I still absolutely love how the idea behind the ceremony, Danny Boyle knew he couldn't surpass china's opening ceremony in size and scale, so instead he went for the idea of "inspire a generation", and the show in the end, turned out better than anyone could have hoped

How do I explain that I will never be able to forget that day, where my whole family got together and we watched this, live on television? And I still think that it is the best inauguration, the best music, the best effects, the lighting of the Olympic torch is so emotional, this is amazing.

Wow, 29:00 Goosebumps -- the soundtrack, theatre/performances -- depicting the industrial revolution - people of the UK built their country with blood, sweat, and tears, but also revealing the Olympic rings. Simply magnificent. Magic ❤
Blood, sweat, tears where did that come from, with all the history they have all over the world even America?? Stole every resources existed on earth through colonization and manufacturing by slave work force, even English workers were not treated well but finally think themselves as saviour. Division of India and Pakistan, creation of Israel, African black slavery at America... What's that carribbean small nation, recently got Independence from English Colonization??
Personally I think the camera men running around the whole stadium and not missing and inch of footage, should have our thanks too. For everlasting footage of this glorious British event 😊
2012 really was the benchmark year of being British. Nothing will ever come close to the pride that swept through the nation during the games. Never forget the happiness on the streets.. Take me back
I'm an American and I remember watching this for the first time and realizing, to my shock, how much of what I grew up with and loved and assumed was American pop culture ... was actually British. Well done, UK. You really reminded us how deeply you've impacted our lives. Also, I don't think I've ever seen anything so simultaneously dreadful and inspiring as the Pandemonium sequence. The golden Olympic ring out of all that smoke and chaos. I thought it was very brave of Britain to acknowledge both the good and the bad that came out of industrialization, and very hopeful to have all that result in a symbol of unity for all humanity.
English teacher from America here. This is what I constantly try to tell my kids, all the time, when they ask why we study British literature in America. Because the Brits INVENTED English. They developed it from a mere language to one of the most beautiful and universal modes of expression through the development of an incredible culture. America is full of Dutch, Irish, German, Spanish, African, Japanese, and Middle Eastern Immigrants. But we all speak English, and the Brits are the masters of it.
However...this had a lot of American influences, either way....not much into the British Culture much or their music or cinema.....but I like the first part of the Opening Ceremony. I guess is safe to say that if these British Bands did not make in the USA they would not be as big as they were.... Like the Beatles, Queen or Elton John....they all came to America and made big HERE.
@@hlatino03I hope I'm not coming across as rude but can you not make this about America rn. The last time my mother and her dear sister were together was in the latter's retirement condo in Miami. We watched in rapt silence as this splendid event of yours unfurled. Afterward, we all had tea and mom told us stories of the two years she and dad spent in London after the war. We stayed up late and finally turned in contented from an evening of storytelling, laughter and remembrance, the perfect end to our visit,. And it all began with this ceremony. The next morning, we flew back to Virginia. I've always wanted to thank someone for this. So, if you'll permit me, I'd like to thank you. Nicely done! May your life be filled with moments like these.

I am not British, but came here for a palate cleanser after the disaster that was the Paris opening. Haven’t seen this in 12 years, but what a joy to be reminded of what a classy and innovative ceremony looked like, a culture that still pays respect to its heritage and roots, and yet also tastefully showcasing diversity as a strength in the modern era. The industrial revolution piece was amazing. I felt emotional watching it as through the storytelling I can sense the bittersweetness of the country’s technological progress- the green hills being replaced by the industrial revolution, the visionaries of the future represented by Brunel, and the sooty, grimy faces representing the hardship and struggles of the average citizens who built the country. The forging of the Olympics rings in the fires of industry and them coming together was a masterpiece. The universal values that build a country which are also very apt for the Olympics were on display- determination & perseverance through hardship, innovation, unity… nothing of this was found in the Paris opening. I was looking forward to the Paris opening, but I was very disappointed. Having to rely on shock value to distract from the disjointed mess and mediocre planning shows how talentless the director is, truly shocking as France is reputed to be a country of class and the arts. He made it all about himself rather than thinking about how the universal values of the Olympic spirit could be embodied in the ceremony.
England and London especially has been through so much. When I read English authors one thing that struck me was the recurring theme of war and loss. As a US American, I have no experience of that (9/11 being over 1000 miles away). It's wonderful to see British people unite and collaborate on something creative and positive, although having to overcome adversity by working together gave them the experience needed to create this masterpiece.

I am, suprisingly, in tears watching this. Im so proud of Danny Boyle and everyone who had any part in putting this together from concept to final performance and the extraordinary design, logisti s and tech. Wonderful storytelling of the UK and its culture, history and people, our troubles and ...including our humour. So many people coming together for something joyful and positive. My cousin perforned in the ceremony and I am so proud of her. I hope we recapture this spirit again.
It was the last time I saw Great Britain/ UK united in positivity. I’m so grateful to have seen it. I hope wish and pray that someday soon I see a return to this way.

I remember being in my friends living room with a fair few others just gobsmacked. There’s a natural cynicism in Brits and I’d be lying if I said some of us weren’t chewing our fingers beforehand thinking this might be embarrassing on a world scale but when those fiery Olympic Rings came together we were roaring. My partner burst into tears😂 and after that all of us were crying, laughing cheering. The Queen/Bond moment, Mr Bean, the music, the 7/7 tribute, the NHS bit, the cauldron being lit, a brilliant emotional rollercoaster. The actual games weren’t bad either👍

It wasn’t really the Middle Ages at the start. It could just have easily been pre-industrial England in the 1700s, or even modern England in a country village❤
I completely agree with your thoughts, although the timeline depicted starts with the Industrial Revolution toward the end of the 19th century. Hands down, it was one of the best Olympic openings.
I remembered watching this with the family and being shocked how most of the things that I loved came from British culture. I already knew about Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Doctor Who and various other things. But I had an eagerness of exploring the city, seeing the statues, and hearing Big Ben ring. I realized that going to London was my dream and promised myself that one way or another I was going to see the city in person someday. Seven years later my dream came true!
The UK is a cultural powerhouse. I loved the industrialisation scene which was obviously important British history which affected the entire world but what puts this ceremony on top is the song medley focussed on the young couple around a modest suburban house. A completely relatable human experience (not boasting about empire or anything) but backed by the most insane flex of soft power - some of the most popular music in Modern history, all British, put together so artistically. I am Irish so it slightly pains me to give that compliment. France had no equivalent in tonight's ceremony. In fact, the dance music medley was almost embarrassing.
2024 ceremony looked like a 'Tango' advert from the 1990s? Do you drink 'Tango' in the Emerald Isle, or is everyone reared on draft Guinness from the age of three?
The compliment belongs to you too my friend. Britain would be nowhere without Ireland‘s contributions. You deserve credit for our country too! And although you all have every historical reason to dislike the UK, we love the Irish❤ not to mention millions of us have Irish relatives😅

Goosebumps, shivers, tears, and for a grit and determination forged in over 2000 years of invention, invasion (both ways), and warfare. Forged the modern world. Is there any other country like this or ever will be? The green fields of these tiny isles shaped the entire world. It's impossible to comprehend. Must be something in the blood.
The way the music builds and breaks just after 25:29 , only to fall into a period of remembrance is beyond beautiful. This was truly a magical production. Shivers down my spine every time. A moment of shared humanity. Proud to be British.

This is the best Opening Ceremony in modern times. The British have so much to be proud of and they delivered artistically and emotionally. Every participant was a star and an artist. The entire production is outstanding. I often rewatch this ceremony to be inspired in my daily life. Cheers to the UK.

London showed innovation, hope, international harmony, respect and interwoven emotional themes with incredible entertainment. To have created this triumph Danny Boyle became a national treasure. Thank you to him and all involved.
This brings tears to my eyes 10 years on. Caliban, Brunell, the NHS, Dizzy Rascal, Olympics in East London and Danny Boyle in charge of that. Choreography, costumes, lighting, sound, everything on point. The Queen not telling her family she was involved. That's class. I was so proud then and still am of that moment (thank you Radio 4 for The Reunion) but...I won't spoil it.
The Queen was a very cool lady. I also loved the Paddington Bear piece she did to open her jubilee concert. She was unwell, but like always, delivered.
There was a clear topic being shown here: industrialisation. Everything was about cultural and anything we’re proud of our country. Even HMTQ herself was included in the show. It’s about being grande, with grace and dignity. No one was being sexualised/objectified/harassed here. This is incredibly iconic. Pure art.

I thought it was very brave of Britain to acknowledge both the good and the bad that came out of industrialization, and very hopeful to have all that result in a symbol of unity for all humanity.

wow, I really loved this comment!

The Pandemonium sequence / Underworlds soundtrack is just absolutely iconic! Mesmerising! The Brits are not ashamed to show the unfathomable talent, beauty and not so pretty of it’s history!
Yes! I still get tears watching that ❤❤
It's still awesome
Admit it. We are all here for the Industrial Revolution part.
Yes. And also Mr Bean.
Best part
And Voldemort.
Totally. Still as powerful and emotive is it was 12 years ago.

All these years later. Still gives chills, goosebumps, pride to be British. This was an incredible effort from all.
Korea will always be a part of it❤
4 hours of why its called 'Great' Britain
Correct 💯
I was lucky enough to be there, and I will never be able to tell you how incredible and emotional that opening scene was. Will always, always remember it.
Pity all occult freemason symbolism. .

One reason why British Olympic Opening Ceremony it's great; *they're brought all of the genre of music*
We kinda have all the genres. Tbf tho, without Chicago Blues we’d be screwed, but so would all modern music. We are punching. That music set made me more proud than any gold medal 🥇
@@idatekatemoss No it wouldn't
This is the best Opening Ceremony in modern times. The British have so much to be proud of and they delivered artistically and emotionally. Every participant was a star and an artist. The entire production is outstanding. I often rewatch this ceremony to be inspired in my daily life. Cheers to the UK.
The best Olympics opening ceremony i have ever witnessed. I have lost count of how many times i have watched this. The *pandemonium* part gives me goosebumps every time. Danny Boyle is a genius
Danny Boyle ? The same guy who directed Trainspotting and The Beach? Holy cow I can't believe it
@@Scriptum_1Yes and Underworld who did Born Slippy! Incredible music and vision.
best ceremony is greece 2004
didnt you see Beijing 2008???

The Industrial Revolution performance, which precedes the coming-together of the Olympic rings, always gives me goosebumps. Phenomenal music and performance. Perfectly executed.
What happened to Tokyo? They didn’t use their culture as much as UK
Pandemic.
Not only pandemic... it was a disaster and tragedy
Now colonizing other countries is a culture china still the best
now japan is died. This is China money japan so everything is crazy
Their director changes for multiple times due to different scandals...
London showed innovation, hope, international harmony, respect and interwoven emotional themes with incredible entertainment.
To have created this triumph Danny Boyle became a national treasure.
Thank you to him and all involved.
the industrial revolution part is actually one of the best things ive ever seen
Sorry, what part was that? Is for history homework :c

UK can be proud. This was a beautiful ceremony!
Love from France!

It’s your turn soon guys, Paris ‘24 will be fantastic I’m sure.

I saw the symbol of Paris 2024 and fell in love of it.
Paris: the city of love
Looking forward to 2024 in Paris! 💛
Your turn. What have you got for us?
Pure art.
But the workers are slaves.
