I enjoyed this. Some folks are knowledgeable but simply can not teach. You, my friend, are a knowledgeable teacher with humility....
Thank you!
I'm glad you messed up and redid it because we can all learn from corrected mistakes when it's your first time making something for yourself. I want to make one for myself.
I got into about five different craft hobbies when the pandemic started to keep me busy. Bushcraft and survival, woodcraft and knife making.
I am a new guy in leathercraft. I watch lots of people in this craft to see what I want to make.
I am learning too. And loving it.
Really cool project!
thank you!
I designed my own haversack and it’s served me well. Er, well, it showed me what I wish I’d done. 😜 Mine is partially laced and partially stitched. It’s a bit wider than yours (I think) but similar. My next one will be a bit bigger, with side pockets (folding knife on one side, fire striker and diamond stone on other). I’m going to cruise you’re videos for the follow up. Cover me! I’m going in!!
VERY COOL!!! there’s something so satisfying about making your own gear. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I love it. Good luck on your next build. I’ll be looking out for you.
@@PrimalEdge likewise! I agree it's very satisfying. and I find leather is versatile and forgiving material to work with. great for learning. :-)
Great video!!! Love the way you described the leather and patina it will gain. “Scratches” (in my mind) on the final product bring about a story to it.
Thank you for sharing!
Exactly! Thank you!!
@@PrimalEdge ,This bag has just been scratching at my mind ever since I watched the video (I should be mad at you for that😝). Can you provide the measurements for it? I would love to use it as a base starting point.
Yes, when I get back to the house I’ll measure it
@@PrimalEdge no worries! Got one made 14 x 12. 😎
I realize i am 3 years late to the party but as a new leather worker myself I appreciate this video. It is good to see the learning process, I am curious what the demensions of the haversack are and if you ever finished it? If so, how did it turn out?
Nice project video. Learning from our mistakes is a great way to learn. I’ve done a few of these and my first one had the same issues as you did and a few more because I was an idiot! What was the panel sides?
I have to see if I could find the type of leather that I use for that. Surprisingly I believe I bought it at Tandy. Either that or weaver leather. As soon as I find out, I’ll post it here. And thanks for your comment! If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying to learn.
With a buckle closure on front and rounded flap edges it would look mighty fine.
If you can believe it, I still haven’t finished the front because I’m so wishy-washy about how I want to do it. Although I like your idea, kind of a scalloped front with a buckle closure, that could look sharp.
@@PrimalEdge I was thinking of rounded edges on bottom left and right side but whatever you choose just do it. You can always make more and they’ll only get better.
I am going to make one of those using a canvas bag with a little leather sewn on. I'm going to try to waxing it first then attaching some leather.
Thanks for tuning in this week folks, I really appreciate it. Let me know what your thoughts are on how this thing turned out. Be well!

Really enjoyed, subscribed!
Thank you! Welcome to the community!
This would make a greate possibles/black powder shooting bag once you get both the inside and loop outside pockets on and in. I would love to see it when it is finished.
That’s a great idea I like it! I’ll post some pictures to my channel sometime this weekend. Thanks for the comet hope you’re doing well
For the next bG.. maybe you could try sewing it inside out and then just flip it..
Great vid! Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks. I wonder if a guy can use a type of pin to help hold material in place like when riveting sheetmetal?
I like it, good job
thank you!
A tip for your issue with the slipping stitches. It's something I came up with on my own, but it's very handy....
About every 10 or so stitches, do a half knot before you put the second needle through (I do my needles one at a time. It's faster than trying to finagle both needles through the hole, it doesn't wallow out the holes, and for me it's just plain faster). Doing it before you pull the second needle through will pull the half knot into the hole, hiding the crossover. It'll create enough tension in there to keep the thread from backing out as you're working with it.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
Also worth mentioning: Try harness needles. Must nicer, less breakage, etc.
I've also used a single stitch to hold pieces together where a clamp wouldn't work well (just a quick little unfinished stitched to hold the lines).
That sounds like a great tip!!! I’ll try it, for sure!
Now THIS is what the comment section is for! I appreciate you sharing!!!
@@PrimalEdge You're most welcome. Feel free to pop over to the leatherworking subreddits or over on FB (leather work patterns) if you aren't already a member. There are a lot of us out there to help.
To be fair, measure twice cut once is usually meant for wood so you don't make it too short. Your problem was actually the opposite which is what I do. Ere in the side of caution when it can ruin a project by being too small
Thanks for sharing the tips! That’s what this community is all about. I appreciate you watching, and the comment.
want! 👍✌🖖
Jones uses a British gas mask bag
true, but I was actually doing a nod to the movie "The Hangover"
The Mark VII bag can still be considered a haversack, as the term has come to simply mean a side bag on a single strap worn over the shoulder. Yes, Indiana Jones had a gas mask bag. But what did he use it for? He used it as a haversack.
I haven’t found where you explained details about the leather being used. What is it called and what is the weight?
