I'm excited to keep up with your aquatic plant journey! I've always loved lilypads (water lilies?) If that's feasible to add to your collection! 😊

Hi Amy. I find the subject of this video interesting even though it’s highly unlikely that I’ll ever own an aquarium. Anything involving plants & nature I can’t get enough of, so I’ll be waiting keenly for the next update video to see the progress of this new project.

Hi Amy, so sorry to here about your turtle's passing! I have a young Mississippi map turtle (5yo this year) who is currently hibernating at a shelter as I didn't have the means to offer a safe hibernation space this winter (but will hopefully have in future), and I miss him/her (don't know the sex yet) so much even though I'll hopefully have him/her back in a few weeks. He/she is not as rude to plants as it sounds like your girl was, he/she eats most of the plants I plant in the tank but leaves some alone, like hornwort and Echinodorus. Love this little experiment with the aquatic plants, I'm sure they will do well in your tank as you have chosen mostly "easy" plants (the Alternanthera reineckii Rosanervig will definitely need more nutrients). What are your water parameters? I have all these plants in my community tank (not my turtle's tank) as well which has quite hard water (GH 13-14) due to the needs of the fish species I care for, and all of these plants do really well in my relatively cold, hard water tank without the addition of CO2, so I don't see why they shouldn't in your tank. I think the Ludwigia palustris might become one of your favourites, it certainly is one of mine, as it produces these intensely red leaves under a strong enough light source, it is such a deep, beautiful red and I love it so much in my tank. Another plant I would recommend to you, a really tall one that is a beautiful background plant, fast growing and very easy to care for in my experience, is Aponogeton boivinianus. It grows from a tuber and has these beautiful long leaves with a very interesting texture. Another beautiful and quite easy to care for tuber is Nymphaea lotus (different variants are available), it produces gorgeous greenish-red leaves with dark spots; I'd really recommend this one as well. You could also try some floating plants, my turtle loves to eat Limnobium laevigatum and Pistia stratiotes which also look very pretty imo and grow very long roots in the water, and Phyllanthus fluitans (red root floaters) are beautiful as well. There are also lots of different Anubias (coffeifolia is a stunner imo, and there is a variegated Anubias (barteri var. nana "Pinto") which will need more light), and many gorgeous Bucephalandra species/varieties available and these are all generally easy to care for, they are epiphytes and thus prefer to be attached to wood or rocks though. Oh, another one of my favourites that I almost forgot is Hygrophila pinnatifida, it can also grow as an epiphyte and has very interestingly shaped, delicate leaves that can turn reddish if given enough light. I grow it attached to a big piece of wood that looks like a tree trunk in my community tank and I think it creates a gorgeous foresty vibe.
