    Nate, I understand why you do Background before class, but are you aware that if you gain a skill from one source in character creation you have already acquired in a previous step you can choose any skill on the sheet instead? With that, it can be useful to pick class first so you "force" the process to allow you a free pick. It can be a good way to ensure you gain a particular skill. Perception is an example, as is the more unusual Investigation, that rarely turns up in class or Background choices.
    As an aside, I fear for your Monk in actual combat, with an unarmoured AC of 13!

      Solid advice, thanks Vaughan. Now that you've said it I do remember seeing that rule before, but I guess I just always want to stick with the background and class skills. That's just me. I'm weird.
      Also - yeah, little Sander would definitely have benefited from some higher rolls to bring up that AC. Just one nice high number for Dex would have been awesome. :) Oh well.

    • @AlienoidGamer
      @AlienoidGamer 7 років тому

      I think you read the rule wrong, its only if you can't pick other options does this come into effect

    • @VaughanCockell
      @VaughanCockell 7 років тому

      Alienoid Gamer What I'm doing, as I understand it, is to follow the strict public order to character creation. This runs 1) race, 2) class, including skill proficiencies, 3) ability scores, then 4) personalise, including background. By that order, class skills are already chosen once you move on to background, so repeats at that point trigger free choice.
      It may be worth asking Sage Advice on this, if it still available.

    • @AlienoidGamer
      @AlienoidGamer 7 років тому

      To me that is stretching the limit there, thats specifially making a character with that in mind giving you and edge in skills over other characters, I would deny yout his if you were in my game

    • @VaughanCockell
      @VaughanCockell 7 років тому +2

      Alienoid Gamer Fair enough. it would b interesting to get an official ruling on it as you're not gaining any more skills, just personalising a bit more in a comparable way to custom backgrounds, as I see it.

    Between this video and the one where you create the Drow Rogue, I am convinced: YOU, at least, should ALWAYS use either the standard ability scores or the point buy system. You must be the unluckiest die roller I've ever seen. ;)

    I made monk character and rolled 10 ,10, 8 ,16,18,17. I choose aarakocra race and ended with..
    Str 10
    Dex 16 +2= 18(+4)
    Con 18 (+4)
    Int 10
    Wis 17 +1 = 18(+4)
    Cha 8 (-1)
    .....AC= 10+dex+Wis 18
    It was an awesome start.

    I have a d&d 5e question. How does attacking a creature that is higher than you with melee? like if it's flying, atop a rock, in a tree or up in elevation. This creature may be only five ft. higher still in attack radius but is higher up.

    I am new to D&D. I watched your videos to help me build my character. Which is a Half-Elf Sorcerer with Wild Magic and I want him to try and harness the power of the cold because he was caught in a Blizzard trying to find his purpose in life. When I looked at 5E homebrew they had a couple of spells that are not in the Players Handbook like "Ice Knife, Snilloc's snowball swarm and a few others". Would I need to get the DM's guide to find out about these?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 років тому

      Google those spells. I found them pretty quickly with a "5e ___________ (spell name)" search. Just make sure you have your DMs permission when using things outside the core rules. :)

    • @jakobuhren7493
      @jakobuhren7493 7 років тому +1

      These, as far as I know, are not listed in the DM's guide. I would say if you don't know what they are then first look up the spell online and see if you can find something on it, if you can't then talk to your DM and you could come up with stats for the spells.

    In my current campaign, on of my players really wants an invisibility cloak. He is level 8 and has been researching it for a while. How should I deal with this?

    • @BA5GH3TT1
      @BA5GH3TT1 7 років тому

      William Pfeiffer Honestly at lvl 8 most casters can already cast invisibility. If his character has been looking for one have an npc give him a side quest to go get one

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 років тому

      You add the relevant modifier to damage. In these cases it's my dexterity modifier (+2).

    • @shadowfire9965
      @shadowfire9965 7 років тому

      WASD20 I thought that was just to the attack roll not dmg excuse my noob question I'm making my first character as we speak this video was a huge help

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 років тому

      No problem! The attack bonus is proficiency bonus and relevant modifier added together, while the damage is only the relevant modifier. The proficiency bonus is always +2 until you get to fifth level.

    What is, in your opinion, the best path for a monk? I've always done way of the open hand but the others sound awesome

    • @VaughanCockell
      @VaughanCockell 7 років тому

      If you're asking strictly mechanically, I believe the general view is Way of the Open Hand. However, the Way of the Shadow (I think it's called) is also strong. As ever, though, flavour and setting integration are important so if another fits the concept better, go for that. The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide has 2 more, and I like the Sun Soul one which grants monks a ranged attack using the unarmed combat damage, as blasts of light, and through ki points, radiant based Burning Hands and, eventually a Radiant Fireball.

  • @MrRickles2pointO
    @MrRickles2pointO 7 років тому

    I hope you still check these, because I'm brand new to D&D and I'm confused about where the +2 is coming from in your damage. I'm assuming it's your Dex modifier since you can use Dex instead of Str for attack/damage rolls, yes?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  7 років тому +2

      You are correct. The damage gets the dex modifier and the attack bonus gets the dex modifier and proficiency bonus.

    When you was calculating the damage for the quarterstaff you wrote 1d6 (8) +2 / B.
    What is the +2 for I can't seem to work it out

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  5 років тому +1

      For each weapon there is a relevant modifier that is used to add to damage (and attack). It is usually going to be strength or dexterity. For a monk weapon, I can use dexterity and +2 is my dexterity bonus.
      The six and eight refer to which die I would use. If wielding with one hand, I would use 1D6. If two hands 1D8.

    Wrong way around, mate...

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 років тому

      The inspiration for Gary Gygax including Halflings in D&D was from Tolkien. In fact, in the original D&D they were actually called Hobbits. Then they got sued. :)

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 років тому

      The Hobbit - published in 1937
      Dungeons & Dragons - published in 1974.

    • @roibenblitz6863
      @roibenblitz6863 6 років тому

      In the Hobbit, and the subsequent Tolkien books - he refereed to the Hobbits _as_ Halflings.
      But if this is not true for the Hobbit, I will accept that memory has failed me.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 років тому

      You are correct in saying that Hobbits in the Hobbit and LotR are sometimes called halflings. More in a derogatory way, in general. However, my point in the video was that the concept of Halflings for D&D was taken from Tolkien's work, as clearly evidenced by the fact that they were originally called Hobbits, which is a term specific to Tolkien's work. Halfling as a term actually pre-dates both Gygax and Tolkien, and as it was a more general term, was something TSR could change the name too without risking legal issues.
      There were several other things TSR had to change as well. D&D originally had Ents, Balrog, and I even heard one book had stats for Suaron (not sure if that's true)! The first two were changed to Treants and Balor, respectively.

      The rules for monks in D&D aren't really supposed to be religious types. That's more for Clerics or Paladins in general. A monk COULD be aligned with a certain diety. But more often they are parts of mystic orders centered around certain values and harness the energy known as Ki that flows all around us. A bit like the Jedi in some ways.

      Create a group of Monks that are super powerful and have them find your player(s) and tell them to stop or else. If they attack the monks then have the monks beat up the players a little, not kill them but show them who's boss. Maybe you have a group of 3 or 5 monks, with all 5 classes (or 3 if you don't have the sword coast adventurer's guide), that way you can also show them just how powerful the monks and their subclasses can be.
