    The 98 PC has been absent from the channel for almost 6 months now. Today's video marks the return of an MJD classic, with a new challenge to go with it: Can I (a non-French speaker) install a French version of Windows without relying on a translation tool. Let's find out!

    Clavier means Keyboard. And the reason why you were having issues trying to put numbers in the partition size is because since you had selected as French as the keyboard layout, you have to use the Shift key to type the numbers above the letters. When typing without the shift key, you're inputting symbols or the accents on the characters such as é â ï ô etc..

      Azerty may be one of the most flawed keyboard layout I know of. Like, there's a key for ù, a letter only used in the word "où" [where], but there is no way to write a capital é, present at the beginning of many words and names, without using alt codes (that doesn't work anymore in Windows 11). But I can write Ù quite easily, even though it is never used.
      Bonus: here's the number row but without the shift key: &é"'(-è_çà

    Having Windows in a different language presents an opportunity to experiment further:
    I believe you could theoretically install Windows NT 4.0 English & French versions to the same partition, assuming that the Program Files directory has a completely different name on the French installation. Simply install one of the versions to a WINNT directory and the other to a directory of a different name. Both installations should coexist in the same partition as a dual boot without issues.
    Likewise this might allow other combinations like a French version of NT with an English version of 98SE, and so on, which might otherwise have collisions with a common Program Files directory. English 95B and NT4 work fine though, as their Program Files do not clobber one another by default, unless you install or "upgrade" something completely unnecessary like Internet Explorer on each.

      Not sure about French, but I've used Polish versions of Windows all my life, going back all the way to the 3.1 days, and Polish 95/98 definitely used "Program Files", written in English.
      Current versions still do, actually, but it got really weird since Vista and 64-bit. On Polish 64-bit Windows, you've got "Program Files" for 64-bit apps, and "Pliki programów (x86)" for 32-bit apps. Why the inconsistency? Beats me.
      Then again, since Vista the localized names are just alternate display names for Explorer; the names in the physical filesystem are all in English.

    Hey Michael, I know something nice that you can bust out the $5 Windows 98 PC on, since you don't have anything that you can use the machine on. It's known as the Win9x Project, a custom all-in-one installation CD of Windows, which includes Windows 95, Windows 98 (first and second edition) and Windows ME. I distinctly remember messing around with this on virtual machines in the mid 2000s, and I'm interested to see it working on real hardware.

To quit the installation program, press F3."
    Windows NT4 Workstation, at this time, could handle partitions of up to 4GB in size, which is why you're seeing this error.

    • @bland9876

      How do you use partitions of only 4gb? Do programs just split themselves up amongst the different partitions during install or?

    • @slashtiger1
      @slashtiger1 2 роки тому +1

      @@bland9876 You're forgetting the fact that, in 1995, when NT4 saw its first release, many programs didn't even exceed 200 megabytes. In fact, they mostly didn't even approach 100. The limit was raised in Service Release 4, when the NTFS drivers where updated. Also, the _server_ family had different limits. There were constraints that the Workstation family had to deal with, mostly regarding limitations arising from BIOS configurations. Also, the fact that Logical Block Addressing limited hard disk size to begin with, had a large impact upon what you could and couldn't do. Windows 98 was released when Windows NT4 was at service release 6a, by which time most of its limitations had been resolved. But judging by the build number on screen in this video, I expect that this specific version of NT4 will have been at release 2 or 3 at the most. The RTM release did not support booting from CD ROM and this one did, so that strengthened my belief that the build used here is at least on service release 2.

    • @slashtiger1
      @slashtiger1 2 роки тому +1

      @@bland9876 True. And there's the fact that developers don't have such limiting constraints to deal with. Back in the day, loads of software was written in pure assembly language. Much harder to code, but taking up much less space. Nowadays, because of the tremendous speed of current hardware and compilers, loads of stuff is written in C, C++, C# and the like. Easier to code, taking up more space. But there's also the phenomenon of shared code bases, meaning that a program which was originally written for Windows can be ported to Mac (for example) with relatively little effort. But this comes at a price, because it's all far less optimised than it could have been. So, again, things take up more space than they used to.

    I had a very similar gateway pc, except with was the 500mhz pentium 3 variant.
    It was the first pc that was truly mine when I was a kid. I obtained mine in January 2002 when it was already on the verge of being obsolete depending on the type of game you played.
    I somehow still got good use out of it for 3 solid years before the pc died in January 2005.
    Essentially it mostly played blizzard games like diablo, diablo 2, starcraft, warcraft, warcraft 2, warcraft 3 albeit kind of choppy at times. Funny enough during the last 2 months of owning this pc i played world of warcraft on launch and it was playable in the sense that PVP battlegrounds were not a thing yet in the game.
    Everything else was just year 1999 fps games like unreal tournament, quake 3, descent 3 and older 90s titles.

    Even if you can't speak a language , if it's a latin/germanic/european one, you at least will recognize some word or other. To go completely blind through the process you'd have to pick a Chinese, Japanese, or, quite fittingly since this came from Morocco, Arabic version of the OS.

    I honestly didn't expect the AZERTY keyboard layout to play into this. It was very much like when I accidentally switch my keyboard input from AZERTY to QWERTY because Windows has a shortcut for it and it's way too easy to switch between the two accidentally, apparently.
    It was a great watch as a French speaker who's only ever used French Windows for sure!

    Back in the days I worked at a company that sold their own brand laptops at the repair departement. At this departement we also installed Windows. During this time I has to install a Japanese or Chinese version of Windows 98. This was very fun to do because the installer was complete in that language. I was able to install it due the fact that I had installed Windows 98 multiple times and by looking at the icons in Windows.

    Please note that Windows NT 4.0 has a partition size restriction of a maximum of 4GB. You cannot install Windows NT 4.0 on a partition that is larger than 4GB, so if you have a bigger hard disk you need to shrink its size to 4GB. However, the rest of the unallocated storage space in computer management cannot be used to format the rest of the disk. If you use a real physical hard drive, make sure it has a maximum size of 4GB, otherwise you will be in trouble with the size of the drive. Windows NT 4.0 is the only 9x version of Windows to have this limitation.

    • @fifaworldcup1994
