I like the atmosphere in your room. A lot of free space, background music, professional tools, the amazing view outside, great designs, accurate perfect handwork... Love it!
Watching a table being born from a simple sketch on a piece of paper and taking shape into a fine young white oak table, ready for whatever adventures life outside might hold. Music at the end was emotional.
Beautiful piece. Beautiful video. All the background music is a vibe. Love hearing all the sounds around the shop - especially Gregory Porter. Thank you for sharing.
I've been wood working since I was little. Passed 2 years gotten serious about it. My jointery skills are 2 of 10. I wish I could apprentice with someone like you.
You popped up amongst suggestions for me, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did, because it was worth every second of it! I immediately subscribed to your channel. Hello! Love your videos and woodworking. I have two questions as I am a woodworker as well. What finish did you use for this table? And what design software do you use? I'd be eternally greatful for any sort of response. Keep up the fantastic work!
Your work is beautiful! Thanks for sharing the process, every video is a treat. I love your studio, it looks like a meditative retreat where you can take inspiration from the nature around you.
the dovetail cleat that's attached to the tabletop is not glued. he also used dovetails to attach the perpendicular pieces on the frame. it doesn't matter that those are glued because they are only like 80mm wide. Also, the pieces attached together have the grain oriented in the same direction so if they expand they expand together
@@hentaisan thanks! It's a bit confusing, at 12:45 there's no glue, but after the cut only seconds later there is some! Or at least it seems to be glue.
@@HerrKlaus1963 at 13:20 the inserts at the end of the dovetail grooves are glued, but those are just for aesthetics. The cleat is not glued. BTW, seeing as how the insert goes all the way to the cleat, I assume he left a gap between the insert and the cleat on the other side of the table. Unless he's doing this during winter
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

I love everything he does, but can you stand on it? I make stuff, and people bring it broken. I can see the shoe prints, but I ask anyways, "What happened." People say, "I don't know. It just broke." Then I point out the shoe prints, and say "It's a coffee table, not dance table." Then they get huffy, and say, "It should support the weight of a person." I then I point out there are at least three different shoe prints. They still want there money back. I say no. They ask how much it would cost to fix? I say, "I don't know know, how much does four ciderblocks cost?" I then tell the guy, "Give it to me, I'll what I can do." The guy wants it back by Monday. I call his wife's Cell phone, and tell her, that her husband broke her coffee table, and want me to fix it by Monday "Are you away for the Weekend?" She tells me she at her mothers, and ask me if I can fix her table. I say, "Sure I can.", but there Women she prints embeded in the table. I tell her I have an exact copy of the table, I give that one to her husband, and she can come and look at the table. The woman show up that Wednesday, and looks at the table. She tells it was her shoe that made the prints in the table. She thinks her husband had a girlfriend in the house, while she was away. I don't see the woman for about two months, and I call her phone. She shows up with my table, and tells me that her husband doesn't have a girlfriend. She tells me, it was her husband wearing her shoes. He's a cross dresser. I say, at least he doesn't have a girlfriend. She says, "Yeah, just a boy friend." She has been suspecting her husband had secrets, and put up a spy camera. I'm surprised because her husband is big guy, and I know he played football (He tells everyone about it.). She tells me, "Yeah, all those guys have one foot through the door." I fixed her table, and she seems happy. I'm surprised, I like the work I do, but if my marrage is breaking up, I wouldn't be happy over a coffee table. She asked me why the table broke, because the replacement I gave her didn't break when she had sex on the table. I asked her, "How much could you possible weigh, a hundred pounds? Your much lighter than your husband." She then said, "I wasn't dancing either." I asker if she might want a craftmans coffee table I make. It can hold three people easy, and it has plently of room." The woman thinks about it, and I show her the table. She buys the table, and ask, "Are you sure it will hold two people." I thow a moving blanket on the table, and we both stand on it. She happy. I love your work, but I don't think three people could stand on it.
This is beautiful. I have a question about the sliding dovetail joints. It looks like it was glued in all the way across? (Or at least, glued on one side, and then a filler piece glued on the other side so the slot doesn't show.) Is that right? Wouldn't that cause real wood movement issues? Or am I wrong? Thanks! It is a really, really beautiful piece.
You are correct. For all you amateur woodworker watching this video do not copy this method of gluing. The top needs to be able to expand and contact (oak moves a lot). By gluing the crossmember underneath the top you are creating a lot of tension. When that tension builds it will cause the table top to split. I produced thousands of solid top dining tables and can speak from experience.
I guess my questions is in the video was misleading or not, because it looked like it was stuck in there and wouldn't be able to move. I'm hoping it just looked that way in the video. Gluing it in all the way would defeat the whole purpose using using the sliding dovetail.
Yes, we need consider wood shrinkages, So on the sliding dovetail, only gluing one side so that the top can move naturally as shrinkages. (I glued only one side) one more, wood shrinkage is caused by moisture , so need good finishing as well. I apply varnish on the top and bottom both side after oil finishing, it can reduce shrinkage %.
Nope. One side or two sides you are still constricting the movement of the wood. The wood rays of the oak are large which allows for transfering a lot of moisture. It's a nice table and you do good work but you never want to glue end grain. I only tell you this from my experience. I learned the hard way what not to do.
You and Ishitani are clearly the winners of my heart :)
Wow 🙌
Could not agree more!

The beauty of simplicity! I love the way the top appears to float.
Why he is glueing the dovetail batten? As far as I know it should be sliding to be able to compensate the shrinking.
