me these questions
Let me tell you about a man named shhh.
That sign can also mean that he won't blow the whistle. Later he does a mason hand sign as well.
His voice oml
His voice wasn't as deep as it was later in life.
I wonder if this was because of a pipe or cigars.
Not uncommon for men as we get older.
he kne crowly...met him on the set of "The devil rides out"
Lee, must've conjured up his spirit then. Crowley died in 1947.
Not he but Dennis Wheatley
@@ivans.191 He can't have met him on the set of Devil Rides Out as it was filmed in 1968 and Crowley died in 1947.
Crowley was dead by then. Not saying he didn't know him or of him I mean it was A Crowley.
his explanation reminds me of the one provided by Marina Abramovic and performance "art"
Oh I remember that video .. A lot came out claiming it not to be blood just art but it was Definetly blood ..
@@jamesmilesassassin4179 Just like some dweeb name Chris Gethard who did a "mock ritual" with Will Ferell on his show was claiming it to be a joke. Even Will Ferell was yellling out "this is not art, this is not art" adding more power to it by telling folks watching it that it's real. These weirdos always try to disguise it as art.
Hi Colin, is there a way I can contact you regarding this clip and possibly licensing it? Thanks,
I have sent you an email tp make contact with you.
Lastima y no esta en español o subtitulada
I have switched subtitles on for this video. See if Google's translation works well enough for you to understand what he is saying. It may NOT be perfect!
He seemed so deliciously evil
He's asked if black magic is real and then pivots by misinterpreting what the question obviously meant. The interviewer wasn't asking if people have been doing rituals from dusty tomes in real life, he was asking Lee if he thinks any of that stuff actually works.
Mr. Lee misinterpreted nothing. The interviewer is asking about the rituals efficaciousness.
He answered it by explaining that exists, and he believes it
When he's says black magic exists as a fact, is he saying the magic is real and works or is he saying that it's a fact people actually practice these rituals irl?
I think he's saying both of those things. Black magic has been around for a long long time. If black magic didn't work people would have abandoned it long ago. He's quite serious about this stuff and not at all being coy or dismissive about it.
Here's just how serious he is and how dangerous it is to be involved in it:
ua-cam.com/video/vRVQD4FKPrY/v-deo.html
He's trying to put it across so you make your own mind up.
He certainly makes clear that he knows how dangerous it is and warns others.
Its common sense, I'd you're getting something easily there is going to be a huge price.
Unless you're a globalist... That is.
Secret societies exist for a reason and perform rituals and unspeakable things.
@@paul1242 It's all mostly placebo and other such equivalents. People practice a thousand of things daily that give no indication of working outside of their own perception...
Both.
What are those 2 Arthur’s names he mentioned who have written about it ?
Nicolas cage look just like him in the 1950s and 1960s
Based on how Sir Christopher Lee discusses the occult, would I be wrong in assuming he is a Christian?
I'm wondering the same. Eloquent, wise man.
No matter his religious beliefs, he was a great man and is missed my millions of people all around the world.
+Dylan Downs He identified as Anglo-Catholic, I understand, but was generally private about it.
he was
Religion or good works doesn't take anyone to heaven only trough Jesus
He came into the world to save sinners but Jesus won't force Himself on anybody He gave each one of us a free will to choose so I pray that Sir Lee knew Jesus because He's the only door to salvation.
Very articulate, reminds me of Jordan P
Jordan Peele, right?
He’s way more articulate and interesting than that ponce Jordan Peterson.
Wow, i wonder how high he's iq was.
He's gotta be genius level
High say 156
Hey, What A Great Idea. extra-large grandfather What do you think? 11
Hm, I do sort of believe Christopher Lee's take on black magic/occult and the overall "evil" was part of his image, or a way to smoothen the image of the movies he performed in. He certainly was a reasonable person, which makes it unlikely for him to take on this direct, literal meaning of evil or the devil, which is a very petty way of seeing the world.
says the mook with a pentagram as his profile image smh
Hahah either you're of them. So of course you'd never admit to it being true. Either that or you're just another hipster dweeb trying to be edgy that has no idea about the reality of Satanism. "Satanism isn't about Satan it's about living your life blah blah" is that you?
It's not coincidental that the people who responded to you contrarily did so derisively, with insults and conjectural ad hominem.
@@appidydafoo wannabe satanists don't deserve anything else, if they are serious about their beliefs they would see how disgusting it is to worship the devil, how anti-human, how anti-growth it is
Does the devil despise God? Yes
i love this man = the only thing I disagree with him is nature of evil. Evil is much broader cathegory than occult and evil is only inside man .Religion killed more people than all wars put together since the dawn of man. And Witcher man movie is masterpiece .As late mr Hitchens would say religion destroys everything . And this movie is proving it.RIP sir Lee
Well evil has a large range that's for sure but as for the utter bollocks of "Religion killed more people than all wars put together since the dawn of man" I don't think you've ever heard of resource shortages, or territory, or politics, or expansions, or heck even slaves! A simple example: why did Rome expand? Because of fertile soil not because of Zeus. Why did the British expand? Spices and money Why did the Mongols conquer? Because power and resources. Some of the greatest empires in history with many wars under their belts and yet religion was barely a part. Heck people murder out of money or love or anger all the time and that's just people!
Then again, Hitchens was quite the blowhard in his day saying things left and right. No wonder he was wrong about that too. He couldn't even correct his own smoking behaviour which killed him and that's a scientific fact! Some man of reason he was XD
Tl;DR Christopher Lee was so BASEd even back then. A shame he's goner. Would've loved to meet him
Satanists have been sacrificing and killing since the beginning. Why do you think witchcraft was considered dangerous back then
He's the devil!!
Best Dracula Forever!!!!
A handsome devil
Excellent actor but his knowledge about Black Magic and Satanism is based in his films and no in reality
His knowledge is based on the membership as a Freemason and witnessing firsthand what goes on in Hollywood. You're a small fish guaranteed when it comes to that stuff.
Oh really, his knowledge about black magic is not based in reality?
I hope you see the irony in your own statement.
Lee likely did have a broad, somewhat fantastical understanding of the occult, but he also had a lot of teaching and conversations with occultist figures and religious 'experts'
Hollywood is the epicenter of Satanism. Celebrities, Musicians, Actors, Comedians etc are all in secret societies. So they'd definitely be the ones to know. Many movies show you glimpse of what really goes on. They didn't learn that knowledge through research either..
Incorrect Christopher Lee was in WWII and was a spy agent. That man saw insane things. He also has a very wide knowledge of paranormal and metaphysical subjects. You shouldn't be so quick to dismiss him.
😷😍👍👏👏🌹
The Huysmans book he mentioned is called "The Dammned" in English, and I think that is what he is referring to when he talks about the appalling acts that are actually done. Huysmans (sic?) was basing the book both on his research on turn of the century French occultism, and the real life crimes of Gilles de Rais, which involved allot of black magic too. I feel a distinction must be made between, say, Chaos Magick, Thelema etc and what de Rais was up to, but he is correct that it is a historical fact that this stuff went on.
And still goes on
