Great video, and good timing for me! I just got my fourth commission from a church for a communion set... but I've always thrown the stems for chalices the other way (so much trimming). I can't wait to throw not-upsidedown stems!
In ceramics class, I made a communion set for the church I attended. For the chalice, I first turned a wooden form on my lathe, to settle the dimensions. I wanted something the older ladies could hold easily, had a wide enough base to not be tippy, and a rim slightly turned in to help prevent spills. They liked the result enough that they asked for a second one.
Cool Chalice. So when drinking the non-alcoholic... I think the curve should be the other way, considering the volume you'll have a mix of alcoholic beverage in no time. Please let us know how they worked out in practicality?
So cool and fun to watch! My church commissioned me to throw a set as well, but they wanted like 12. It's a large church, Maple Grove Mn. Church of the Open Door. I have to come out and see your studio. I'm in Buffalo. Peace, man.
Looks like the "holy grail" from Indiana Jones
"That's the cup of a carpenter" 😂
they are pretty nice for wine too!
Nice! Thanks so much!

Just thinking, maybe you could make a smaller bowl and cut it in half? And then attach inside
Glad the wheel head got fixed. I couldn't imagine that made the walls even throwing

Not an unnecessary comment to raise the rating of the channel!
nice !
Hi John, I've been watching a long time and I finally got the opportunity to take a ceramics class in college and I am enjoying it so much!

Communion / Pimp cup!
Sup nice piece
Hi Jon! What is the purpose of throwing the stem upside down?
hollow out that stem-portion, and you have the shell of a darbuka or djembe
faster: throw the bowl, dry it, trim it, make sure it's firm enough to support the weight. Throw the stem off the bottom of the bowl directly.
Your top of the chalice is bigger than the foot, so this would make the chalice top heavy when filled. I’ve make plenty so I know!
If you “giant size”, it becomes a sectioned birdbath!
Wait I'm confused- why two sections? Alcohol and non alcohol?? Whaaat??
Could you have thrown this in one piece?
Seems like pagans could use them too.
I believe Jesus's Challis was possibly made of wood, because he was a carpenter's son.
loool, fake pottery😁😁
