But looking back on the game, I believe there's a lot more to Dedan than just that aggressive persona. After all, he *is* the only guardian who is actually taking the time to do his job well; Japhet actively attempts to get his subjects killed, and Enoch stubbornly refuses to admit that getting his subjects addicted to sugar is nothing short of sadistic. Meanwhile, as prone to anger as he is, Dedan does an excellent job at keeping his subjects in line and making sure they do the jobs assigned to them, whether that be harvesting smoke from the mines, extracting metal from cows, filling out forms to receive plastic or pouring meat into bottles. Without his guidance and intimidation, the world of OFF would likely fall apart almost instantly, with none of the four elements being effectively produced. He's also very protective of his Zone, based on the fact that he's the only guardian who actively attempts to combat the specters; Japhet attempts to ally himself with them, and Enoch uses them in his twisted system to obtain more Elsen corpses. When you meet him in the post office, he even flat out calls Zone 1 "my beloved zone" and claims that he's "dedicated his whole life to this place." And that's not even mentioning the side of him that we see during the flashbacks in the Room... It really made me feel bad for Dedan to learn he used to be a nice guy during the events of The Room. I wasn't purifying monsters, I was just delivering the killing blow to already broken people... Not saying they were innocent but still.
Aha, same for me. But I think that twist is really nice, nobody is totally good nor totally bad in OFF, it makes characters really feel like actual people.
It's also the double edged sword of purity. The only purity is in pure blackness. in nothingness, nothing can be corrupt. The Batter's goal was always "purity". If there is no one to be corrupt, and no world to go against anyone's morality, then that is true purity.
The Judge/Pablo didn't protect anything in the end, just a wasteland. everyone was suffering, The Batter had to "rid the evil", Dedan being and asshole to his people, Japhet being corrupted by power, and Enoch killing his own people with sugar
So, mildly amusing story that I doubt anyone will see because of how old this is, but I feel compelled to tell anyway. I've loved OFF for years, and I very recently managed to get a friend to start playing it. (She's up to the mall in zone 2) After playing, I was walking her home and sort of asking her what she felt about the game so far. During this conversation I happened to bring up Dedan, which seemed to confuse her. I explained who I meant, thinking that perhaps she just hadn't picked up on the name right away, but this only seemed to confuse her more, with her responding "That was a dude??" Apparently she had mis-remembered some dialogue and thought that Dedan was The Queen.
Jacob Oliver Yeah I feel like Dedan was really underdeveloped. They were just some cruel-ass guy that showed up all of a sudden and then I beat his brains out with a bat an hour later after having really no relation to him except he was a big meanie.
@@sorarivers8667 I dunno, Dedan was a pretty perceptive guy considering he could gleam the motivations of the Batter before even meeting him. All he needed to correctly judge him was the knowledge of his actions. He was wrong about the great extent of The Batter's capability, but calling him a prig who thinks himself better than everyone was right. The Batter considered nothing pure except himself. Also, Dedan was the only Guardian who was still doing their job. Japhet turned to terrorize his subjects and Enoch let his Zone rot in neglect as he sat in his office all day. Dedan still did routine check-ups on his land, helped his subjects with the spectres (assuming that one time the Batter did it instead made him jealous and vengeful because the Elsen thought someone more capable than him, I mean Dedan did say he would've done it if he hadn't been replaced) and attended to his duties as inspector. Dedan may be vulgar and easily angered, but he certainly wasn't one-dimensional. I agree with OP about wanting to see him more active in the game.
What about Enoch? In Zone 3, you don't see him at all and no one even talks about him besides "the director said the specters are nice". Heck, you don't even know what he looks like until you enter his office. In my opinion, Enoch was the one who should've gotten more screentime. Though, it would've been nice if ALL of the gaurdians got more time the spotlight. all this for a tall mister
@@cptchimp It's more fitting that Enoch didn't have much screen time, given how neglectful he was. Plus, it builds suspense of what Enoch was truly like. When the Batter meets Enoch, it's an eye opener to how corrupt his zone is. Not to mention how the player is forced to watch as the spirits slaughter the workers, made helpless to the lies of their own guardian.
It was a surprise to see the badmouth and angry dedan in the room be a very caring and sweet person to presumably Hugo. He’s not a bad person at heart, and just wants what’s best for everyone, even if he had a cruel way of showing it.
Been thinking about OFF a lot lately for some reason, and I've definitely come to appreciate Dedan more than I originally did. Especially the noise he makes, my god it's so wonderfully awful.
Dedan actually had a legitimate reason to be angry at the Batter from the start of the game. Imagine this, you are an envoy of the most respected figure in the entire game (I.e The Queen) who probably has very high expectations of you, and one day you find some random guy with a baseball bat doing your job for you. Wouldn't that infuriate you? In a world where work is everything and everyone takes pride in their work, having either a seemingly inexperienced worker or someone who is more skilled at your job than you are both very embarrassing for someone as high ranked as Dedan. Dedan didn't want to Batter to succeed in purifying the barns, he didn't want to feel as though he was being any less useful or replaceable. It could also be that we are supposed to imply that he is always angry from his introduction, but we know there was at least one point in time where all of the Guardians were happy... things used to be very different. [I don't know if I will comment for every character, it will depend on when I feel I have processed enough information to leave one (even though I have had a few years to process this game). I still feel as though I can find something new whenever I play or read about this game. That means it is a work of genius]
I actually agree with this analysis, and I would like to add my own two cents to that. Remember, we know there was a time when Dedan (like the other Guardians) was optimistic and happy. In The Room, the past version of Dedan wanted to make a world where everyone had fulfilling jobs and maintain harmony together. *_But he failed._* Despite Dedan's ideals, the present time reveals that he still couldn't successfully build a happy world of satisfied workers and world harmony. It's no wonder that Dedan wants to be useful and irreplaceable, he feels that he let everyone down: the Queen, his fellow Guardians, and himself. No matter how hard Dedan fights the spectres, no matter how badly Dedan scares his Elsens into working, no matter how many hours Dedan pours into his industry... it's not enough. The wonderful utopia that he wanted is forever out of reach, and I think that Dedan knows it deep down. It's why he acts so angry to The Batter and to the Elsens; he's projecting his rage at his own failures onto them. *Which is pretty tragic, because **_Dedan is ironically the BEST Guardian_** out of all three.* Because Enoch forces his Zone's population to get addicted to drugs and uses their cremated bodies for that drug, and Japhet straight up tries to commit genocide onto his own Zone even though it was his own fault for spoiling them. Dedan, meanwhile, is the only Guardian who actively tries to improve his Zone by giving his Elsens jobs in several industries, traveling around the Zone to fight the spectres on his own, and ensures that his business exports are shipped out to other Zones in order to keep the world running. Dedan probably does not even know that the other Guardians have become true monsters: Dedan would be horrified and beyond pissed off if he learned how Enoch makes sugar or if he learned how Japhet completely abandoned his duties. At least Dedan genuinely puts in effort to make his dreams for the world come true. Dedan is a man who could never be satisfied by the hard work that he put into the world, even though he is probably the single hardest worker in the entire game world.
I just learned this today when I tried to beat the game with as few kills as possible: Dedan will straight-up stop attacking once he's used up all his CP, since all his attacks consume CP. Mortis didn't give him a basic attack like he did Japhet and Enoch, which means that once Dedan's used up all his CP he just sits there like a chump and lets the Batter wail on him. Kind of ironic, given his personality...
This actually makes sense, as his theme slowing down to that drum at the end implies how exhausted he is at the end of the fight. I mean, he’s been working his butt off beating up the specters, and by the time he fights the batter he is probably exhausted. I feel like him stopping his attacks is him being fully exhausted and falling over, letting the Batter beat him up.
Fighting dedan is hard for the 1st battle (just started OFF) but DAMN it's amazing edit: i finsihed OFF like six months ago and now he isnt so hard. i just hate how he puts my team to sleep.
Dedan may seem bad but he does actually get the job done. Elsen in his zone actually seem like your average human just mildly timid so he's clearly doing something right
Same. Zone 2's Elsens are lifeless and paranoid af, while Zone 3's Elsens are hyper drug addicts who have homicide as a withdrawal symptom. Zone 1's Elsens, meanwhile, are just nervous bois who are trying to keep their heads down and do their jobs, and things only get out of hand when they have to face the stress of dealing with intruders (Spectres, the Batter).
I'll say it. I miss Sailor Mouth Dedan. Honestly it gave him alot of personality. Made him feel like he was so fed up and angry at all his incompetent subordinates, and contrasts really nice with how kind he is to Hugo in the ending.
I always thought he was stressed from The Queen, who might of had some very high expectations from him, giving that she made him the role to kill all the specters. And stress can make you angry, right?
Honestly same, after having replayed the game it does feel alittle weird. thought I dont think it really takes away from the anger you know he's feeling. Like even without the intense amounts of swearing just his deminer and the situation in of itself can bring out alot of anger ans frustration.
My favourite part begins at 1:22 There is something heroic about that moment and it probably even is a hint that the Batter is actually the bad guy all along.
The rhythm-drag at 1:07 sounds onomatopoeaic with the spinning of a revolver barrel, which I find fitting in the circumstance. This whole song is an angry "Fuck you; you're dead meat!" with an aching sadness belying it. In-line with the themes of OFF itself, this is a song about pain, fatigue, and functionally overwhelming emotion that oscillates between a screaming fervor and a crippling despair. The orchestra isn't even real; it's all in your head. And the barrel just keeps on _spinning._
It's funny how he's referred to as the Tall Mister even though both Japhet and Enoch tower over him (though I suppose that's because Japhet is the size of an ordinary bird in his bird form, and he doesn't seem to like to show his true form unless he's forced to battle)
+Popcioslav - Oh. Oh my. I have another tab open on the other side of my screen with Gaster's Theme on it. I'm looking at comments from you in both tabs. How interesting...
well, i'm working on a hack n slash remake of off, and i was thinking of using peper steak for the trailer when i make enough game to record one, but i might use this I'M NOT SURE ;-; updates are here if you wanna see: nobaothns.tumblr.com
It'll come out some time. Right now it's very hard to do things on my own and it's been postponed till I finish up some other projects, but rest assured, it WILL come.
I love how simple OFF's music manages to be, while still maintaining such a powerful mood. this is pretty much just a four chord progression, yet with those drums and some added flair, it's absolutely menacing.
I've always been a melody kind of guy, the one you can whistle doing the dishes ir smth. But the beat here is the exception, it's so freaking good in a way that feels surreal, almost as if they made the percussion with the elements of a melody, and the last part where there is this reverb and there is a beat that is repeated twice. So good.
I'd say of all the guardians, Dedan is the only one who wasn't truly corrupt and the only one who didn't deserve his death sentence and execution. I mean sure, he was really harsh on his workers, but that's about it, every single part of zone 1 fulfilled its purpose with no malfunction and overall well-being of the elsen was relatively good, and out of the three guardians, he was the only one who was actually fighting the spectres. The Batter didn't put much effort into trying to reason with him, or simply didn't care to do so, and it ended up being a "kill or be killed" situation :v
"Dedan...despite his power, he fell to the Batter. He had rage, wrath and might, but it meant nothing to the Batter." "So the first champion has fallen. I can only hope the others can protect this poor world before it is too late..."
Don't you just love that little segment from 2:19 to 2:34? Wish I knew the sound of that instrumental, sounds like a sample of someone slapping their pants.
There is a Samurai (Japanese Warriors) vibe in Dedan's theme. The recurring tune accounts for it, especially when it starts again at 2:06. That's the reason this theme grows in me and now I like it more.
him and enoch are both really clever, dedan is like a warlord and enoch is like the capitalist bourgeoise. the only guardian not really unique, design-wise, is japhet
Why do I imagine a marching band playing this? Like you got snares doing rimshots during that drum break while the basses are doing the other beats and then the quads/tenors join in and then you got the hornline playing the background melody all the while you’re maneuvering the field and two color guard members and dressed as The Batter and Dedan duking it out
I dunno how many time I've heard this... and still love it. My favourite song in all the game.... and the minute 2:20 its literaly the best part... Well at least my favourite part xd
Who would win: a dude with an hula hoop, and a baseball bat -(who is also a monster)- or a guy, who curses and screams a lot, and is then guardian of the zone, the answer? Both. ( well, most of time, many people die to him in their first play through, and then they win... so )
I didn't game over to any of the guardians my first run through. The first time I got a game over was when fighting Sugar (not knowing about the poison trick).
Maybe it´s because in both "The end in nigh" and "Fake orchestra" you are fighting against a strong warrior that decides to end you due to the fact that you are "corrupt" inside (Brad killed dozens of men and the Batter being "a big ducky")

It really made me feel bad for Dedan to learn he used to be a nice guy during the events of The Room. I wasn't purifying monsters, I was just delivering the killing blow to already broken people... Not saying they were innocent but still.
i felt more comfortable thinking that dedan was an asshole...
Exactly. Why side with the Judge, and defend an already dead world, when you can stay with Batter and get the better ending?
Just to put this out there :
Most health: Sugar ( 12000, but extremely weak to poison)
Most CP: Hugo (9999, but doesn't use any)
Aidan McCreery Whoa, that's crazy. Where'd you get that info?
Aghaene He probably got it from the wikia. Also, there's a move you can do in the game where it analyzes the enemy and you can get all it's stats
XBeccaDrawsX I checked the wiki and didn't see it, and Wide Angle doesn't let you see boss stats.
Hmmm, then I don't know how they knew that then
XBeccaDrawsX nice profile pic, also, my brother commented sugar & hugo's stats, so idfk
So, mildly amusing story that I doubt anyone will see because of how old this is, but I feel compelled to tell anyway.
I've loved OFF for years, and I very recently managed to get a friend to start playing it. (She's up to the mall in zone 2)
After playing, I was walking her home and sort of asking her what she felt about the game so far. During this conversation I happened to bring up Dedan, which seemed to confuse her. I explained who I meant, thinking that perhaps she just hadn't picked up on the name right away, but this only seemed to confuse her more, with her responding "That was a dude??"
Apparently she had mis-remembered some dialogue and thought that Dedan was The Queen.

Just imagining Dedan in a dress makes me laugh
I was gonna say shouldn't she know since he has his chest exposed but at the same time i remembered how Sucre walk around.
Plot twist Dedan WAS the queen all along
@@dantecalamity Now that's a plot twist I can get behind
I wish that Dedan had lasted longer in the game, he was one of my favorite characters.
Jacob Oliver Yeah I feel like Dedan was really underdeveloped. They were just some cruel-ass guy that showed up all of a sudden and then I beat his brains out with a bat an hour later after having really no relation to him except he was a big meanie.
YES

KreepyKat911 AAAUGH
KreepyKat911 I like the noises he makes. It sounds... crunchy.

I know, right?
His looks, his personality and his time theme are really interesting, but his voice tic is so weird as to be memorable.
Same
Dedan actually had a legitimate reason to be angry at the Batter from the start of the game.
I like this interpretation, so cool to see stuff about this forgotten gem of a game
*_But he failed._*
Despite Dedan's ideals, the present time reveals that he still couldn't successfully build a happy world of satisfied workers and world harmony.
I love characters with a short temper. They're the most interesting.
Hence why I liked this fight.
Fighting dedan is hard for the 1st battle (just started OFF) but DAMN it's amazing
edit: i finsihed OFF like six months ago and now he isnt so hard. i just hate how he puts my team to sleep.
@@dollycheesecakes3658 Dedan can actually be pretty easy if you use a ton of Competence.
やっぱりoffのbgmは良い。中毒性がある。
Dedan may seem bad but he does actually get the job done. Elsen in his zone actually seem like your average human just mildly timid so he's clearly doing something right
The "job done" is him letting people die because he doesn't care about them.
Not to mention he was going to purify the spirits in the barn had the Elsen not let some random person (the Batter) in.
My favourite part begins at 1:22
There is something heroic about that moment and it probably even is a hint that the Batter is actually the bad guy all along.

Fun fact from a percussion loser. The instrument used to get that noise is called a vibraslap!
@Harrison Fackrell Well said.
Bring it on Tall Mister
It's funny how he's referred to as the Tall Mister even though both Japhet and Enoch tower over him (though I suppose that's because Japhet is the size of an ordinary bird in his bird form, and he doesn't seem to like to show his true form unless he's forced to battle)

Because of you, I won't stop listening to it now.
I've always been a melody kind of guy, the one you can whistle doing the dishes ir smth. So good.

This song makes you feel like you don't have to defeat Dedan, it's like stop defeating the most important Guardian...
I played this last year for the first time, and am a proud fan of this game.
My favorite part is at 1:21 when it briefly changes the key into major. It's just such a simple, but effective touch.

This song really reminds me of "The end is nigh" from LISA (I know off came first), and i don´t really know why
It does sound kind of similar in terms of pacing. Maybe the LISA dev got inspiration from this song?
Maybe it´s because in both "The end in nigh" and "Fake orchestra" you are fighting against a strong warrior that decides to end you due to the fact that you are "corrupt" inside (Brad killed dozens of men and the Batter being "a big ducky")
