I really live how encouraging the clay community is: in a lot of other art forms; there's such an emphasis on keeping your practices to yourself. Thank you so much for being open and sharing your secrets! The world is more beautiful because of it.
Spent two hours glazing two mugs, a plate, creamer & sugar bowl along with ten buttons. Firing them tomorrow. Can't wait for class to see how they turn out. Its like getting a gift every time the kiln is done. These are my first thrown mugs, far from perfect but are straight and round. Taking Ceramics I at ASU in Beebe, AR
@@karencollier5577 you might want to try making drip catchers to put under things like your vase to prevent that problem: www.oldforgecreations.co.uk/blog/drip-catchers
Karen Collier this is so cool that you posted this. I have a grinder to deal with drips. Hate that job. Using those biscuits to catch drips is a great idea. Avoids messy shelves. The bottoms of your mugs is key to being professional and ready to sell. Definitely have to be smooth. This is a really big deal to buyers. Also to avoid drip mess put some horizontal grooves in your mugs. Trial and error. Let your kiln know that you are boss! Make a bunch more vases. Think how you can fix the problem. Just make more and never give up. Pottery is rocket Science. Jon send he would do a review of people's mugs so maybe mail him something. He's pretty kind and easy on people and has interesting things to say. 😉👍🏻🤖
Thanks for a very informative glazing video - one tip I might mention for beginners is to make sure that you wash your hands before touching your bisque ware so you don't get any oils on the surface. You also want to keep dust off of it - they can both keep glazes from adhering properly to the surface.
Wow! Now i totally understand why handmade items like these are so expensive. I did not realize how labor intensive they are. Really enjoy the vids. Thank you
I haven't played with pottery since highschool (6 years ago) but I just love watching others create. Your attitude is so positive and refreshing. I adore you. This makes me want to create!
LOVE your friendly and humorous manner of instruction. I'm a self-taught (also in Twin Cities MN) sculptures that's branching out a bit to decorative pots, etc... Glazing is a total mystery to me and your videos are SO HELPFUL! THANK YOU!
I am a “retired production potter” and I have been missing it so much! Watching you gives me the inspiration to start again. Thank you for sharing, you are amazing and I want one of your beautiful pieces! I will keep an eye out on Etsy
Thanks, I am an old potter in Huntsville Alabama and have just found your UA-cam videos. Thanks for doing these and especially this one on glazing large pots which has always been a struggle for me. I generally resort to spraying, but I like your option much better - at least until I try it and make a big mess. As in anything in pottery for the one who knows what he is doing it always look easy - not so much for the observer.
Just got my first wheel for Christmas and came across your videos! I love how entertaining you are while still being super instructive. Thanks for the videos!!!
Hi Jon Thanks for the useful video! Can you tell me a bit about the glaze you call ‘buttercream’ ? It looks like it’s simply a cream coloured glaze with a lower melting point than the glazes under so in firing it pulls the oxides down with it ?- many thanks - John
Yep Jon, blowing my mind ! Great technique which hasn't been covered in pottery class so......now I know. I find it amazing how different glazes react with each other. Thanks-Andrea
I learned these techniques from my teacher. They're great. I typically only use them for under glazes and use a brush to hand paint different designs on my pieces. Despite that they are invaluable. I can't tell you how much of a mess I would have made if I hadn't learned how to pour glaze.
I know this is an old clip but I loved it - thank you for showing the before and after of the actual glazed pieces, so many glazing tutorials don't show the finished product!
Thank you!! I am new to glazing, I have done fine with brushing, but dipping is much more difficult to get the hang of! Trying to get rid of runs and blotches!!! I am completely self taught hobbiest! Registered nurse by day and Potter by night! Earth nation and yourself have been my biggest contributors to learning techniques! I can not express enough my gratitude and will definitely become a Patreon of yours as I am already supporting earth nation! Small price to pay for loads of information! please continue to make your extremely entertaining videos and know that you are saving so much of my sanity!!
I had a good friend teach me how to throw pottery, glaze, fire, etc. Absolutely loved it. Then arthritis in my hands made me stop. I sure miss it. Love your work.
Wow super cool to know how glazing is done, I had no idea! The combinations you choose are beautiful! I especially love the canyon skies? The most colourful one :) thank you for showing!
I love to watch potters who get glaze movement in and on their pieces, glazing makes me nervous 😓 and I've washed off almost more glaze than kept, and for me I feel disappointed that I've 'ruined' stuff I throw because of my glaze application. I just need more practice. In class I usually save all my glazing up so I have time to think of colour combination that I can try, but if I have time I find myself throwing and trimming rather than facing glazing head on. Thanks for sharing your combos. Keep potting and I will keep watching
Love the outcome! Thank you for instructing, inspiring, and entertaining us! Beautiful fall colors, we are still in the high 70's in South Texas so not really fall colors just yet. Keep doing what you're doing!
I am always amazed with your videos, I have learned so much from them, that in the next few weeks I will be getting my first wheel, Been doing hand built, Time to step it up, You and all the other potters that use you tube have given me the courage , the desire , and the know how to dive in head first, sure , i expect some bumps in the road, But i will always have the potters here on you tube to help me, Thanks Jon, I have watch everyone of yours, along with the others,
