I couldn't tell you if it would help your friend without seeing him. It hits right under the ribcage, so it does not support the thoracic region.

It's for symptom relief, it's not a cure. So wear it as long as you need relief for. Usually during the activities that bother you the most.

Back braces are designed to decrease your pain, so if you get increased pain when you use it, it's probably a good idea to stop using it.
