I have no idea why I decided to watch the entire 2012 Opening Ceremony at the end of April 2024, but here I am.
I watch it a couple times a year. But here in April 2024 the UK seems so different to that time. We weren't so fractured then. I held a house party with my friends and my housemate friends we didn't all know each other but we had a great time watching. Nostalgia I suppose.
I'm with you... always look forward to summer Olympics
I’m looking for demonic performance as we’ve never seen.

The opening 34 mins of this gets me every time, just the most fantastic opening to an opening ceremony ever, the performances, Music, choreography and story told is just perfect. the lighting of the torch and the entrance of Redgrave through a crowd of the workers who built the park another beautiful moment. Underworld who did the music for all this deserve huge credit.

Super Saturday... Greg Rutherford Long Jump Gold, Jess Ennis-Hill Heptathlon Gold and Mo Farrah winning the 10,000 m gold. Getting goosebumps just thinking about that evening. A the halcyon days of 2012 when for 16 days the world acted as 1 instead of against each other...

The King (her father, in 1948): "I proclaim open the Olympic Games of London, celebrating the 14th Olympiad of the modern era."
11 years later and still my favorite opening ceremony ever ❤❤
I can not imagine that there will EVER be a better opening ceremony than this. The ind. revolution part is just insane, the fireworks are perfect, the music as the athletes arrive is great, Team GB entrance with David Bowie's "Heroes" and so many more things. I get goosebumps and tears to my eyes every time I see it
It's a ritual....predictive programme for the coming cv19 if you will...so easy to see here in 2024.
Don't forget James bond and the Queen! Not a big royalist but absolutely love that she was game for being involved in a fun way.
The industrialization scene is epic. Even though I'm not English, it made me emotional. The pain and labor of so many people... It's really touching.
It was really well done. Emile Sande Heaven was superb at the end of the second part also.
It made me emotional too and the music was stoning
@@willkdd9801 the music gives me goosebumps every time. absolutely I agree. :)
Best part of the show for sure.
You know it means, stripping beautiful nature and beautiful environment off planet for businesses, factories that pollute and make elites rich. Using poor working class. Tree of life was cut. And after it's grey ugly concrete
I am Greek so I am obviously biased in favor of Greece. But what I liked about this opening ceremony is that it didn't invoke a mythical past like Greece or China to validate itself, instead it showed whats worth preserving the present: good music, the NHS and the contributions made by the UK to the whole world like the world wide web.
I was already blown away by the ceremony and reading your comment made me enjoy the "London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony" a lot more. Thank you :)
the reason is very obvious because Greece and China have mythical pasts.
+Radical Unity а
well, both greece and england have baby, young civilization compare to China.
A mystical past is rather typical. Take away middle eastern influence on English civilization you get a people with almost nothing left. Take away Roman influence, they are iliterate.
Greece is a relateively young civilization too, compare to India, China...etc. Pretty much a baby nation.
also, so much of their music has american influence. Their culture is so much of a product of americanization... we can swap the band with an american band and it'll be an olympic in USA. Nothing unique here lol
Yeah but you are not British as patriotism is not too welcome in the UK. It is too bold in a country know for being modest.
A bit like the Japanese in that matter. Not too sure of South Korean values but sadism on your children seems high with the national exam day and employment practices of the companies.

I'm an American and I remember watching this for the first time and realizing, to my shock, how much of what I grew up with and loved and assumed was American pop culture ... was actually British. Well done, UK. You really reminded us how deeply you've impacted our lives. Also, I don't think I've ever seen anything so simultaneously dreadful and inspiring as the Pandemonium sequence. The golden Olympic ring out of all that smoke and chaos. I thought it was very brave of Britain to acknowledge both the good and the bad that came out of industrialization, and very hopeful to have all that result in a symbol of unity for all humanity.
watch the closing one too
wow, I really loved this comment!
English teacher from America here. This is what I constantly try to tell my kids, all the time, when they ask why we study British literature in America. Because the Brits INVENTED English. They developed it from a mere language to one of the most beautiful and universal modes of expression through the development of an incredible culture. America is full of Dutch, Irish, German, Spanish, African, Japanese, and Middle Eastern Immigrants. But we all speak English, and the Brits are the masters of it.
However...this had a lot of American influences, either way....not much into the British Culture much or their music or cinema.....but I like the first part of the Opening Ceremony. I guess is safe to say that if these British Bands did not make in the USA they would not be as big as they were.... Like the Beatles, Queen or Elton John....they all came to America and made big HERE.
@@hlatino03I hope I'm not coming across as rude but can you not make this about America rn. We know America is one of the biggest influences in the world but it's not everyday it must be made the best in every single conversation. Opening industrial portrayal. Many years later still mesmerising, captivating, heartbreaking, exhilarating and spiritually rendering. Reflecting history and humanity at its most vulnerable and powerful, full of expectation, but with no certain outcome, like sport itself. As a Londoner living just a mile from the stadium at the time (and luckily with the fortune to attend a couple days events), I could relate to lots of the story and symbolism in this piece. I pray this important and iconic production and its anthem live on for decades, as a reminder (especially given incredibly dark times, worldwide, barely a decade later), of the unshakeable collective power of the people. Past, present and future. Heartfelt thank you and well done to all the creators and participants involved. Blessings.

The last time my mother and her dear sister were together was in the latter's retirement condo in Miami. We watched in rapt silence as this splendid event of yours unfurled. Afterward, we all had tea and mom told us stories of the two years she and dad spent in London after the war. We stayed up late and finally turned in contented from an evening of storytelling, laughter and remembrance, the perfect end to our visit,. And it all began with this ceremony. The next morning, we flew back to Virginia.
I've always wanted to thank someone for this. So, if you'll permit me, I'd like to thank you. Nicely done! May your life be filled with moments like these.
Why did I cry at the Industrial Revolution segment? It's like witnessing the very birth of history itself with my very own eyes

Dear Brits... there you had a real masterpiece of an opening ceremony... Still loving it! Greetings from Germany!
danke 😉
Chillkröte hello I’m from England glad you like it

Watching this for the umpteenth time. The industrial and rings sequence brought tears to my eye. So epic. So proud of UK. Best opening sequence ever. ❤

First thing he mentions is the weather, how British 😂
Yes, that day (and indeed for the previous few months- as for example during the Diamond Jubilee river parade) the weather had been as British as British can be !
He also mentioned easterners hahah
Rosida Andriyana Japan likes England over America but we have no Asians in England when America and Canada has lots. Meaning Chinese, Japanese and Korean people but with the accent of England.
Rosida Andriyana London is crappy
lol , we are English, stiff upper lip I think :)
Cool! wonderful memories of London 2012 and I'm the girl holding Cyprus placard during the athletes ceremony so thank you as haven't seen this before. Time flies but this was one of the greatest. opening ceremonies ever.
I'm watching in may 2024 and I'm still blown away are the choreography this all took this is the best opening I have seen
The way the music builds and breaks just after 25:29 , only to fall into a period of remembrance is beyond beautiful. This was truly a magical production. Shivers down my spine every time. A moment of shared humanity. Proud to be British.
This brings tears to my eyes 10 years on. Caliban, Brunell, the NHS, Dizzy Rascal, Olympics in East London and Danny Boyle in charge of that. Choreography, costumes, lighting, sound, everything on point. The Queen not telling her family she was involved. That's class. I was so proud then and still am of that moment (thank you Radio 4 for The Reunion) but...I won't spoil it.
We went to this and it still is one of the best experiences of my life. An incredible event.
My favorite openings
: London / pyeongchang

I forgot just how many amazing beautiful songs were included in this. The kind you’d never expect to hear anywhere near an Olympics ceremony. Firestarter , Born Slippy.. and so on. Amazing.
I remember coming home from holiday the day the olympics started and seeing the hustle and bustle travelling through London. honestly can't think of a more beautiful moment of the world being united in London at that moment. It was genuinely one of the few times I've felt proud to be British seeing tourists of all corners of the world taking pictures and laughing together :)
Honestly so true, I remember watching it on the TV and fell asleep at some point through the countries because I was only young and im a complete adult now. This country has gone to shambles but that ceremony is something that as a Brit I can be proud in my country for that
You should have pride in your country, despite its problems, much more often. It is, truly great.
I was in this, and it is still the best night of my life.
what did you do
Me too.
Where were you? Audience or dancers?
It's been 4 years and we are still waiting for this lady to tell us what she did.
6 now
Nothing can surpass the theatricality and grandeur of this production.
I never get tired of watching this
Without doubt The GREATEST theatrical opening ceremony production the world has ever seen!!!! Nobody can beat this
The Industrial Revolution performance, which precedes the coming-together of the Olympic rings, always gives me goosebumps. Phenomenal music and performance. Perfectly executed.
Is it just me, or does London have one of the best/sentimental torch lighting ceremony ever?
It's not just you- although a lot of people missed the "chosen superhero Olympian" concept that had crept into torch lightings from Atlanta onward.
I was in floods of tears watching it at the time!
💖
jchang133 you’re absolutely right as seeing the part of London and the local boy done well in the form of David Beckham driving the boat made me a tad bit emotional.
Barcelona still own that title
Nothing, anywhere, will ever eclipse this! Pure efforty, talent, genius and perfection.
I still absolutely love how the idea behind the ceremony, Danny Boyle knew he couldn't surpass china's opening ceremony in size and scale, so instead he went for the idea of "inspire a generation", and the show in the end, turned out better than anyone could have hoped
Haha nice

Another 11 years and i am watching it again , amazing love from battle east Sussex x x
am i the only one who thinks the whole world was happier than this days?
I agree, we were all care-free and just generally happier.
