Paul Scholes basically has the vision of the entire field in his brain with all the players positioning, knows exactly where his team mates are and how fast they are running, has the ability to put the weighted pass that ends up right in front of his running team mate and doesn't get robbed off the ball. Just that only not much else but can't find a replacement.

Watching this I genuinely don't understand it. I'm a massive fan of the "technical side" of football and can usually see the best option upon seeing the shape of the team. But Scholes has a god given gift for these passes and I feel blind watching this. It actually feels like he had 20 minutes to study the best option in those split seconds he had. This video is scary.

    • @whiteben37

Weight and accuracy are just two components.
Vision and game reading are important as well. The way he sees the pitch is sometimes better than us with a bird-eye view.
And how about choosing the best passing options to pass to (should I pass to teammate A or teammate B?). Choosing the type of passes to make (go long/short, play quick/slow?) (should I play a high ball for messi to head against Terry? Or should I keep it on the ground?). These type of decision making is important too.
      Scholes has mastered all these.

I do not know why they bought Veron, whose game never suited the style - perhaps to make Scholes fight for his position ?
I find it funny that people in England thinks Gerrard was better because he scored more goals, its funny, reason United won so many trophies was cause they had player like Schoes and not Gerrard or Lampard. Scholes made Cristiano, Nistelroy, and Rooney score, his primary job is not to score flukes like Lampard.

    • @debindralimbu381
      @debindralimbu381 2 роки тому

@@adad-ec6ht Lol no Gerrard was better because Gerrard had everything in his game. He passed just as good as Scholes and his passing are even dangerous and directly threatening to the opposition than Scholes who mostly passed in an open flanks to the wingers with lots of spaces.
And Btw, if United has Gerrard, you wouldn’t be talking about Scholes like how you think about him right now. Because I’ve seen Scholes being dropped in an important matches and subbed on and off for someone like Veron, Nicky Butt, Kleberson, John O’sea, Anderson, Etc. Also, Fletcher, Js park and Carrick even benched Scholes when Scholes was playing his best football as a deep lying playmaker. It’s no debate, Scholes can be the best in the pitch when he’s on the ball, but he was average on many things off the ball which is why he never got chance when Lampard came to the scene in the central midfield role. Scholes needs another DM to play his natural game which England couldn’t afford when they had 2 top midfielders and strikers on Gerrard/Lampard and Rooney/Owen. Hence why Hargreaves got a chance to play as a DM and not Scholes.

He used to dominate the midfield, drop deep, collect the ball, placed him as the anchor and regulated the defensive thirds. He was not as prolific passer as pirlo or scholes but his established role in the game made him the greates centre mid. Players like pirlo and scholes had pin point accuracy but the recievers had to be good controllers of the ball, those passes are a bit reciever dependent whereas xavi's passes were player friendly, anyone could recieve his long ball not because of his accuracy but because of his vision

He was terrific young, sneaking about in the hole behind the forwards, scoring fair share of goals.
But for me, when he had to adapt, and people forget, he got concussed and had vision issues in this period as well, he did something you rarely see. A quarter-back alike football, where the backs and midfield players would hand it off to him and he would play it short, medium, long, and diagonal switching the play like a fucking master orchestrator at work. Magic.
In the last.. two years? I watched as the team degraded and kept giving the ball away. I could see from afar frustrating that poorer quality meant wrong workload. But bottom line, he made Man United worth the entry fee. And all the players people talk about, the Giggs, The Cantona, The Andy Cole, Sheringham, York - and the wingers - those wingers could hug the line, the ball would come. They could make the run, the ball could come. Magic.
No greater words than Bobby Charlton saying he was his favourite player. Nuff said. Done. Dusted. Put a fork in it.
And if you don't rate Scholes - You don't know football.
Lastly. Not one to roll around crying. He came up through the school of Robson, Ince, Whiteside, Moses, Stiles. I fucking LOVE that he was willing and did play the hard and dirty work of not letting others play while strumming the orchestra in the night. Magic. Red_Devil. Exactly.
Not the greatest athlete, and troubled by hot weather - which is why I think the big tournaments don't show much for him. Incredible career. Blessed with talent. Lucky in that regard but matched with a work and team ethos which took him to an incredible level. Man U in the golden period would not have been without him.

This is my opinion, I don't think there is another central midfielder in history that could ping the ball with such technique and accuracy. Scholes had a range of passing unmatched by any other player. Long or short, those cross diagonals from inside his own half were just pure arttistry. He never ever lost the ball or mistimed a pass even feom over 50 yards, we watched in complete awe of his consistency. The weight of the pass through and behind defenders, he didn't just pass the ball, he caressed it with extreme precision. He knew exactly where the ball had to go before even receiving it and the type of pass to make. The most intelligent player on the field and unbelievable how good he was. He never got the true recognition he deserved because of his quiet personality. Never did interviews. He was the shy boy with the red hair and yes Gerrard and Lampard were great players, but Scholes was like watching Picasso paint a masterpiece everytime he passed the ball. It was that beautiful.

He changed the game tactically by his ability: before and after him there was no player making well reachable long distance passes on production line.
Today 80% of long distance passes are defended. So teams don't risk it. Or teams play on the second ball.

you can debate the gerrard, lampard, scholes thing (i personally think theyre all so good, u could say theyre near enough level) but when it comes to passing and vision, scholes stands out. His ability to control the game gives him the edge in my opinion as the best english (if not worldwide) midfielder of all time. His technical brilliance is as good as ive ever seen from a footballer. Foreigners would like to say iniesta, xavi, pirlo, zidane, but when u actually analyse it individually hes behind none of them, maybe in some aspects but not overall game an impact, and in many ways u could say he had a bit of each of them, so a better all rounder. Hes played in traditional football systems where the midfielder (himself) is the main man, the creative one these others are in tiki taka systems filled with many stars, where everyone are creative, midfield-type players (also with the midfielders themselves being in a 3 rather than 2, so again a lot more evenly shared). Edit: zidane maybe not actually, he used to control the midfield on his own in many squads, without the help of an equally good counterpart - I was just thinking cos he’s played in Spanish (Real Madrid) systems, but they weren’t the tiki taka Barcelona were even, they promoted more individualism

I remember watching match of the day when there was a young lad "marking" Scholesy for the opposition. The lad had so much energy and at the start of the game Souness said that energy wont matter. Scholesy moved away in that half second the lad wasnt watching and always one touch passed to the teammates the entire game. The lad was replaced at half time for another player who was older wiser and still got nowhere.
Watching Scholesy was just amazing. He was head and shoulders above everyone else skill wise. He just made it look so easy. His only weakspot was his tackling and that really didnt matter all that much since he was always the one dictating the play. His ability to move into space at the perfect moment, and be where he was needed at the perfect moment.... Then land a 30 yard pass, time and time again, some games it was just a passing masterclass as no one could get near enough to stop him. He needed half a second and he already knew where he was passing the ball to. Very rare to see him dwell on the ball. I think the biggest difference was you would watch a player nowadays, they take their time and then make 2 of those passes a game and people comment. You just expected to see 15 of those passes a game from Scholes, on the turn with no space, and you were almost surprised when they didnt connect perfectly to the striker. It was just nuts to watch.

Scholes is far more better than Lampard and Gerrard. Lampard and Gerrard simply know how to score or assist, but Scholes know how to win the game. Just higher level.

Paul reply was "If you want me to play for you, you have to buy this club" Gold!!
