  • Hey there, welcome back to our channel! Today we're going to tackle a common issue that many of us face with our HP OfficeJet 6978 printers - the fake paper jam. Now, you might be thinking, "What's a fake paper jam?" Well, it's when your printer displays an error message indicating a paper jam, even though there's no paper jammed in the printer. Frustrating, right? But don't worry, we've got you covered. In this video, we'll be showing you how to troubleshoot this problem and fix it for good.
We'll be taking you through the step-by-step process of identifying the different error messages that you might encounter, and how to properly read and understand them. We'll also be sharing some tips and tricks for servicing your printer and keeping it in good condition.
So, if you're tired of constantly dealing with the fake paper jam issue, stick around and let's get started. And don't forget, if this video doesn't solve your problem, we've got plenty of other videos on our channel that might be able to help. So, let's dive in and get this printer working like new again!
We fixed an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 with a fake paper jam. The printer complains about a paper jam in the automatic document feeder: “Document Loaded. The original is jammed in the document feeder. Open the cover, remove and reload the original, and then try again.” We discussed the procedure to troubleshoot problems and things to check for the error.

I spent a couple of hours going through all the worthless hp advice and dead links. I found this link, watched the video, did what he did, and my scarcely used printer works like a charm. Thank you so much. BTW, the screws are Torx 8. Also, your arm is in the way when showing the power cable you are plugging in. I just took every cable out and put it back in. The power cable connector doesn't 'click', there is no mechanism to do that. It is a very poor design choice by hp, if you ask me. Thanks again for your great videos, Kevin.

for anyone reading. Error 0x6100004a is also related to a suction pump that may be stuck or a burned-out pump motor. (pump stuck and the most common. disassemble and check)

I'm so glad you made this video. My aunt gave me this printer she used it a handful of times and it's like brand new. I'm a college student and any money I can say is great. I'm going to try this after my son's football game.

The disassembly part of the video was helpful but the reassembly goes too fast. Having said that however, thanks for making this video for all of us amateurs. Hopefully I will be able to get it re-assembled but if not will just purchase a new one.

I'm about to throw away my HP 6962.
I get the 0x6100004a error paper jam and the Ink Carriage is stuck to the far right side.
I disassembled and checked cable connectors but no go.
Should I just give up and throw this thing away?

hp envy photo 7855 is ready to be junked from someone. When I looked at the bottom of roller feed (paper pickup) isn’t moving and its gear doesn’t move anymore. I managed to move the feed roller down to stick to paper but gear aren’t moving. It detects that there’s a paper jammed but I don’t see it.
I did open up the printer to see if all cables were connected correctly but still same.

Hi Kevin, I have a office jet Pro 6978 that gives me an original doc jammed error and also makes this noise like gears spinning when you first turn it on and also when you acknowledge the jam pushing the ok button. Have checked all the cables and also for actual paper jam. Any thing else I can look at?

Sorry, while I could locate what seems to be the tabs behind the LCD panel, pressing them does not release the LCD panel and allow the cover to be fully removed. Unless Kevin guides me on this (at the critical moments, 3.19-3.27 in the video, his hand obscures the tabs) I will just buy a new printer and get on with my work. I will keep the old printer for some time in case Kevin responds and I can work on it for "experience".

Same issue here. But it felt like something more on the left front corner was holding the top cover down, that the LCD panel might come off with it. Still never got it all off. Just tried to check the connection of the cords from the little opening I could reach them. Very aggravating. He didn't mention either that the entire top piece was hooked in the middle of the panel piece we needed to remove. That was a bugger to get back synced together by myself.

Hello, (sep 2023): i took apart my HP 6978 w intent to replace the CMOS battery 2032 to see if that would make the printer print.. After changing the battery and putting the printer back together, the screen on the panel was blank with a white background but no menu.
I removed the new battery and replaced it with the old battery by taking the printer apart a 2nd time. Again, the panel displayed a blank white screen. I played w buttons and checked ribbon cable connections but nothing.
I replaced the old battery w another NEW 2032 battery by dismantling a 3rd time. After putting it back together, and making sure that the ribbon cables were correctly put back together, the panel is still displaying a white blank screen.
Is there a reset button on the back of the panel or anywhere after changing the CMOS battery? Any help from anybody would be appreciated. I can scan using the computer software and that works. If i try to print a report from the pc hp 6978 software, I a get a "device is busy" message. Apparently, the menu is hung up after connecting the power on. Any ideas?????

I am dealing with these very error messages right now. What I am running into when trying to follow the steps in the video is the screws... What kind (and size) of screw head is that? I have a respectable variety of bits/heads, but can't seem to find anything that fits those screws!

I have this exact problem right now on the exact printer but all cables looked fine inside. Is it the maintenance on the rolers and checked the switches all looked ok. I think my problem is that the print head doesn't want to move. But I get pretty much all the same errors. Paper jam and exact printer error plus the improper shutdown message even when shutting down via the button. Doing a semi full reset did not get rid of the fake paper jam. Going to keep at it. Printer only has a count of 702 pages.

I also did the factory settings reset JUST in case but no dice. Looks like I'll probably save myself the time and get a newer model. Might be something with one of the mechanical pieces in my case.
