- Comedy Gold is airing Match Game 73 right now. This is a preview of what the episodes look like in Canada.
This is the last episode of the 2nd week of Match Game 73.
Della Reese, Richard Dawson, Arlene Francis, Bob Barker, Michael Learned, Richard Thomas
Three of the best game show hosts ever right here.
@@eyehatefarcebook11 and Groucho and Bud Collyer and Monty Hall
I'm only feeling 2 of those best game show hosts...ever!
Yes! Good point!
Peter Marshall on Hollywood Squares and Will Ferrell on SNL Celebrity Jeopardy.
della and thomas very underrated panelists
God bless Bob Barker’s long life in his 90’s.
I so adore John Boy. He's so sweet. So mannerly and polite. I simply adore Della Reese. And, of course Richard Dawson is one of my favorites.
I agree Richard Thomas very cute, I didnt know I had a crush on him.
I’m 29, and I just love watching shows from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Match game is on top of my list, and price is right is number two
R.I.P. Della Reese. :(
The first challenger has what was called "Carol Brady hair" :)
Women wore the first mullets!
@@diverbob33 It was called a "shag" hairstyle because it was shaggy in the back.
Florence Henderson as Carol Brady on The Brady Bunch helped popularize it, as girlgenius said.
3 things i'm intrigued to see becoming: The habit of hugging the winning celebrity, Richard, Charles and Brett get their definite seats and Richard's popularity.
I have never see Dawson on the top row.
Finally, an older person. I love this show. I only wished they'd had more older adults. I think it would be more interesting. Still love the show, no matter what. Best show ever. I use to watch this when i was young. Love these re-runs. Thank you, so much for uploaded this funny game show.
The TPIR Plug, good job Bob Barker.
...COME ON DOWN!!!
RIP Della Reese.
Love how now the audiences show their claps at super match !! ... one of the very initial time this happen! Like this Match Game!
Yes but it doesn't at anything, claps are just annoying 🤣😄🤔
"Mary asked John, 'Would you like a little lamb?'"
Her outfit matches the set!
I USE TO WATCH THE MATCH GAME. AS A CHILD. AWESOME. TV SHOW.
Della Reese Rest In Peace.
she was so beautiful back then
I can't WAIT until they start asking some decent questions on here!
Wow I never realized they had the stars arranged girl, boy girl up top and boy girl boy down the bottom! How about that!
These first episodes had the most boring and lame questions. I'm so glad they worked out the kinks!!!
+Kathy Odom It was more similar to the original Match Game started in the early 60's. Some of the newer questions were a little lame but more fun to answer for the most part.
that horror movie question was...just awful. They didn;t make clear if it was an actor or character too...
@@brookehanley3659did you know this version of the show was actually cancelled after 6 months? It was too boring and didn't catch on. They decided to bring in new writers, spice up the questions and go for broke. Obviously it worked. The show took off and found its audience. The rest as they say is history.
I love Bob, but it's weird having 'Richard' mean someone not Dawson, with the latter on the top tier!
Bell Bottoms....mullets.....those were the days!
prunella goodrich Mullets?! That was not in our vocab at all back then.
Brooke Hanley Actually they were called Bi-Level cuts. (ex hairdresser) I think Mullets was used in the 80's as a "put down"
+prunella goodrich It was called the Shag.
+Brooke Hanley yes I know. I was a hairdresser back then. Mullet was a slang for Bi Level. I loved the Shag haircut. You couldn't hardly mess it up!
+prunella goodrich I never heard of mullet til the 90's. The shag came and went so fast but it actually does reappear intermittently on women here and there. It was that flattering to a woman's face.... unlike that Dorothy Hamel bowl cut that looked good on a few but on many made them look like a man.
Sylvia...what can I say? Love that hairstyle! What did they call it back in the day? I'd call it the Tomahawk Chop! (Yes, I know it's basically a variation on the Florence Henderson style, but dear Sylvia has rocked it up a notch!)
It was called a shag. Sylvia's is about ready for a trim. They were really cute around the face on lots of women, but I never cared for the "tufts" on the bottom sides.
Later on it was called a mullet ..Love the hair from the 1970's and 80's..
wow, i made a mean comment - i apologize - Richard Thomas was very humble - Della played a good game too
Gene definitely liked Arlene Francis. She would have been on more often if it had been up to him.
They were old buddies from the 1970s game show circuit and MatchGame in particular.
Interesting that Richard Thomas was never on MG again after this week .
I'm trying to find an episode, can anyone help. it has this part where Gene was trying to say bye to the losing contestant, but the stage started turning before he could. then they turn the stage back and girl comes back, but the stags turns AGAIN before he could finish. it was hilarious
I know it's been a while since your comment post, you may have already found that episode again by now. I believe it may be "Match Game 73 (Episode 108) (Wrong Way Turntable??)".
They moved everybody around. Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilley, and Betty White would appear next week.
thanks, been wondering when the trifecta happens lol
@@DJRitty That was the first time for all three of them.
Thanks for sharing that makes me happy
Love seeing this without all the annoying GSN promos at the end. Also enjoy the use of the NBC-era style questions as a change of pace.
Thanks, Canada!
Your welcome!
Bob phucked up with Gold-dust. I immediately thought of finger and then rush
weird without brett and charles
Ikr, their energy was a big part of the show
I agree we need their sense of humor
IKR no open bar until Brett got there!
The name something a baby does more than an adult is a question that was used on the pilot
also reused when it went to pm.
now there is something i don't see. richard dawson on the top tier
The seating arrangement is reversed here. Usually its guy, lady, guy on top tier, lady, guy, lady on bottom tier. Here its lady, guy, lady on top tier, and guy, lady, guy on bottom tier. Definitely a sign of experimenting with the seating arrangements during the early days of the show.
I once read a rumor that the panelists were moved around after Richard Dawson was upset when a contestant on episode 6 called on 'Richard" for the Super Match and Jim Rayburn thought she meant Richard Thomas and went with him, but Dawson claimed she was looking at him. Since they were seated in such a way as to make it almost impossible to tell which one the contestant was looking at and since Dawson made such a stink about it, they moved the two Richards so that it would be easier to tell which one the contestant was looking at when they called "Richard" and they moved the others around as well to disguise the fact they were moving the two Richards. I believed it since Richard Dawson is so well known to get petulant and argumentative. But he was also the leading force that drove the show into the hilarity gutter we all loved it for.
@@Smokr One of the leading force, give Gene some credit to know that MG needed the comedy to make it in the ratings. The original MG of the 60's only made it a year before it was canceled but had some episode to go to finish up. Gene and the writers decided that changed the question to be funny and do some funny bits that brought of the ratings up so NBC uncaneled the show and it ran until 1969. It was a weak game and Gene knew it, knew what it needed to make it the number 1 hit it would become with help of Richard of course.. Of course Mark Goodson fought them almost the entire time wanting it to be played straight..
Boy the Walton's set must have been a laugh a minute.
Gene doesn't look right without his long mic.
crystalheart9 Gene wore a lapel microphone up to the Christmas episode. After that he exclusively used the ECM-51 wand until the end of the syndicated run in 1982.
and there's the famous ep where he figured out the mic could be extended !!!!
Oh which one is that?!?
@@dutchtreat9 I think it's in 76? lol
i know
It's kind of funny that Canada can play all the credits, yet GSN refuses to do so (and also no speed-ups!)
Buzzr also plays the full credits too.
A... detective.. followed her home.
there is something wrong with richard thomas.
what's interesting is how they were put in order of being entertaining, the bottom row is like watching grass grow. the producers knew right away how to fix this show, gene is great, surround him with some characters and there you go.
Well a slow week but everyone got to give away some money this week but, strangely enough with the exact amount as the week before, Richard Thomas won the week giving away 5,750 dollars in a head to head and audience match matches. Della won for the most matches of 13 and gave away 500 dollars in audience match matches. Arlene, Richard Dawson and Michael each gave away 500 dollars and Bob giving away 250 dollars in audience match matches. Michael and Richard Thomas are now tied giving away the most money so far this season.. ;0)
Why are the stars’ chair positions all goofed up?
The show is just beginning, they are still trying to figure the seat position who they are going to have on as regular. It is only the second week of a new format for this show..
did they ever have two male contestants on this show at the same time? often male/female and lots of two female but i don't ever remember seeing two guys on the same show
interesting stony-faced silence, btw, in response to the 'smothers brothers' answer -- i suppose that was because the smothers brothers had successfully sued cbs for a very substantial sum after their show was cancelled?
about you query on "two male contestants", just a guess, but probably way more women applicants.
The men were working, the wives had time to play with?
Have yet to see 2 male contestants. Noticed something similar on older TPIR too - out of the 4 contestants, usually 3 are women.
The show was only a couple weeks old.
Match game hadn’t quite hit is stride yet. More provocative questions, funnier celebrities (Brett & CNR) and the infamous open bar during dinner break would make it a legend
I'm sure they added the open bar because of Brett.
Did Paul Lynde ever appear on Match Game?
No, he didn't
1973 and no one said Grand Funk? Must have been a relatively ancient audience!
thought the same thing, grand funk railroad, massively popular with the kids. (me)
Richard Dawson might very known of GFRR but Gene and the rest of panel were generally clueless about current events and especially about Rock music.
HA! Captiain Kangaroo lmao!!!
They showed a marathon of the 70s era episodes on Comedy Gold in anticipation of the new Canadian version airing on The Comedy Network. It's hosted by Canadian comedian Darrin Rose. They taped sixty episodes this past summer in Montreal on the set which has been used for the French-language version for a year or so, titled "Atomes Crochus". This new version is doing okay so far. Some episodes are on UA-cam if you're interested.
"Hooked Atoms" ???? Does anyone know what that signifies in Canadian French?
I think Della Reese was underused by the contestants. She had great words. She almost always matched them, and when given the opportunity, she usually had something on the Super-Match when she was chosen to offer her word. She was never chosen for the final match thing.
poor sylvia had a little bit of a cultural and language barrier.
No hand mic for Gene Rayburn until he gets to Super Match..No Bret Somers with Dawson seated in her slot, the show would soon change for the better..
yeah cleveland my home
the bottom tier is still alive.the top tier isn't.
thank GOD , episode 11 starts the zaniness -- this show would have gone off of the air if they kept the 5 "" stars"" at least RICHARD DAWSON tried to liven up these first episodes
Oh, for heaven's sake, it's a new iteration of a show and most of them are playing the questions straight, as in the old MG. If these same celebrities had been on for a second week, they would have learned to gauge the new audiences and been a lot more relaxed.
they finally find their groove...it happens eventually but yeah these two weeks were very dull but the little things help alot. Right seating, MUSIC - it's not the same without the music playing during the super match, etc... Like THIS though...wouldn't have lasted long lol thank god indeed the spark is next lol ;)
The Marx Bros. as a choice of an answer ... when they were still fresh on everybody's memory
The Marx Brothers were a long time before before the 70s. Mosts of their movies were active from 1905 to 1949.
0:25 looks like John-Boy had a few nips of The Recipe. I hope Grandma didn't see this.
Della Reese rip
Free spirit starting to fly, Dayton. ROFL! Another fine after dinner episode! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Gene! ;0) This must have been the shot that is in the MG funny moments and bloopers video on youtube.. ;0) Hah a straight Harry question.. ;0)
Gold dust? What a stupid answer. Gold fish at least.
What happened to his mic at the end?
THE ______ BROTHERS QUESTION IS THE EXACT QUESTION AND ANSWERS IN LATER EPISODES ... BRETT LATER SAYS SMOTHERS BROTHERS, RICHARD DAWSON SAYS DR. JOYCE BROTHERS... NO ONE SAYS MARX BROTHERS :)
Very funny! Celebrities in different positions?
it's the name something for me
family feud reference

This early episode shows how quickly they got on the ball and upped the ante on comedy. Here they're using questions better suited to Family Feud. Luckily the show would never be this lame again until Gene left it. (When you see who's playing the following week, you have to assume it was much funnier.)
Actually, Match Game left Gene, Gene didn't leave MG. Gene loved doing MG and wanted to continue. Gene wanted to do the MG85, MG90 but once his true age got out no one wanted to hire him to work and that all Gene wanted to do was work. I wonder if Gene would have lived longer if someone just gave him some work to do, voice work, host work, anything..
Musy be a rare episode with the panel genders reversed
I think this was the most intelligent panel despite missing Charles Nelson Reilly....if you can just take out Johnboy and replace with Charles...this was a weird episode and the woman with the cop husband got ripped off why questions
Derrse rip
omg that chick has a mullet!
Back then, they called that a shag. Mrs. Brady had the same hairstyle on the Brady Bunch.
Morbid Yes, it was a very flattering feminine cut that looked good on most women. It was not a mullet!!
Brooke Hanley uh huh Why would any woman do that to herself?!
It was 1973, what the hell did you guys expect?!
+suzycreamcheesez It was at the time commonly called the Shag haircut and it was a very sexy cut tha tmen loved. Look at Jane Fonda in Klute. She started the trendy craze and it flattered many women.
Grand piano
The first episodes were definitely lacklustre compared to how the show would play out later. First Michael Landon, then Ma Walton and John Boy. Three less humorous people I can not think of. The show hit its stride shortly into the season and sustained itself through 1976 and into 1977 when sour, sullen Richard Dawson first made his appearance. Always better when he was happier and funny.
And not in the usual order of:
(Top Row) MALE / FEMALE / MALE
(Bottom) FEMALE / MALE / FEMALE
This episode is much better without annoying Somers around.
redbird28able
I loved Brett
A miracle it wasn't cancelled after season 1, questions are boring and brainless
