Nikons without AF motors / Nikons that can only autofocus with the 50mm f/1.8G and NOT the 50mm f/1.8D: D40, D60, D3xxx, D5xxx.
Informative. I have both. Would say that 1.8D is significantly better for b&w, particularly on film (haven’t done any proper testing, opinion just based on results).
I've been using the 1.8D for film a lot lately and image quality aside, I just think that the 1.8D is a more flexible option for Nikon film shooters or those adapting the lens on other manufacturer's camera bodies. Having the aperture ring on the barrel just makes it usable on more bodies.
Good job on the review. The D seems to have slightly more contrast and slightly less barrel distortion in your samples. I’ve owned both and ended up keeping the D version because my Nikon bodies had focus motors and I don’t shoot video. I think if you have a consumer camera that doesn’t have an af motor or if you need the quieter af the G version is the better option.
The D has an aperture ring that I prefer and the colors seem to be warmer with less contrast. Highlights don't seem to be as washed out with the D version. I prefer the D for those reasons.
I also noticed the exposure difference between the two. Looks like maybe the G would perform better in low light conditions slightly. When I look at your images it looks like the colors on the D are more saturated and the micro contrast is better. In summary I think your conclusion is right on.
Like I said, light transmission could’ve been lighter/darker with one of these lenses just in this instance. There is no way of telling if one is transmitting more light without testing multiple of the same lens.
I got the 1.8d brand new because it's a lot cheaper and it has warranty. It's plasticky but I would say, after 3 days of use, it's actually sturdy! It's also tigh on the mount. I thought I would break lol. Also, I love the fact that I'm using it fully manual because I have a D3400. The lens is working perfectly but as a beginner, I should stop using F/1.8 because I'm still terrible at finding the right focus! It's always not about getting the shallowest depth of field, people!
Hey, I have a d3300 and I am thinking about the D version since it is so cheap. Do you find the manual focusing annoying? Does it cost you to miss shots? Any feedback is welcome :)
You'll only get as far as you put into it I suppose. There's plenty of potential but at the end of the day, it's the user not the lens. The lens is only a lens.
I just picked up a mint in the box 1.8D because I'm looking for manual lenses that I can use on my Nikon F3 as well as my F90 and N90s. Thanks for comparing the two. Helpful.
Thank you so much for a video that clearly explains the differences. I already have the 50mm 1.8D that I was using with my D3300; I was wondering if, since I bought the D750, I would need a better 50mm. As for the slightly different exposure between the two--that can be fixed in Lightroom. For now, I will just stick with what I have! : ) Thanks!
You're welcome! I would agree that if you already have the 1.8D, there is little point in getting the 1.8G. Save the money and use it for a little trip that could get you some interesting photos 👍
Nice video man! I just purchased the Sigma 18-35. A bit tired of the prime lens as I need to move my tripod for each shot I take. It becomes really cumbersome when I shoot outdoors during winter. Now I need to decide if I want to use it with my Sony A6300 with the MC-11 adapter or with my Panasonic G7 and metabones speed booster which is crazy expensive. What would you do?
Nowadays, I use primes almost exclusively for film and some street photography when I use digital. When I record videos, it's almost exclusively on the Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM. Zooms are definitely more convenient. As far as your situation with the Sigma 18-35, tough call but I would personally use it on the A6300. I would take the money savings. The a6300 has a better focusing system but the G7 doesn't overheat. There's pros and cons to both but I would be more comfortable having the a6300 as a main camera between the two.
I'm not sure why people are saying the D has better contrast, when the Contrast on the G looks quite a lot better. The D looks as if you took a picture with your mobile phone, where the lighting & contast on the G looks as if it's from a professional shoot.
The 1.8 D can be a little bit slower with AF, and shooting in the dark if there is any pointy lightsource, the inside of the lens will reflect that weird spots on your sensor. The G is more money, but it’s a better choice for me. The 1.8D has one benefit: it goes down to f22, while the G is only to f16. :)
I bought the D lens because it was cheaper and sharper. But also seems to have less distortion but more vignetting. The ‘exposure’ difference might actually be down to different coatings on the lenses perhaps.

I think the other lens that I use with the F100 is this one: amzn.to/3HvOju8 I sold the F100 some time ago but those should be the only two lenses that I used with it.
Beginner question here: if I have Nikon D3300 and I buy the D version and I use manual mode on my camera, it does focus right? I have a hard time understanding the focus part. Because without focus, it would be useles.to try and take a photo. So if I use manual mode, I will get a sharp focused image?
@@HaiTran hmmm, I think that I don't know very well what autofocus is then. I thought that is was the ability of the camera to just focus... by pressing the shutter of course. I will have to also study.this
It depends on what you need. The D800 and D810 clearly have more resolving power, so if this is what you need then the D610 is out. I personally own a D810, which was just about the best at the time of release. If the price is a concern, the D610 will likely be cheapest and D810 most expensive. If it were me, I'd buy the D810 but again, I have no reference to your situation.
I just bought the D lens for my D3500 nikon. I thought it would auto focus but I don't think it does. Is that correct? Is the G-lens the clear choice if I can't auto-focus with the D lens? Thanks for your help!
@@HaiTran Thank you! I guess I'm assuming it would be a clear choice that I would not want to manually focus. Maybe some photographers don't mind that challenge.
Thanks for this nice video. Currently deciding between these two( can not find $60 deal for 1.8D). Do U live around capitol hill, if so, can I meet and borrow the 50mm 1.8D for a try, I am a lil concerned the softness with Aperture 2.0 and 1.8. Also the flare issue.
Unfortunately, I don't go around Capitol Hill that much anymore. I won't be back in the Seattle until around January or so. If anything, you can just hit up the local Best Buy. The one in Tacoma had all the Nikon 50mm lenses the last time I went there. That's how I tested everything out.
My 1.8D doesn't work on any shooting mode but Manual. Is that typical? Whenever I try to use another shooting mode, I get an "incompatible lens" error.
First, the D3400 doesn't have an in body focusing motor so it won't be able to autofocus with the 1.8D. Second, try changing the aperture to f/22 and see if that allows you to change the aperture on the body. That's the only solution I would know of. Hopefully, that fixes your problem.
Is just me, or does the G feel cheap? I have the 35 mm AF-S and I just bought the 50 mm 1.8 G. The build quality seems poor, and my autofocus seems off, I have to override. Has anyone else had issues.

Good stuff. Thank-you for this.
You're welcome!
Well D version has better image contrast. I’d use it instead for that reason.
Yes, use the one that works best for you 👍
Can I use Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D on D7500 camera

I have D5300
what should i get?
I am not a pro so i usually shoot in Manual settings but Auto Focus
Look at the pinned comment. That should give you a good starting point for consideration.
So i guess the G
Thanks
You're welcome 👍
For nikon D5300 which one work better?
The 1.8G has autofocus function.
Thanks for reply. I will give that a try.
Good luck! 👍
My 1.8D doesn't work on any shooting mode but Manual. Is that typical? Whenever I try to use another shooting mode, I get an "incompatible lens" error.
Manual as in manual exposure or manual focus?
@@HaiTran Manual exposure
What body are you using?
@@HaiTran Sorry, I guess I could have been a bit more forthcoming with the information. I shoot with a D3400. Thank you for your help!
First, the D3400 doesn't have an in body focusing motor so it won't be able to autofocus with the 1.8D. Second, try changing the aperture to f/22 and see if that allows you to change the aperture on the body. That's the only solution I would know of. Hopefully, that fixes your problem.
I think the 1.8D has better micro-contrast, which might explain the difference why it feels darker.
It’s hard to go wrong with it 👍🏽
Bellissima recensione.
Thank you!
which one have the auto focus and manual focus i have a d3300
They both have auto and manual focus.
@@HaiTran well i like the g version but i will see what happens afterwards

Good Info Man
Glad the video helped you👍🏽
Thank you so much for this video.
You’re welcome!
In your presentation the D lens seemed to out perform the G lens The D lens had better focus.
Whatever works for your budget 👍🏽
Good job, very informative and correct!
Thanks a lot for watching 👍
will 50mm 1.8D work with nikon d70 well?
This goes over it

It will work fine. It all depends on the hands. 50 1.8D is enough to reveal your creativity. There is no point in overpaying.
Is just me, or does the G feel cheap? I have the 35 mm AF-S and I just bought the 50 mm 1.8 G. The build quality seems poor, and my autofocus seems off, I have to override. Has anyone else had issues.
Both lenses feel cheap and that's not unexpected since they are essentially the cheapest Nikon lenses available for purchase.
50mm Nikkor F/1.8D AF Prime Lens supports D3400?
It works, you just won't have autofocus.
will it work with nikon D3000?? please some one reply
