When I think of Canada in the 1980s, this song (and especially the manner in which the guitar is being played/the chorus effect added to its sound) is exactly what comes to mind. SO MANY memories when this one comes on. 💖
Love, love, love this song. It’s the perfect amalgamation of music, video, and prose. I would rewind this video on VHS countless times just to watch it again. When I wasn’t watching it I would be walking around my parent’s house singing, “Say, say to me”. I kind of forgot this song as I got into my teenage years, but not completely. Every so often I would have to play the track. I’m thankful for UA-cam and the opportunity to see this video again for the first time in perhaps thirty (30) years. It makes the song all the much better. Great song, great video, great memories of a time when I viewed the world innocently.
My first car. A rare sight in Canada... not alone in Ontario. 1989. The guy who gave me my license test asked me what it was? I promptly told him, it's a Renault 5 Sport as if he should know. Never seen one before was his response. He failed me. I went back a month later and got my license in that very car. A four speed that noboby knew existed outside of Europe, French Canada and maybe Africa. True Story. Mine was all black with mirror tint side glass and a full roll back soft top. How I miss that car.
this has got the be one of THE BEST music videos ever created....the song , the acting depicting the story to the lyrics, its just a true musical concept that is just gold!
A Quebecois group singing/speaking in English along with English subtitles because the song's set in France: bilingualism all around. I remember this song well from the late eighties.
Also the french dialogue is said with a french accent not a french canadian one... even without the video it's evident that the story happened in France.
I discovered this song when I was in my early 20s. I bought the song on 45 rpm. Still have the record somewhere! It has a detached haunting quality that rises out of the morbid spoken lyrics, harmonies, and excellent background vocals. The band sounds really tight too.
I completely forgot about this song until i just read a BlogTO post that talked about concerts this summer and The Box was one and I was like DAMN. And immediately came looking for this song. I couldn’t remember the name of it. Just that I loved it and haven’t heard it in at least 25 years.

My parents too me to see Chris Deburg in the early 80s. The Box opened with A Sound that shook my little body from the ground to my eyes, never recovered. To this day when I hear Closer Together I can Feel it, guess we were too close to the speakers. But I did love this song,
Cool! I saw The Box as the opening act for Chris de Burgh as well-- in Edmonton, 1987 (?) "The Lady In Red" was a big hit by then. I don't remember exactly what The Box played during their set, but they must have included "L' Affaire Dumoutier" seeing as I believe it's their biggest hit. I also seem to recall Sass Jordan possibly touring with them at the time.
Saw Chris De Burgh In Winnipeg for his Into The Light tour and they opened. I wasn't a big fan of theirs but I sure was after. I loved them live. Oh and Sass Jordan. :) It was an amazing night all around.
I loved this clip so much when I was a kid. I had taped it on VHS but my mother asked my big brother to erase it because she thought it was morbid and that I was watching it way too often 😄

The morbid spoken bits and eerie tone of this song freaked me out after hearing it on the radio; stayed in my mind for a while, and I actually had no idea what the name of the song was or anything else but a few lyrics (like the "Tightrope of insanity" part) it took me a while to find it and I was very interested to find it wasn't another case of a lost song, but rather an obscure effort from the underappreciated world of musical Canada.

This song is an absolute masterpiece. Not even French Canadian. Not even born in the 80s. Just a youth that grew up with older music and loves it!
Absolutely, it really is. I remember hearing this on CFNY now and then back in the day. The Box were very talented.

So true 😒

Martin Streek, CFNY, Rest in Eternal Peace Sir. It was you who exposed me to great music like this.
If not for the Canadian Content law, and Toronto's CFNY (the spirit of radio), I probably would have never heard this great song.
so true. and look whats replaced cfny now. down hill ever since.

Got a lot of play on CHOM too.

This song just flashed me back 35 years ago growing up in Montreal. Nothing transports you back in time like great music.

This is just brilliance and this Newfie kid who grew up in a very small town, loved this song from the first time I heard as a teenager in the 80s.
