From the Get go I’ve loved the Stranglers ….one of the best bands to come out of this country ….Hugh was a loss but Baz has more than filled that void …JJ is a true Rock legend ….I hope the Stranglers keep going on ….
I was there in '90, they came on after about 5 hours of support acts and when this started I could feel there was something in the air; of course as it transpired it was their last gig as the original lineup! Fast forward over 30 years and I've enjoyed hearing and seeing both The Stranglers and Hugh solo (and JJ solo!) regularly ever since. The lesson? When it's over it's only just begun... Best track at this gig? Something better change!
This was the end of the first main incarnation of the Stranglers besides Ellis , I saw this tour and it was the last time I saw them over a 13 year period. They were a tired out version of their former selves but still a good show. Now I see the dynamic that made Hugh decide he did not want to continue, real shame.
Excellent live version of 'Toiler On The Sea'. Too bad that Hugh Cornwell decided to quit The Stranglers that year in 1990. But he had his reasons. He just felt The Stranglers couldn't go any further creative wise with the music. He called Jet Black on the phone that he was quitting. Jet Black's response was "OK". and that was it. Dave Greenfield was one of the best keyboard and synth musicians in the world of rock. He did look much better with a mustache. May he Rest In Peace.
Great live performance of a great song! I love that people are uploading all these live performances from over the years... I never had any real interest in seeing the Stranglers live, just listened to their albums and enjoyed their music. I wish I had seen them and hope I get a chance to see them in the future. Definitely on my list as a must see band now. And yes, tour the USA! Big thanks to everyone who shares these gems on UA-cam!
I saw The Stranglers in concert in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California on the Central West Coast around 1983 or in 1984 at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. They opened up for Roxy Music. Fantastic performances by both bands.
Seeing a lot of comments about this this being lacklustre. I know it was the very end of Mk1 but I love this version because of it's dynamics and more relaxed feel.
Great sound and performance, despite Hugh's situation but the stage lighting sucked for a video. It's good they are sounding great again. Wish they'd tour the USA.
After Rattus it took me a long time to get to grips (no pun intended) with B&W but this and Tank are among my fav songs. but hugh doesnt do it justice here, looks like he cant wait to leave, which is likely true
damn i wish hugh would come back to he stranglers. to think i was 4 back in 1990 who knew hugh would leave the next day.. best band ever. screw all those other overrated bands.
Not a patch on their Black and White tour. Baz has rejuvenated the band I am sorry to say. The band look miserable on here. I saw them in Bristol last week and they looked so much livelier. They were really having a good time compared to this. They did Toiler also. Quite a contrast x
I was at that gig, Town and Country Club birthday gigs ?? I'd forgotten the additional guitarist, wasn't there a brass section brought on as well ? Thanks for the video, first time I've seen anything from this gig.
seen em many times...alway's at least very good... but alas.. never seen them other than the original four members.... i think the chemistry between them was something unique in sound, thho' i have listened to the strang's with baz, some great stuff, especially time to die..... dint like the girly singer before, did he get sacked?
As an 'old punk' I loved John Ellis for his work with 'The Vibrators' first two LP's, why did The Stranglers need to add a 'touring guitarist' to the line up? It was The beginning of the end for me! Yes, there were a lot of overlays, on the later records as the band got more adventurous! But they had such an amazing keyboard player , and a 'LOOP PEDAL' could have done the rest! Ironically, Hugh Cornwell uses this now in his live sets! Bad move getting John Ellis in, and the next incarnation with Paul Robertson was just awful! Sorry but that is my opinion! dx
You're not alone thinking that way. I suppose the so called fans who never saw them in their earlier years would disagree. In the early days they WERE the best, absolutely no doubt about it. I remember seeing them at the beginning, I remember that moment even now. Totally blown away!
@@rayenbow3281 I saw The Stranglers around mid 80's in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. They opened up for Roxy Music, which I thought it was a bit odd. I think I was the only one who knew who The Stranglers were from the rest of the audience which they seemed not too interested in them. I kept shouting a few times "Peaches and singing some of the lyrics, but for some reason they did not play any of their earlier songs. Hugh did respond to me and said "Ah. Someone remembers." It was a fantastic concert both by The Stranglers and Roxy Music.
Hugh had just completely lost it. So lacklustre in this performance which made the rest of the band look miserable. So much more fun to watch the Stranglers now. They seem a lot livelier with Baz. Looking foreword to seeing them on their 40th anniversary x
Bisous à vous
The Stranglers are in the top 5 greatest British bands of all time...
Cancelled these days though.

Nah.
Way ahead of their time, the stranglers are just one of those bands that you will always have a place in your heart for
They should have been the best band in the world along with the damned and the banshees ignored for shitty bands with no talent
the hair and denim mob go on about the stones smack heads about oasis but pound for pound THE best band to come out of this country
I think the Stranglers and Dr Feelgood were the two best bands to come out of the UK
I couldn't agree more. This band helped me negotiate puberty and adulthood. My heroes.
True!
What a superb band. Loved by those who know, but sadly unknown to those who forever live in darkness!
Dave Greenfield absolute gentleman and solid member of The Stranglers with keyboard skills all of his own for many decades of musicianship exemplified
Farewell Dave I will listen to the stranglers forever more so long legend
Everybody Loves you when you are Dead"
R I P Dave Greenfield. The end of an era.
Sad day.

Indeed. Hugh bolting in 90 was one this ,but this 😥
Sadly, missed, but his music, like Mozart's, is forever.
Epic song. From the Black and white - album. Still sounds avant-garde after all these years!

That extra guitar adds to the effect. Slick and tight, contained power and menaing and avant avant-garde. Holds up well.
Deadly Bass 🔊 Monster Keyboards, Fabulous lead & Rhythm guitar. Black And White an all time Masterpiece.
This is a brilliant version of Toiler on the Sea !
Brilliant!
Wow, that is incredible. Sound quality is amazing too.
Was at the gig
Brilliant song.
Superb band. My favourite album
Saw the early NYC shows including Bonds, great shows.
Was at this; blimey, 1990. Lucky you. Bonds legendary....
Excellent version
One of their best.
Top tune. Class stuff top band!!!
Fantastic great song . From when the Stranglers were great

Top notch sound,picture and performance.Great song,love it.
Sometimes I don't know in which planet I've been living. I love them and should be listening much more.
That brought me to tears
I was at this gig.
We'd no idea that Hugh was going to quit the day after.

Hugh choking back the emotion during the first few lines. He knew this was going to be the end of an era.
Nice one mate xcellent vid
Managed a band in the early eighties . Did back up to the Stranglers for a gig for the Feline tour . Like this material better
Nice to see Ellis in this perfect lineup performance
Perfect? It was shit. The Stranglers were 4 people
SUBLIME,GIG!!

I was meant to go to this gig, but dint for some silly reason. Kind of glad I didn't now. Not sure why.....
best intro ever x
The Stranglers will be back in 2023 ! 26 gigs ! Ang Hugh Cornwell is in tour also (he will be in Nottingham the 5th of December).
Remember when they came on in 70s and early 80s and we fucked the seats up in Edinburgh and glasgow
When someone's made their mind up they're leaving. Sad night.
Hugh is Hugh

A very lackluster performance compared to years before. I'm very glad I saw them so many times from 1978 to 1983 when they were at their peak.
i was at this gig , it was a blinder and unknown at the time hugh's last one with the boys, i got laid too after !
I d even go and watch Howard Jones if I knew I was going to get laid after.

best was when the stranglers opened bradys in liverpool 1979 best gig i ever went to.
Beautiful version, but I prefer the faster one from the album...

just gives me the impression HC is going through the motions and looks like he can't be arsed being there.
Waiting for his next shot
Another day at the office
No it's not-it's really flat-he probably told them he was going to leave-Birmingham in the 80s-another planet
A tad slow in my opinion.
Classe éternelle
I'd stopped going by then
Rest in Peace Charlie Devreaux.
Looking for myself in the audience at 3 mins 50... I don’t remember it being so dark. Must have been aiming for a moody start to the gig.
what is this....its been edited....they've cut some of this out.
I was there that night.
I was this gig. The sound was dreadful and it had all gone a bit AOR by then.

I think this is a concert that A how the Flock of Seagulls got their name from cuz they were in the middle of the crowd
Considering a flock of seagulls formed in 1979 I very much doubt it…. 😂
The end game.
Not bad but the album version way faster read the from which hugh got the inspiration heavy but great
terrible concert - last gig before Hugh called it a day. What an earth was John Ellis doing there :-(
this is the kind of stuff that makes me feel like i was born into the wrong era.
Sounds very tame
Is Hugh crying during the first verse ?
seems to indeed, didn't notice that
and also he hadn't to scream at times, as usual
I thought that too the very 1st time I saw this all those yrs ago. You are the 1st person I have ever noticed comment on this since. I think he is

Did the band know this was the last gig with Hugh? Or did he just announce he was leaving the next day?
The band didn't know.
Hugh Cornwell could have stood in for John Wayne, a mans man
Lackluster because they were obviously in a terrible mood due to it being Hugh's last gig. Him leaving wasn't spontaneous?
