    Charlie never ceases to amaze me, how the hell can he play bass and melody at the same time??? I know pianista do that but it’s different on guitar. On piano left hand is bass and right is melody. On guitar the left hand has to fret both bass and melody and the right hand has to pick bass and melody both. AMAZING!!!

      He was playing with melodic and rhythmic independence prowess for decades. Was on the bill with Charlie Hunter Trio at Bimbo’s 365 back in 1994 and was told during that show that he had been playing for only six years…Six YEARS?!? His playing ability was just as incredible then. He’s a one of a kind. Scary good.

      This song is an Astor Piazzolla song called "Libertango". GAT swamba is a different song.

      Yes it has a similar melody to Libertango but is in fact GAT swamba. Different root movement distinguishes the two.

    Lordy! Only thing missing is D’Angelo in his black tank top on his Fender Rhodes. This was brilliant. I only learned who Charlie Hunter was today even though I been hearing him for 20+ years.

    • @leonardogzm
      @leonardogzm 6 років тому

      yeah but guitarist don't.. and for a good reason: u need 2 fucking brains to achieve this kind of improvisational independence and freedom while having a steady groove, he is using his both hands sure, but the notes come from just the fretboard hand.. it would be like comping and improvising with EACH hand... (would be a interesting experiment for a pianist to do..)

      Not like this they don't. It's the same concept, but physical execution is harder. And the techniques he uses are esoteric, it's possible he is the only one that possesses them. absolutely inimitable player

    I love Charlie's playing. I thing it's a good thing that he dropped that "organ" sound, not that I didn't like it but he is not the type of musician to stay in one mode for ever. Good on you Charlie. Monster drumming, monster music.
