On the night of May 20, 2024, an urgent call set into motion a remarkable chain of events, leading to the life-saving surgery of 1-day-old Viyaan with a critical heart defect at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road.
Born in Goa, Viyaan showed signs of lower oxygen saturation and breathing difficulties shortly after birth, revealing Obstructed Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (Obstructed TAPVC) - a rare and dangerous congenital heart condition requiring immediate intervention.
Due to the urgency and lack of resources at the local hospital, the baby was airlifted to Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, where Dr. Devananda N S, Head & Consultant - Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery, performed a complex 5-hour procedure using deep hypothermic circulatory arrest to repair the TAPVC.
