- HEY! Is the el Cheapo plasticy Nikon 50mm 1.8G good enough for prime time? Or should you get the new Z-mount 50mm 1.8S? That is the question we try to answer.

“We don’t sniff lenses on this channel…”
😂😂😂😂
I got you😂
Sold my old 35mm and 50mm G's and bought myself the 50mm S. I also own the 85mm S and all I can say is that these new S-line lenses are amazing.
They ARE!!
Can I use these new s lenses on my nikon d5200??
@@bigbluerios Nope.
@@MMarin1983 cheapo lens I go then. In need of 85mm 1.8g and 50mm 1.8g for graduation pics . Let's see what happens. Thx for the response
@@bigbluerios F-mount lenses are by no means bad. You will get plenty of bang for the buck if you get those two.
Man I’m so happy to see you do Nikon reviews! I love your videos so much and you even persuaded me to go Fuji but that just didn’t feel right for me as a long time Nikon shooter. I’m probably going for a Z sometime soon.
same here; I wasn't watching for awhile but glad to see this funny guy with informative reviews on the Nikon system.
This video is a perfect illustration of the principle "sharpness is not everything" - the G-lens color rendition is so much better, so 3-dimensional, contrasts just awesome... when you compare tnem like that one by one this difference is really obvious
Thinking of going down the Z series route so this was really helpful as well as entertaining. Thanks.
Great video, as always! Love my 50 1.8 S. Could have been a bit smaller, but the forthcoming 40 f2 will scratch that itch, especially on the Zfc.
4 years ago i started my XT20 (my first fuji system) journey with you (i am one of your first hundred subscribers). on the other hand, i am a nikon lover. pretty much of all i have was all invested in nikon from my D3s to nikon Z6, nice to know that i hit on the right channel!!
Nikon Z6 image quality is fantastic.
Thanks for the great video, i adapt the 135 2.8 ais to the Nikon z6ii, and that film look from Nikon is amazing.
I love your humor. My wife is asking what I’m laughing at.
Dude your entertaining to watch, I'm really enjoying your channel 👍
Tried two 50 G, 1.8 & 1.4 on Z CameraS, yes 2 of of them. The 18 was very sharp and I like it better than numerous faster 50. Downside is AF “hunts” in low light indoors. Takes 1 to 2 sec to focus. They go to minimum, then infinity, then come back to focus. 40 2.8 S is bargain of the Century. Or get the Nikon Z.
There's no pain changing lenses with the adapter... You just change the lens...
The FTZ2 is a miracle machine. I will likely just stay with my AF-S lenses. The 55-200mm VR has been given a new kease on life on my Z30
Just love the results of the cheep lens and would take that over the new one, as it would enable me using older lenses would give me great results and more kit - green photography - recycle where you can snd save the pennies to print your favourite pics in a book or for a frame to hang on the wall .
Loved the video
Wondering if you tried the 50mm 1.8D or if it’s even possible.
Are you switching to Nikon for your pro work? Not sure if you covered that in a different video. I try to watch all your stuff even if it's not a topic for me. Thank you for all your content.
For all my pro portrait sessions yes. Not sure about receptions yet.
Buen Video Omar ! Gracias y felicitaciones .
That 50mm 1.8S is an amazing value. It’s just as sharp as the $2k+ 50mm 1.2S. I own both and contemplating selling the 1.2 to buy a different focal length. The z6ii handles so well in low light I don’t think the 1.2 is required but that’s just my experience and the way I shoot.
I still have a 50mm F1.4g. I might only get 3 Nikon Z lenses to start.
Thank you sir. I really need this information
The S glass look like the are really F glass but with longer barrels. Canon made a short 50mm I was kinda hoping Nikon did as well but its years later and here we are.
Im getting the Z40mm F2.0, far cheaper than the 50mm 1.8 which I have had. But I will have the Z24-70 F4.0 which is sharp too
Loved it, thank you!
I am really biased to a Nikon 50 mm Z mount since I don't have the G. But, what about the Viltrox? have you reviewed those?
Great video! I love the 50mm 1.8
Magic lens
I have the ftz and dslr 50 mm 1.8..debating if I sld get the z 50 mm to match my new z 6ii .I do alot protraits/lifestyle.
I have a Fuji xt-3 that I love but I’m tempted by the z6ii. I like the bokeh on full frame cameras that you just can’t get on a cropped sensor. But the xt3 is so compact it’s perfect for street photography. After watching this video I’m more confused about which way to go. Maybe I need both?
I go Fujifilm for a lightweight kit that gives incredible images. You can get this look with the 56mm, 90, 50mm 1.0. But yes. It’s easier with full frame, especially when shooting wider lenses. Maybe you should rent one.
@@ogonzilla have you tried Luminar AI? It creates a mask on the person or subject in the foreground and blurs everything else to create bokeh. I tried it and it’s very convincing. Now I don’t need to buy an expensive lens 😀
But Omar, I says, what if I have…. A 50/1.4g, 50/1.2Ai-s, 50/1.4NAi that’s been Ai’d, a 50/2, and…. Those are just my 50s 😅😸
Looking at the balls because the picture isn’t interesting. Love it.
Nice watch ... what it it ?
Thanks Seiko mini turtle
I hope they'll make a nifty fifty like Canon did for their mirrorless cameras.
I also like adapting G lenses to my Z6 and I don't sniff camera and lenses too. 😂📸 ❤️🇵🇭
I am surprised that Nikon has not lent you zfc??
I'd love to check it out.
I like how you explain things….sports with 50mm what’s wrong with you. 😂😂😂😂
S in nikkor line stands for Sexy, so obviously you should get the S one, you don't want to be (G)ross...
Great channel. But being Canadian, every time he says “zee” it sends a shiver down my spine. So wrong, only in America.
Omar, look under the desk I think you have lost your contrast 😁
Thanks for the video! What's the cool looking diver's watch you are wearing? :D
Seiko mini PADI turtle.
Loser stay humble rich guy.
please be careful if you start sniffing the lens, you will start miss-focusing...
Ouch hahah
LOL!
😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahahaha
🤣👍
you really have to watch out with those plastic fumes
From what i’ve heard/read, it seems like every Z-mount lens released so far is pretty incredible.
Definitely incredible!
First! 👍
Lol
Your fast Friday’s with the Nikon system would also be welcome 👌😆
With all this Nikon coverage, I'm sending everyone your way.
@@ogonzilla hahaha!! 👍
you should get a Nikon' 50mm 1.2 AIS and adapted to the Z6, should be interesting.
I don't get why people don't like the new Z lenses (not all of them are S lenses, those are the premium lenses). I really like that they're not overstated or have all kind of weird writings and rings. They're not drawing any attention.
I do find them attractive, and they match the cameras. I wish they were smaller, but apparently it’s not possible.
Not having any old Nikon glass, I opted to save a few bucks when I got my Z6 II and didn't get the FTZ. I have been really loving my z 50 1.8, z 105 2.8 macro and z 20mm 1.8. I really can't be happier....or could I. :D I have been debating getting a FTZ to try out some of the 'classic' old glass. For now....just living the Z life. Thanks for your continues wonderful content Omar!
Those are three winners you have!
Yeah, really has me in a comfortable place not wanting more. First time in a long time.
Try z 40 2 .
How refreshing. Love that you don't push all the "newest" and greatest and shame people for not buying the most expensive glass. I'll be watching more videos!
I really like the way the older G lenses render. I have the 50 1.4G and the colors are superb. I cant match it with the Z lens, its more than a white balance difference. Skin tones are beautiful, and you can find them used for $225-250. Its downfall is the focus is terrible 8( But its still worth it. The 70-300 afp is a fantastic all around lens too. Focus is silent and fast.
DUDE I literally dont watch any other video on photography except yours lol. Youre just so cool, i bought the nikon zii (from d750) Thanks to your channel. I am poor and do not have the money but i saved for it and worked hard to get it and i wish hope to make the same photos as you!
You’re right-the 50mm g lens is amazing. I have it on my new Z fc (gorgeous camera!) and an 85 1.8 s on my z6 II, and for giggles, shot portraits with both kits simultaneously. And honestly, the photos are equally amazing, g and s lenses. I thought I’d sell the 50mm 1.8g eventually, but I might just keep it.
I liked the Nikon 50mm 1.8D more than the G version. The D version was noisy and slow-ish but the images it produced were amazing with character I liked. To bad I sold it for Fuji. The only regret of selling my Nikon stuff. Fuji is amazing with more different lenses.
Why not just put the F lens on a D700? Save a whole bunch of $$$$.
Either way you slice it, there is no advantage in going mirrorless as far as weight and compactness. The Z6II with the G lens and adapter is exactly the same weight as the D750 and the 50mm G lens (1026 grams). Give me the digital version (full frame) of the Nikon FE or FM with old-style compact lenses. I think that's what us hobbyists want (IMHO).
I have this lens and I completely love its sharpness. It’s so satisfying to see all the light going in at 1.8 🤩. There is nothing to complain about it and its totally worth the investment. I use it with my z6 and its just a beast.
Man I have a love hate relationship with the 50mm z 1.8s. It is sharp and the clarity is amazing. It’s almost too perfect. So perfect that when I use other glass I miss that sharpness. When I go “artsy “ with the voightlander 58mm f1.4 or the voightlander 40mm f1.4, although I LOVE the rendering of both those lenses I miss the crispiness of 50z. The 50z lacks a bit of character. I would never ditch it there is something about the lens I love and it spoils you even when I go artsy. 1st world problems lol. I did buy the ftz adapter with the 85mm f1.4g and wow. Great lens and the ftz is fantastic. It also sends exif data to the camera when I use the voightlander 58mm on it as well as allowing me to use in camera aperture adjustment. I’m digging it. I’m going to get some more g series glass. Next up is the 35mm f1.8g. I can’t see myself paying the premium for the 35mm z. It’s too big as well. Anyhow like you Omar I’m a Fuji shooter but have ventured into the z system and loving it. You’re so right about that grip. It’s awesome. First love is Fuji (I have the XT-3 and the gfx 50R) but for paid work I can see myself using mostly Nikon. So many awesome choices these days
Well said. Totally agree. For me it's the Sigma 50mm 1.4 art but it would've complicated this video.
If you like character and film style , you’d be in a treat with 58 1.4 G . This lens is for people photo only
I had both and finally sold the G. I never used it much before, but I really love the S version. I am keeping my 85 G, a much better lens than the 50. I also kept and frequently use both the 35mm 1.4 and 24mm 1.4 Sigma Art lenses. I am happy to adapt any of those lenses on my Z bodies. Fantastic lenses to adapt
Thanks Omar, I started sniffing my lenses and have to say Nikkor 55 micro smells quite nice. Also Pentacon 50 1.8 with Fuji adapter. Goes well with XT2 grip. Now I can`t decide!
Nikon's 55mm micros AI or AIS lenses are legends. Super sharp.
Nikon Z 50mm 1.2 is the absolute PINNACLE!!!!! Try it you will never look back!!! Incredible detail I low light bar none! Color rendition & the details into the shadows of the face present like no other!!!!
I agree! Amazing quality with an extreme separation
Don't be CHEAP!
If you decided to get into Nikon's Z system why use old adapted glass?
If you really want the Z system then you know the Z lenses are the way to go.
Z lenses (specially the prime lenses) give you the clarity, focus, sharpness and resolution you want.
That is why you elect to upgrade to Z's.
That's my opinion.
Great video. I have the z9 and the 1.9 50 mm D the lens won’t auto focus only manually. Researched nothing seems to work. Any ideas please.
Old G lenses works very nice with Z system but it's worth it only if you already have this lenses at home...In my case I must buy FTZ adapter and 50mm G lens and actually there are no difference in price between this two... and native is still better to have.
I guess for video you can tell even less assuming you have locked focus so don't need the stepless motor
Omar - you are a witty and entertaining fellow. I think you analysis was very good of the differences between the 50 1.8G and the 50 1.8 S lens and why one might choose on over the other. I would add a couple points:
First, the 50 1.8 S lens is likely the best 50 1.8 lens made (by any manufacturer) for under 2-3K and it is around $500. It competes head to head with Zeiss lenses that are north of $3k, so if someone has the $500 for this lens, it is likely the best bang for the buck in lens purchases period - certainly one of the best. This takes nothing away from the 50 1.8 G if someone has it and likes it, and it was a good lens for its price point, but the 50 1.8 S is definitively the better lens in every way, so if someone can afford it they should get it.
Secondly and this builds on the last point, the 50 1.8 S is hands down the better video lens. I know that you were reviewing based on still shooting only, and that is valid, but for those that want the most out of their Z cameras, video should be considered. In this case, the 50 1.8 S lens has virually silent AF whereas the 1.8 G lens is very noisy when it focuses (on video), and more importantly, the 50 1.8 S has NO focus breathing at all. It is truly astounding. The engineering that was put into this lens is staggering. It is the sharpest 50 1.8 I've seen, and the research confirms this comparing it to $3+K Zeiss lenses, it has incredible edge to edge sharpness - something that the G lenses cannot obtain due to the greater flange distance (still true on the FTZ adaptor), and finally zero focus breathing - compare this to Canon's new RF 50 1.8 - which is a great lens for stills and is inexpensive only $199 (to Canon's credit), but it focus breathes terribly making it a less than optimal choice for video.
That all said, as you have pointed out, the FTZ adaptor is pretty amazing. I still use my 58 1.4 G lens and my 105 1.4 E lens with the FTZ adaptor and both of these lenses are actually better on the Z cameras than they ever were on the DSLR's. The IQ is equally good as it ever was, but now both lenses have focusing points across the frame allowing for better/easier composition acquisition, and they now have 3 axis image stabilization whereas before on the DSLR's they had none. I will likely never get rid of these lenses - I enjoy them more than ever now on the Z cameras than I did before native to DSLR.
In particular the 105 1.4 E lens is a beast of a lens with a very special output that is not replicated in other lenses - it is probably the best portrait lens that Nikon has ever made next to the 200mm f/2 lens but that beast is over $5k. Given that own this lens, and based on your comments when holding it in this video, I am guessing that you feel the same way.
I look forward to your video on the subject :)

Thanks so much for your insight. Definitely enjoying learning what Nikon has to offer.
Man get the 1.2 and be blown away! I uploaded some experience on the z7ii here ua-cam.com/video/YXvNYcXHTbk/v-deo.html . Realy though, I consume more calories to carry this lens around.
Omar if you really are 50ish guy you need to try nikon 58mm 1.4G it is so amazing, Samhurd's fav too when he was using nikon.
Spend the money, buy the 1.8s, it is Fantastic. Best lens you can buy period.
Nikon Lover reviews the 50mm 1.8G & S - awesome, Nikon Lover is watching...😄
Omar, do yourself a favor and pick up an old Nikkor 50mm 1.4 manual lens. Clinical? no way. creamy.....
Okay i saw this video second time and must say it is one of the funniest here! P.S. of coz i have cheepo 50 1.8g )))
Yes, I'm a cheapskate! Fully admitting it proudly! Got a used D750 with a bunch of used lenses and loving it. Looked up the MTF of my F 50mm f/1.8 G, the Z 50mm f/1.8 S and the Z 40mm/2. Even that 40mm is better than my lens if the charts are to be taken at face value. So if I go Z (which might be in a year or so because I'm cheap) I might get that one.
Personally I never really loved the look of Nikon's G lens designs but really love the understated clean design of the new Z glass. Also don't yell at me - I have two FTZ adapters. One is permanently bolted to my 85/1.4G and the other to the Sigma 35 ART. :)
Haha...I may do the same. I was just joking...
I think u r a patient of neurology department. Don't worry next time more aggressive should make ur way easy.
If you are zooming to see the bokeh balls quality, the picture might not be interesting-said a wise man
Debating on switching to Fuji XT4 from my old Nikon D300. If I stick with Nikon and go z6 II, will my Nikon 50 and 85mm 1.8 D lenses work with the adapter?
No, AF-D lenses don't autofocus with FTZ.
FWIW, the Nikkor AF-S 35mm f/1.8G does NOT have a plastic lens mount. I own one and am looking at it right now. The mount is typical Nikon chrome-plated brass.
that story about dx 35mm
Did I miss your street photography 105mm 1.4E video??
I hate purple fringing (chromatic aberration) even if I can fix it.
Please have a review comparing 50mm 1.8S lens with Sigma Art HSM 1.4 lens for Nikon regarding autofocus, sharpness, bokeh, etc. Thanks
art is top
I've been using vintage manual focus lenses exclusively for a few years now. Try adapting some vintage Nikon lenses.
I thought this was vintage. 😉
Same here. Almost all of my D lenses are gone, just lovely non Ai, Ai and Ai-S lenses left to be used for the next decades.
My only Autofocus lenses in use are the Fujinon/Haselblad HC lenses for the H system.
Third system is Leica M with vintage Leitz glass.
I am still using my Nikkor 50mm f1.8 AF-D lens.
Are you wearing a Pepsi bezel Seiko Omar
I have a. Z6 and I put Leica M lenses and its amazing!!!!
These lenses are night-and-day different - you must be blind!
Nikon 50mm 1.8G is now $216 :( , the new new is $596
You can’t beat the physics. DSLR vs Mirrorless is a fabulous GAS marketing initiative.
Right on the head..why not marked as 50 F.18 Z and ZS
what about the sigma 1.4 50mm ? i want that combo but there are not reviews
lol I guess that's a recommendation for `el cheapo`.
You make me laugh ,thanku You!! , I love your work on YT :)
How does 50 1.8s handles on Zf body?
Nikon 50mm 1.8g isn't sharp until stopped down to f4 on my d850. I've tried two different samples with the same conclusion. Out of all the 1.8g Nikon lenses, I found the 50mm 1.8g to be most disappointing. Love my 85mm 1.8g and 35mm 1.8g.
The 1.8 AI-S and D versions are better IMHO.
@@bradl2636 Never used the AI-S, but the G was optically better than D when I had both on my D800. I got rid of my D before trying it on the D850.
Good to know thanks, 👍
Watching this again as I'm on the cusp of laying down the credit card to purchase the S 50mm 1.8. Thanks again for your review.
I use it over the sigma now
"S" for sexy.... Didn't you get the memo?
Very Human video Merry Christmas!
"We don't sniff lenses on this channel" hahaha
"filmic," is that a word? 🤣
I have the old and the new...the new 50mm is insanely good. One of the things I don't like about the adapted lenses is the drop in MP when using adapted G lenses. The new 50mm is also soooo quiet! That quiet is really great for recording video as sometimes the lens focusing can be picked up by your mic (if not off camera). The 50mm S is definitely a fantastic lens. :)
What do you mean by the drop of MP ?
@@fthprodphoto-video5357 when you use a dx lens adapted with the FTZ on the Z6II you drop to like 10MP as I understand it.
Figures that this video would land just as I’m trying to talk myself out of a 50mm Z lens. It was always going to be a losing battle, I guess…
I lied. Get the S!!!! Lol
@@ogonzilla Lol well it is going to happen eventually, just a matter of timing
I love my old 50mm f/1.8G, in fact, I think it's better in some ways than my new Canon RF 50mm f/1.8. The 50 1.8 is actually a good sports lens, indoor sports, basketball in a high school gym with weak lights, that is where a 50 1.8 shines for sports, volleyball too. That said, I was impressed by the improved sharpness from the S. Oh, let's talk about S. I think S is Nikon's Copy of putting a letter on their top-line lenses, kind of like like Canon put an L on their's to denote that. So, all the Nikon Z mount lenses are Z but only the best get that S designation. I always enjoy your videos, Omar.
50mm 1.8 should be great for indoor sports. I'm considering getting the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 for CrossFit/Olympic weightlifting/gym shots.
Again sir, far more advanced than I! However, watching you always increases my general knowledge of the topic! Thank you!
Keep at it!!
