  • Arriving on netflix, Square Enix's odd new TV drama Final Fantasy XIV 'dad of light' has had mixed online reviews from fans. After just 1 episode in I'm going to jump the gun and give my first impressions of this rather odd new series. Cringe or oddly masterful? If your reading this description before watching this video, can you guess which I think it is? :D ;)

@@Mr_Movie_Fan Yes it was based on a player's blog. You see Maidy in the credit, he/she blogged his/her experience with her dad and it caught the producer's eye hence the show was made

Ann speaking of dramas there is an almost universally applicable quote that sums up the essential message of dramas that portray the interaction of people's feelings. Although it mostly applies to more serious personal relations between friends than the more lighthearted humor of this one. So the next time you watch a drama think how hard it is for friends to uphold the following utopian ideal in light of all the lying, cheating, jealousy, mean competition. Even though the lying, cheating, jealousy and competitive fighting is what sells dramas in the first place and makes them so juicy and tense to watch. Anyway the quote is:
Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself and especially to feel, or not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real friendship amounts to, letting a person be and feel what they really want to.

You know with farenheit numbers get tricky suddenly you wake up and I means one, IV means two and VI means 3, then the evil numbers (4, 5 & 6) is only told as cautionary tales keeping children from traveling abroad filling their fragile lil skulls with sinful knowledge

I've watched all episodes and thought it was a cute show, and I've never even played 14. And regarding the acting, a lot of Japanese tv shows have that quirky, over-exaggerated style to them. Or at least from what I could tell anyway.

    • @mistwolf
      @mistwolf 6 років тому +5

Yeah, it is very much a different culture in TV acting in Japan, much more exaggerated and extreme. I kinda dig it a lot, it feels a lot less stupidly ‘pretending this is real’ than most Hollywood shows.

I just started it today too and it's really cute. They really manage to have all these fun plots that intertwine between real life and in game and it's fun to see how they just make the connections work.
Sure it's over the top and ridiculous too, but that is part of the charm.
I find it funny how they have the whole free company gather in the FC for all these conversations that would have honestly taken place over FC chat or a linkshell xD but it is adorable.

This show was a little cheesy but hit me in the feels, not going to lie. It also led me to a great Japanese show, Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories, which is probably one of the BEST TV shows I've ever seen, anywhere (100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). I highly recommend checking that out.

Not sure if that's the name of the song, but it's the song that plays in the area of Idyllshire in FFXIV.

Loved it, missed the announcement and was just super happy when I stumbled upon it on Netflix. Acting seems like normal japanese tv show acting from what I have seen so far. Perhaps even demure comparing this to something like Hana Kimi or Gokusen. A bit similar in style to Hotaru no hikari and Sore wa totsuzen arashi no you ni. Happy you liked it too mr Pez. Compared to the other things, isn't this a wonderful way to celebrate the 30 years of FF?

My father loves gaming too and it's really awesome. My sister and I always try to find him a game he likes for his birthday and such. Even though he likes shooters best and we RPG we can still connect on just loving gaming for fun and relaxation and also play together sometimes. I will definitely watch this series 👍

Actually my first game I played was FFVII. I had no idea what to expect. Nothing really traumatic, but I did go through some surgery and I was expected to move, which meant I was gonna miss a lot of my friends. At the same time, I was going through the part where Aeris was kidnapped and sector 7 was destroyed. I mean I was looking for something to cheer me up, usually the game is for that but then I see her story and what she went and I'm here thinking "Damn it didn't have to be that serious! Wait, why am I tearing? Wait I can't be cry-She's just a fictional game character! All she wanted was for you to buy her flowers! That's ALL she wanted!" Seriously it did get me to realize that nobody suffers alone. Just because you're in painful state, doesn't mean no one else can relate to that. I seek out other people and hear them out. Other experiences have led me to this of course, but learning about a story like the one in FFVII is one of those experiences I may take to heart.
... And that's why I like, Final Fantasy, I guess?

Well, from a guy who watches a lot of KDramas and also some Japanese Dramas, this one is quite standar actually. It has its good moments and it doesn´t take itsefl too seriously...wich makes it even better in itself. Regarding the acting, its actually good for the type of drama, I mean, when you have seen a lot of japanese dramas, you get the troupes of every drama rather easilly. This one falls for quite some, but overall is a good show. I liked how they worked some Final Fantasy music into the scenes, unless you put a lot of attention, you probably won´t notice it easily...but it´s there...just to name an example without spoilers, in one dramatic scene you can listen to the theme of Cornelia and, seriouslly, if you don´t put attention, you won´t recognize it, it´s made in a way that it´s so subtle that until almost when the scene is over you can get that is the Cornelia theme and the most impressive thing is that the theme works for the scene. Overall it´s not a masterpiece but its very enjoyable. They missed a lot of opportunities with some characters but its good anyway.

Maaaan I really disliked the first episode of Dad of Light. I thought it was super cheesy and had a level of cringe that was equal to none. What I did appreciate, which I think a non-FFXIV player would miss, were the jokes pertaining to the game. For instance the Tree Sapling scene, like obviously you can exit the town, but don't take on the biggest creature you can see XD. That kept me going, I am now 3 episodes in and enjoying it much more.

the fact that exactly this game ffXIIIV exist and the idea behind are reasons that makes this serie special for me i had or actually have a complicated relationship with my father and like lot others problems in the past because of snes, n 64 .....my dad has quit work too. the serie makes me feel good and its heartwarming i can identify myself with the protagonists and its shows may more of the mentality of japanese families and theyr hard life but also there trust in technics. i wanna know what happens next so I don't watch the prewiew because of spoilers. serie is 👍👍👍so far and i wanna know what's up with his dad lg bb

It's very japanese and good, but I'm surprised so many people could tolerate the cringe and cheese. I suppose the penetration of japanese culture has been so deep in the west that we've become far more japanese than we were 20 years ago. We're richer for it.

Personally, I'm placing it under "oddly masterful." It is one of those shows where it does make you think "what the hell am I watching?" The strength of it, imo, is that it is a charming story at it's core. Say what you will about the son basically catfishing his dad, it is still a story that I can see happening IRL.
It also kind of helps that it is great advertisement for FF14 since making friends in an MMO is a selling point for a lot of people.
