- Today's game is Subsistence. It's safe to say that this is one of the hardest survival games out there. Something about it is just the perfect combination of fustration and reward. Subsistence is a reasonably unknown open world survival game that was first released in 2016 making it pretty old. But, honestly it compares pretty well to even some of the best survival games released in past year.

Been playing Subsistence since very early on, it’s definitely one of the more difficult survival games when it comes to how much in the world can kill you! But the sense of accomplishment when you build something new is amazing!!
losing one day worth of loot because you didnt bring a single bandage on the trip.

as someone who has played subsistence for many years I can answer some of your questions.... The SOLO DEVELOPER is coldgames.
He has been developing the game for many years now and it has come a long way from where it began. The update cycle is typically every 3 months which is better than what some AAA dev studios can manage.
There is even a number of dedicated servers for the game where you can experience multiplayer PVP or PVE
The hunters will populate the world after day 3 unless you choose not to have them.
There are far worse animals than bears and wolves.... cougars are a lot of fun to deal with for late game crafting materials...
Fishing is another way you can gather food besides killing animals, as well as animal trapping which can help for getting rabbits and chickens.
If an animal kills you, it levels up...

You know you’re fucked in a survival game if it starts you out with a gun.
honestly that gun is nearly useless. You are MUCH better off making a bow early (or a fishing rod).
I’ve played this cuz it looked fun. Worst 5 hours ever spent
Me and my brother cooped this game for a while. Enough to reach whatever you could get to in the game at the time. But it suffers from what most of these empty open world games do: it ends up leading nowhere. Once you've leveled up or acquired all of the things, there's nothing left to do but wander around aimlessly.
If you want something counter to this, there's a steam open world coop game which takes place on a wintery island and you fight a dragon boss at the end. Huge, hours long brutal end fight. I can't for the life of me find its name on Google now by searching for the relevant terms, on any reddit posts. Dang. But if you can find it by searching, it's title is two words. They're just not coming to me. It's a bruuutal hard coop surviving experience. You will die a lot with your friends lol. Kind of like a coop dark souls. But it's worth it in the end and at least there's an actual (really hard) ending to it! So you feel satisfied when you finished it. I'll report back if I can find it. I can't believe how little popularity it has on lists of open world survival games. I mean people are mentioning every coop survival open world game out there, except this one lol. Ugh!
The game was called Savage Lands! It's fairly unknown but it's excellent

4 minutes in, Rye finally crafts a bow, all Subsistence players finally relax their sfincters, only to realize he still hasn't washed his hands, and they all start feeling itchy...
dude you've seen nothing of the game XD there'is underwater caves, you can build an atv and a glider, rockclimbing and scuba gear, seasons changes and the ecossytem changes accordingly. it's an insane game.
Subsistence is made by ColdGames,wich is a single guy. this dude is extremely talented. i've been playing subsistence since the beginnings and i must say ColdGames is one of the most communicative devs around. he constantly talk with the community about updates and whatnot, and the game is shaping just like the customers wants it. wich is rare nowdays.
the game is indeed HC af and grindy to insanity: the sound of chopping wood still echoes in my brain at night. the game is also incredibly fun both in coop and in single.
This thing about echo i understand, when i was playing too much wild rift I couldn't close my eyes to sleep that i would immediately start
hallucinating, seeing like I'm playing a match. Like a replay, although with a created by my Brain match. I was able to sleep, but that was a very psychedelic experience.
But i could avoid this by just imagining myself walking outside at night. The uncomfortable part is that i felt like I was really looking at the game and without knowing what would happen next
Anyway, i will try this game when i build my PC.

This game is a pain but it’s not bad. For those new to this game you can attach the buildings together with ease. He just didn’t clip it.
Old friend of mine suggested the game to me in 2019 and i bought it its honestly a very good game in my opinion. Sure it can be better but i like it how it is
I personally love this game! Just started playing it. I’ve played lots of survival games tho so maybe that’s why I like it so much, it’s a challenging game but so rewarding when you accomplish even the small things 🙂
Love Subsistence
Its the most hardcore survival game. Its not for everyone. But fun to raid npc bases or defend them when they raid you . Grow crops etc .
A perfect first day in a breathtaking setting. Looking forward to see more :)
ive got 250 hours in this game, and i can tell u, i still have no clue what im doing either, seeing someone new play and go after a level 3 wolf right off the bat tho was absolutely amazing hahahaha

The fact that the lockpick was already there, and he didn't use it.. .really hurt me. I will add that this is the only game where i've invested HOURS on it and i still find it enjoyable even though there isn't much to do. Of course I play easy mode and I avoid animals like the plague and no hunters are available until I am well settle as those npc scare the shits out of me. The game itself is getting better. Coming from the beginning where it was a small island with no map and no water, plus no hunters, caves, certain vegetables and of course fishing.. ( not to mention change of season) the game as only gotten better. We now have vehicles so that helps when you have the massive map we have now.

Ah Subsistence, I remember its early days when I got the game myself. It had barely anything and I already loved it, had forgotten the whole game already but now suddenly this video popped out and it was nice to see about the game again. It has progressed A LOT. It has actually multiplayer now, if only I had friends to play with but its nice.
it's definitely fun with friends. I had one I played with but not really any more. if you can convince a friend to try it I think you'd love it. and yea it's advanced A LOT. What you saw in this is the tiniest fraction of what's been added and it's still being developed

I love this game. Been playing it more than a year now. You can turn the animal generation down to easy, btw, until you are used to it. once you get the hang of how they work, you can turn it back up again without having to make a new world. Same for hunters. you can change what they do and whether they spawn at all and turn it all back on again. I found I had to do that for my friend I was playing with because she died every few steps at the start lol. so basically you can make your own progression of difficulty by messing with the world settings :)
Edit: How on earth did you manage to set those walls down at those crazy angles lol. I've never seen them not snap in place before O.O. You also shouldn't be able to place things fully inside each other like that. I feel like you might be a bit bugged and it's one of the strangest bugs I've seen. Or maybe there's some setting that got changed somewhere? but it's hilarious to see lol

You gotta cut them some slack somewhere. ColdGames is a single person Developer. For a game like this to go for as long as it did (even still going strong), with only one person is a miracle of dedication.

Really, the thing that they need to change, is how often you need to eat, which would fix most of the issues with the game. Even increasing ammo drops a little would be nice too. Doesn't make sense for an ai to be shooting you for 30 minutes straight, but drops no ammo.

Actually the sunset is probably one of the realistic ones I've seen for a survival game for the northern Canada I live in the Adirondacks and I get too see the northern lights and sunset like that with the red orange and pink or sometimes even purple

Among all the things I didn't like in this game, the most frustrating is the respawn on the opposite of the map every time I died. And I died a lot! But why does it have to be so far away from wherever you died?

I do not understand this. your videos are usually honest. This might be the only video i ve watched of you taking the piss out of a game. In every other survival game you try ,you always put at least an effort to entertain the game and the idea of each game. Here you are just making fun of it without realising it is one person developing the game and if you gave it some attention like you did with other titles you would enjoy it too. Perhaps the best survival game out there no zombies no bs.. But i think you did it dirty for no reason whatsoever...

Game is definitely one of the better survival games once you figure out a few basics. I'm in a discord with about 150ish people that's strictly survival games and they name the channel for this game "Dark Souls Survival". haha, not far off.
