That was exactly my 1st second of watching the video thought too. I saw one of those paper cutters at a yard sale last year $3, I didn't buy it, I knew I should have, honestly thought about it hard and decided I'd only be using it once in awhile and storing it takes space I don't have, now I see another job it could do and would certainly make sweet tater harvesting much easier. I'll be looking for one at our Court Days in October, Ky. is one of few areas that still has the old ways of gathering goods folks needed. Bartering etc. they even sell guns you just have to look 18. My 1st time going to it I got a little freaked out as fellas walked around the place [outdoors] with a gun or guns over their shoulder either just bought it/bartered it or were selling it. 100's of folks toting a weapon . I heard only 3 places in America still do Court Days, they even allow children excused school days off as it is a History lesson walking back in time. Unfortunately I didn't live here my whole life, I'm 25 years in now so I've become one of them, it takes alot to be accepted in the backwoods culture living. It still amazes me how folks can look down on Farmers lifestyles and yet it is the ROOT of living for all of us. If your not dressed in Nike/Under Amor and are wearing overalls and sheet kickers for shoes your cast out as a disgusting person worthless in society. We however continue to plow through those check marked Nike folks as we are the True caretakers of Gods Country
I am making one today!! I have muscular problems . This is so cool and so useful. So glad you showed it to me.. Thank you Blessings and safety to the both of you
Be careful. You may want to use a fork or similar utensil to hold the item to be cut in place. That way there's a little space between you and the blade, especially with muscular problems.
OH MY !!! I worked in a local fruit shop some 55yrs ago for about 7 years- Mr Perkins (the owner) made one of these for the pumpkins & this is the first time I have seen another one (bought me to tears Danny) Happy Tears though. Yes always leave the cutter down !!!. That is the most beautiful piece of wood - well done guys. Cheers Denise- Australia
I’ve always just boiled my sweet potatoes whole. Then the peel slips right off with my fingers once they are done. I leave them slightly undercooked if I need chunks, like for candied sweet potatoes for holidays. I peel them with my fingers, and then cut them up. They finish cooking in the oven. For mashed, I just cook them all the way and peel them with my fingers. I do love that device for things like cutting a spaghetti squash in half for baking! I’m going to have to build one!
We bake 'em whole and love eating the skins! Can't get sweet potatoes here locally lately (Central Texas). Judging from the last ones we got there was a bad blight. It was a favorite breakfast!
@@charlesdevier8203 They also have fiber, vitamin A and are actually a complete food, barring vitamin B12 -- same as regular potatoes. Whole countries have lived on a diet of 90% potatoes, such as Ireland.
Oh I love MR. Al's chopping contraption. You could build a cover for that to secure it to keep little hands from getting hurt. Y'all should find some way to preserve Mr. Al's knowledge. I would love to know what kind of sweet potato Mr. Al grows. Your mantle is going to be beautiful.
Danny love the invention.. For safety can you develope a lock or catch for when the blade is at the upright rest position. This would prevent the blade accidently falling on your arm or hand. Also a guard if possible so your fingers can not slip into the blade while cutting.
The trick on plowing tubers with a cub is do the middlebuster like you've got it but put disk hillers in front of the back tires turned out, so they throw them away from the wheels as they roll out.
We have something simular to the potato slicer, we just used a meat cleaver instead of a machete. We use it mainly for chopping the ends off our corn before shucking. Makes shucking a whole lots easier.
Thank you for showing this cutter! I will be making one and showing others. This is GREAT! Thank you Mr Al. It's an understatement that this weather is so different for all of us. Bless the two of you. Be safe.
That comes from an old office task, cutting paper.....you can find them all around, and they are portable.....my grandpa was a teacher and had a paper cutter...we used them for cutting up all our veggies back in the day
As always you 2 have the best information to share with all of us. I began to dread Thanksgiving having to cut and peel those taters, I was ashamed I felt that way after the Good Lord provided the bounty for us to have a sweet tater dish on our table. Finding the strength to cut and peel during the days of preparation for Thanksgiving dinner grew thin as my arms/hands grow older and weaker and the family growing larger in numbers and bigger in appettite. 10 grandsons now 10-17 years old-1 granddaughter 16, 1 pot of a dish just wasn't enough, they're growing in leaps and bounds which means more growin cuttin peelin to fill the pallets of youth, I'm 66 and have been blessed with a Thanksgivng Dinner every year. Ya'll have just made my work easier THANKS FOR SHARING :)
Wow!!! I love it. Years ago I worked at a printing company where the paper cutter worked like rhat. It was so wonderful, it this I would like to have for my kitchen.
We haven't had a drought at all here in Coastal Alabama. RAIN, RAIN, RAIN for WEEKS! We celebrate seeing the sun come through between storms! :) I have a small sweet potato bed and it's a total loss. TOO, too wet. And you are right, if we have a tropical storm or hurricane, trees are going to uproot due to the soggy ground!
That chopper is basically a paper cutter I use for my classes all the time. Find an old paper cutter and file the blade on both sides. The blade will be nice and stiff and it will be the same thing.
My Paw-Paw did a version of your machete cutter on my Maw-Maws butcher block table, she would process veggies from his garden on their back porch. She loved it for shredding large heads of cabbage and slicing large cuts of semi-frozen meats. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
A great sweet potato slicer! It makes your work much easier which is Awesome! I love the skin of the sweet potato; a lot of nutrients are in them. Enjoy the rest of your day and God Bless. ❤🤗
When I was a kid, a long time ago one of our neighbors had a cutting system similar to this for cutting up turnips, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, stuff for his cows and pigs, we lost some Cedar trees during Hurricane Laura and Delta that I am saving for the same kind project.
Thank you for sharing the knowledge on the sweet potato cutter.. and that is one beautiful piece of wood... and thankful to God that y'all got to Salvage potatoes.
I was concerned about your sweet potatoes with all that rain. Happy to see them curing. I know you had to hump and git it to get them out of the ground! Mine are in raised beds and I haven't had near the rain you have. Day 125 will be Sept 8. Gorgeous mantel.
Yes.... tons of acorns here in northeast Pennsylvania too. Tons and tons like we've never had before and they're very large too. Blessings to you both. Thank you for sharing your stories with us. Prayers for healing, Danny.
That cutter is awesome. I may build one for butternut squash and other hard crops. That mantle is going to be beautiful. Hopefully you can get all potatoes out without ruining. Thanks for sharing.
Love this, God bless you all for this top. Be careful it doesn't loosen up, and accidentally come down, when it's no supposed to. I have multiple and very rare Autoimmune, and arthritis. One effects my muscle really bad, and coordination. I could not get out of a chair at one point. So glad for this tip!!! 😐
Prayers for anyone in the path of the storms we have coming up. Praying they turn out into the Atlantic and avoid land all together. That slicer is pretty cool! I’ll have to find that machete that I saw in the old barn 😊
That tool looks like what we used to call a paper cutter in the old photography business. They were great for cutting in a straight line and saved our hands. I wonder if they can still be purchased. Good
Danny & Wanda, that is a nice looking gadget. reminds me of the old Army paper cutters, and yes those blades are sharp. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. GOD BLESS
Everything attachment has a potato digger that works on the back of a tractor it may work for sweet potatoes. I think it would be easier and faster. Just a thought.

I remember when we were kids my pawpaw's neighbor had a field of potatoes..well the rains came and he notified pawpaw and we had to go with daddy and pawpaw to pick up the field
Danny if you take your middle buster and put it square bar and all arround to the back and put it across the bars for your rear cultivators. You might have to make a u bolt to clamp the bar to the individual arms but I'm sure you can make that in short order .problem solved plow behind wheels I do this to dig potatoes with my cub and super a.
great device - looks like the old paper cutter used in the office - sweet potatoes and pears are the hardest to peel
I'm a homeschool teacher an actually have one of those old paper cutters! Might have to use it to cut potatoes 🤣

I don"t peel them either; all the good nutrition is in the skin. Once the skin is removed, there is nothing left but carbohydrate.
