I've had that gauge for over a year now. Used it a lot at first but once I noticed that my primer pocket uniformer was doing the trick I just seat until the primers stops. Will help anyone looking for primer pocket depth or seeing how deep their seating there primers into the pocket. Great video brother, Echo.
No doubt about it the tool is very interesting and I am sure that it gives you accurate measurements. The real question is will improved primer pocket conditions create better accuracy. That needs to be tested with a statistically significant number of rounds.
I am going to start down this road and see what there is to find. Might mean nothing, but I guess I will know. Being able to know I was not inducing any error was the first step and that is why I picked this up.
@@BoltActionReloading Any follow up video on this now that you’ve had it the past year? Would be interested to see what the on paper results are over a couple different cartridges with SRP & LRP’s.
You should talk about the settings of the FFA primer seater. For example, how many clicks do you use from the highest level. Also, any experiments with primer seating. Thanks for the videos
This tool measures from the headstamp to the flash hole (bottom of the primer pocket) When seating primers, you're seating from the rim of the case. My understanding is that the case butt (headstamp) to bottom of the primer pocket measurements are not as accurate as measuring from the case rim. When Unifying primer pockets, it's being done to the butt of the case. Possibly introducing variation in flash hole to powder distance. With good quality cases (lapua, alpha) you're doing more damage than good by unfying pockets.
I have been looking for one of these to go with my CPS priming tool... Looks very nice.. Only question I have is how consistent are the actual primers as far as thickness.. This will ultimately decide whether these tools will actually be correct..
Hi Dennis, I really don't have internal neck turning equipment so this would be a more difficult topic for me to cover. I am not sure that if your using mandrels to set your internal neck diameter and outside neck turning it is doing to be a huge difference. BAR
I don’t know if it’s you or F Class John that lead me to just one more tool! Your review of the Frankfort Arsenal hand priming tool convinced me to buy it and now after this video and having seen F Class John’s video on it I’m going to order one! I’m in hopes that it will help with the Adjustment of the Frankfort priming tool as you suggested in this video. Have you done that yet? Any tips or suggestions if you have? The only thing that I haven’t bought yet is the coaxial press!
Since my last post I received the primer seating depth gauge. I seated 30 twice fired 6.5 CM Lapua small primer pockets with CCI BR4’s. I used my RCBS bench top seating tool to seat all the primers. Using the primer seating depth tool I measured all 30 cases. I then took the case that had the deepest set primer and reseated the other primed cases to match it using the Frankfort Arsenal hand tool by using the seating depth adjustment to match the depth of the lowest depth. It did take a while to get the perfect match but after that all cases were finished with the Frankfort hand priming tool and each case was rechecked with the Primer Seating Gauge. I probably should have measured the depth of the primer pockets but the cases were already primed and I didn’t want to redo different cases. Now I took those 30 rounds and fired them over chronograph and I didn’t see any difference in the accuracy or the velocity fps, es, or sd. With this all said I will be trying again because I have heard that 8-9k primer crush is optimal. And that will require measuring primers. pocket depth to get the correct crush. Hope you find this comment interesting or useful.
I may some day. If I thought I would see a miraculous difference I would think more about it. Might be one of those if you never had it you didn't miss it.
This is something that reloader's and shooters of my age can only chuckle and shack our heads at. All you need to do is seat the primer into the bottom of the primer pocket and it will "compress the anvil" by the manufactures' intended design. Dude, this stuff ain't going to the Moon; stop over thinking matters out of your control.
Uniform you pockets and be done with it ,most old reloaders have a good set of depth mic's your not building a space ship and most reloaders are not or can a ford the high road that F Class John travels And get a good press for setting your primers not a set up that is a over gowned set of piers! Just my option most of us old bastere's have been down that road 45 years ago but what do we know ? Charlie.
I didn't say this tool was for everyone, Not sure I need it, but I wanted to be able to measure and control my primer process. This was part of that equation. I hope to learn something so everyone can benefit. If I started using this tool in videos I would get 100 questions about what tool it was and how it worked. I wanted a video to be able to explain it.
@@BoltActionReloading No need to defend yourself. Some people are just narcissist and believe there way is the only way. You know that there is another attachment for this that you can use for bullet seating depth also. Had one since they came out and it is a VERY important and accurate tool for serious reloads. Way to go.

@@BoltActionReloading I don't mind spending tons of time on brass prep but in the end I want to see that it accomplished something.
I completely agree. I am going to spend the time and see what my process will loose / gain with paying more attention to primer seating, etc.

Oh thanks, now I know that this is yet another thing that I need or else my handloads will suck.
Not saying that. The factory control on primer depth is relatively poor. I just want to see how good I can get them.
Great little tool
Good video very interesting tool. Hope you show it in use in future videos. Thanks
Thank you. I have some primer testing that I want to do and I wanted a tool to make sure my seating depth was consistent.
Have you considered doing a show on internal neck turning compared to outside neck turning consistent bullet release

Was wondering were you would have a smoother surface if you might get a more consistent release?

Coming from who, you? Who are you exactly?
I found that my Accuracy 1 primer pocket gauge will not accurately measure the pocket of Lapua 6.5 PRC brass
