I am a very first time user/owner of ANY Nikon product and I was gifted a D7100 camera with 5 lenses... This 50mm is absolutely amazing and "nifty 50" is an understatement to me lol. This is more like a federal requirement 50 HAHAHA. I have the Tamrom 28-75mm and it does not compare so I carry this one. I also have a fully manual nikkor 50 that obliterates the other lens with this one. As a first time owner of Nikkon let alone this lens to boot, I want anything D series of this lens lol. It's amazing and I think commercially for my work this will make me a great ton of money.
Hi AP Dallas Photos! Thank you very much for your feedback. You are absolutely right that this is a great lens. Best of luck to you with your photography!
Thanks for this video! I've been shooting with this nifty fifty lens on a fullframe Nikon D750 for years and LOVE the quality images! Again, thank you...
I own every version of the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 F mount lens and I feel from decades of shooting these lenses that the D series version resolves a bit better and is sharper than those made before and after.
Another benefit of the D Type lens is that, unlike the G Type lens, the D lens will auto focus on auto focus film cameras like the F4s AND can be used in the fully Manual mode with the Aperture ring. Because I shoot both film and digital cameras, I am now collecting "like new" used Nikkor D type lenses for all of my Nikon cameras from my old Nikon F, F2AS, F4s, to my D70. D80, D600 and D850.
Great video Tom! The clarity on those sample images is just stunning, we forget really quick that lenses made 20 years ago are still up to par for 99% of us 99% of the time. Now you should prepare a shootout between all the 50's Nikon made for DSRLs FX (50mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8D, 50mm 1.4G, 50mm 1.4D, 50mm 1.2 Noct) and see how they perform compared to each other, that would be interesting although realistically only from a technical point of view since this review has shown, that they're all probably more than good enough for most situations. Keep up the good work!
Hi Kevin! Thank you for this idea. I'd love to compare all of those lenses but I don't own all of them. One day I hope to test them all, though! And, yes, you are absolutely right about the older lenses being absolutely wonderful. Cheers!
Hi B3NN! I'm quite certain you're going to like this fine lens. It will not have a motor inside so with D3400 you can only use manual focusing. Kind regards!
Hi! Thank you for asking. Given the choice between the Nikon AF-S F/1.8 G and the Nikon AF F/1.8 D, most people would probably prefer the former because it has a focus motor and is optically a little bit superior. The latter will only autofocus if your camera has a motor in the body. Both lenses will work with both crop sensor and full-frame cameras. Kind regards!
Hi! Thanks for asking. The AF doe not work with the D50. This is because neither the camera nor the lens has the AF motor. However, with manual focusing the lens will still work very well with the D50, Cheers!
I have a nikon d3400 and was wondering if you have any suggestion for a good lens to use for fitness videos (vertical and horizontal) for steady video on tripod but gives a cinematic look
Hi Ihman! Thank you for asking. For fitness videos indoors you probably need a relatively wide angle lens and you want auto focusing. You fan use both the DX and FX line of lenses on this camera. You may want to consider AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G. This is a full frame lens and will work equally well with full frame and your D3400. Kind regards!
Hello there! I don't expect you to reply to my comment to your more than one year old video, but if you happen to see it, I want to tell you that I got this lens for my d3500 and at open aperture it does not seem to focus on infinity. The depth of field is all messed up and even when I try to focus closer dostances it's always a bit off. Any idea whether it's the camera or the lens with the problem?
Hi Măgulean! Thank you for asking. This lens and this camera are optically compatible but autofocus is not possible since neither the camera nor the lens has a motor. How do you determine that the lens doesn't focus properly? Before I can help you better please confirm that the lens focuses to infinity at every F-stop value other than the smallest? A possible problem could be an aperture mechanism issue or aperture blades sticking. Or it could be a lens calibration issue. Can you do this aperture test: Set the lens to different aperture values and observe if the focus-to-infinity issue persists. Try to pinpoint the exact F-stop where you see issues. It's also a good idea to clean the lens contacts and update camera firmware. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo yes, so I've tried focusing on different focal lengths, at it seems to have a sweet spot between about 1 and 8 meters at max aperture. Then, between 8 meters and infinity, it again does not focus, under about 30 meters and, of course, if the aperture is fully open, it won't be sharp. I can fix that by closing the aperture, but then I won't get as much light and the sole reason I wanted this lens was it's very large aperture (that I guess I could have gotten from any other more fitting lens, but the "nifty fifty is the nifty fifty") Thank you a lot for your help, you have my like and subscribe. I have this lense in my D7200. If you're not doing portrait, just put this on permanent f2.8 indoors and f4 outdoors then you have a very sharp and fast lense for any shot. The noise level is not really loud as what people are saying unless you came from an AF-S then you can unhear it but really not an issue for the price.
Hi! Thank you for your message. Please confirm that the lens doesn't work because you cannot focus with it (and not because the metering is wrong). The D5200 does not have autofocus motor and the lens doesn't have it either. You can only focus manually with this lens when using the D5200. Kind regards!
Hi! thank you for asking. Since the D5100 does not have built-in autofocus motor the lens could be used only with manual focusing. Autofocus is not possible because the lens does not have a motor. Hi! Thank you for asking. It is best to search for this lens in used photography equipment sites online, or the large global distributors such as Ebay or Amazon. I just checked ebay.com and they had several of this lens available. I hope this helps. Kind regards!
Love this lens, I think this is the best value lens ever made. Photo is sharp, and you get a fast lens for an affordable price. Its G cousin is not an affordable lens. Best of all this lens is made tough. Its the kind of lens you need to bring for hiking.
@@tom_photo yeah but i have to highlight though this lens autofocus dont work with mirrorless camera or camera without the screwdrive motor on the body. The fact that modern cameras doesnt have the autofocus motor on the body itself is a mystery to me, as putting the motor on the lens will increase the price of the lens significantly and the lens will be less durable as if you drop the lens, you could damage the autofocus motor on the lens. Also the lens motor could also get damaged by mishandling the lens. Theres less occurance of that when using a camera body with its own motor.
@@RiemsAI Hi! Yes, and if the motor is in the camera body then you only need one motor for all of your lenses and in end the entire setup will be cheaper. Cheers!
Hi 3 A.M.! Thank you for asking. This is a great all around lens and will work well for architecture, too. The effective focal length will depend of whether you use it with full frame or crop sensor camera. With crop sensor it might be too narrow for interiors. But it will depend on what and how you photograph. Please keep in mind that it has no motor inside, so if your camera body doesn't have it either then you need to focus manually. Kind regards!
Hi! Thank you for asking. The D700 has a motor so auto focus should work. If it does not, most likely some settings are not optimal. Please check that the auto focus switch is set to the AF position (and not MF). The next thing to try is to reset the camera settings and make sure that camera firmware is up to date. Let me know if this helped. I'll be happy to help you figure this out. Kind regards!

If you're not doing portrait, just put this on permanent f2.8 indoors and f4 outdoors then you have a very sharp and fast lense for any shot.
The noise level is not really loud as what people are saying unless you came from an AF-S then you can unhear it but really not an issue for the price.
Hi Alexis! Thank you very much for watching and for the tips. This is a very nice lens, indeed. Kind regards!
i tried it on my D5200 the camera works only if i set apperture to f4. other than that it wont shoot. how can i fix this?
Hi! Thank you for your message. Please confirm that the lens doesn't work because you cannot focus with it (and not because the metering is wrong). The D5200 does not have autofocus motor and the lens doesn't have it either. You can only focus manually with this lens when using the D5200. Kind regards!
Does it work with Nikon d5100
Hi! thank you for asking. Since the D5100 does not have built-in autofocus motor the lens could be used only with manual focusing. Autofocus is not possible because the lens does not have a motor. If you need a similar lens with a motor please consider Nikkor AF-S F/1.8 G as a great alternative: ua-cam.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/v-deo.html . Kind regards!
Would this work with nikon D750
Hi! Thank you for asking. Yes, this lens will work very well with the D750. I've used it with the D610 and the results are great. Kind regards!
@@tom_photo Thank you!🙏
@@gam2925 You're most welcome. Best of luck to you with this lens!
have this fixed lens, but for the Nikon D3400 body, why can't the aperture be read on the camera?
Hi! Thank you for asking. Please make sure that you have set the aperture to F22. Then it should work. Kind regards!
@@tom_photoI have tried but can't

@@robypreset9459 Hi! Could you, please, clarify if you cannot switch to F22 or switching to F22 won't make it work?
@@tom_photoI have changed it to F22 but it doesn't read on the camera
@@robypreset9459 I always use my Nikkor AF-S F/1.8 G lens with D3400. The Nikkor AF F/1.8 D is unfortunately not compatible with D3400. You can use it in manual mode but the lens and body will not communicate properly. This also applies to changing the aperture via camera body. You'll want the G version of this lens for the D3400. Kind regards!
Sir , where can I get 50 mm f/ 1.8 D nikon lens , as it is unavailable in india. Please help me to get this lens .
Hi! Yes, absolutely, this is a very nice small lens for hiking. It will make your camera small and portable. Thank you very much for watching!
Cheers!
Can i use this lens for architectural photography?
Thank you tom ❤️
@@zeroanglefilms You're very welcome!
A great Lens - I would still be using it if it AF on the Z bodies - I like the feel of the Ais lenses better .. 🦘
Hi Roy! Thank you for your feedback, I agree with you. Kind regards!
I use this lens on D700, but auto focus doesn't work. Can you teach me.
@@tom_photo Thank you, thank you for helping, do you mean Rotate the focus-mode selector outside the camera to AF? but i don't see it on d700.
Sorry as English is not my native language so I don't know if my description is clear.
@@rosesarered999h Hi! When you look at the camera so that the lens is facing you there is a focus mode button (a small black lever) on the bottom right of the camera body, diagonally under the lens. Please check that this is set to automatic and not manual. Kind regards!
Works well with d7200
Hi K S! Indeed, Nikon D7200 has a focus motor in the body and so this lens will work well with it. Kind regards!
Will it work on my D5300?
Hi Lancelot! Yes, it will work with your camera but only with manual focusing. Neither the camera nor the lens has a motor, so autofocus will not work. Kind regards!
hi which mount adapter do i have to use in canon m50
Hi Mohammed! You'd need to convert Canon EF-M mount of your camera to Nikon F-mount. Kind regards!
will this lens work on nikon D5600 ?
Hi! Thank you for asking. Optically speaking this lens will work very well. Since it does not have a motor and the D5600 does not have a motor you can use it only in the manual mode. On the other hand the Nikon AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G has the auto focus motor: ua-cam.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/v-deo.html . Kind regards!

will it work on Nikon D3000 ?
Hi GR4NDtrust ! Since it does not have a motor it will only work with manual focusing on D3000. For D3000 I'd therefore recommend Nikkor AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G: ua-cam.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/v-deo.html . In this video I use it with D3400. Kind regards!
I used it on a D40 (so manual focus only, just like on a D3000) and later on on a D90 and a D7100 and some mirrorrless bodies with an adapter for many years, and I was very happy with it. My copy didn't have the stickiness issue on the focus ring.
EDIT: wide open it has some very noticable chromatic aberration. You can cancel it out in post processing, but it's an issue you need to be aware of.
@@mjak993 Hi! Thank you very much for your input! It's a nice lens, indeed. I'd say that the chromatic aberration is there but it's not too bad. Kind regards!
Can i use it with nikon z50 ??
Hi Maia! Thank you for asking. To use your Z-mount camera with this F-mount lens you'd need an adapter. I copying a link here for you: www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/products-and-innovation/nikon-z-series-mount-adapter-ftz.html#:~:text=360%20F%2Dmount%20lenses%20in,Approx. Kind regards!

Hello i tried using this lense with my nikon d5300 but it is not allowing me to click pictures on the f2.8 setting ? Only able to shoot on f22 can you please help me out here ?
Hi! Thanks you for asking. Sure, I can help you. You have locked your lens at position F22. Find the small switch next to the aperture ring and unlock it (push it in the up direction). You'll want to lock this switch at F22 when you want the camera body to control your F-stop. Kind regards!

Autofocus is available with AF-S and AF-I lenses.
Autofocus is not available with other type G and D lenses, AF lenses (IX NIKKOR and lenses for the F3AF are not supported) and AI-P lenses.
Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but Exposure Meter does not Function; Electronic Rangefinder can be used if Maximum Aperture is f/5.6 or faster.

I don't mind manual focus, but can I change aperture in camera on D3500?
Hi Will! Thank you very much for watching. The D3500 is unable to control the aperture via camera body with this lens. Kind regards!
In MSW reit now just plus §30 and we can get 1.4 D AF version

If you need a 50 mm prime that will also focus automatically then a good option is Nikkor AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G: ua-cam.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/v-deo.html . Kind regards!
